The basis for this correlation is what Simon refers to as the “ultimate resource,” namely the human mind and the collective stock of dispersed, tacit, and inarticulate knowledge among individuals. Though not incorrect, this simple rendition of his argument does not do full justice to the inspiration that Simon took from the mainline of economic thought. The purpose of this paper is to situate Julian Simon’s The Ultimate Resource as part of the mainline of development economics. I do so by developing an implicit and underappreciated relationship between entrepreneurship and economic growth in Simon’s The Ultimate Resource . I argue that this correlation between economic growth and population growth is predicated on what Simon refers to as “economies of scope.” This implies twofold. First, that a Smithian division of labor and a Hayekian division of knowledge emerge simultaneously, but are inherently predicated on a Misesian division of private property rights. Secondly, population growth is a proximate cause of economic growth, and therefore a by-product of a more fundamental institutional foundation: an ever-increasing scope in the ability of individuals to exchange ideas, goods, and services.","PeriodicalId":45264,"journal":{"name":"Review of Austrian Economics","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.7,"publicationDate":"2022-01-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44637048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It affects 15% of patients presenting to emergency care and up to half of hospitalized patients. The emergency department (ED) often represents the entry point for hospital care for older adults and as such is an important site for delirium prevention.</p><p><strong>Objective: </strong>We sought to characterize delirium prevention initiatives in EDs in the United States and Canada.</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>We conducted qualitative interviews with 16 ED administrators representing 14 EDs with delirium prevention initiatives. We used a combined deductive-inductive approach to code responses about involved staff, target patient population, and delirium prevention activities.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>ED delirium prevention initiatives were largely driven by bedside nurses and occurred on an ad hoc basis, rather than systematically. Due to resource limitations, three EDs targeted older adults with high-risk conditions for delirium, rather than all patients age 65 and over. The most common delirium prevention interventions were offering assistive sensory devices (hearing amplifiers, reading glasses), having a toileting protocol, and offering patients food and drink.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>As minimal evidence exists about effective ED delirium prevention practices, low-cost and low-risk activities outlined by study participants are reasonable to use to improve patient experience and staff satisfaction.</p>","PeriodicalId":45264,"journal":{"name":"Review of Austrian Economics","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11259403/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74378561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
