Muench, Gerald Wildenberg","doi":"10.2307/3027284","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3027284","url":null,"abstract":"calculation yields 0.3010294. Computer simulations of this process indicate that our algorithm almost always underestimates the desired logarithm. The process appears to be accurate to about two decimal places fewer than the calculator will display. This error is due to the accumulation of round-off errors from the repeated divisions as well as the errors in our decimal approximations for the roots of ten. We can also construct a related algorithm to find antilogarithms. Actually, antiloglo(x) is lOx so we use the decimal digits of x as counters for our roots of ten in order to construct lOX by repeated multiplication. This method of calculating logarithms is not new; F. E. Hohn was aware of it in 1943 [2]. At that time he was correct in asserting that the method was not practical for pencil and paper computation; however, our pocket calculators have changed the situation. Now almost everyone has at least a simple four-function calculator, and many people are able to enjoy experimenting and playing with numbers. As noted at the beginning of the article, Hewlett-Packard calculators use a method similar to ours to calculate their logarithms. However, the H.P. algorithm is oriented toward machines while our method is oriented toward human beings. The differences are quite striking, as you will find by reading Egbert's article.","PeriodicalId":448750,"journal":{"name":"Two-Year College Mathematics Journal","volume":"219 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123298928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We might ask, for example, how a calculator can find the logarithm of a given number. The Hewlett-Packard Company uses an ingenious technique to allow its calculators to find logarithms [1]. This technique has a number of intricate, clever tricks which make the method ideal for a calculator, but bewildering for humans. We shall study a related method, which is easy for humans but not so nice for a calculator. Our technique, however, has the added benefit that it can help us to see the logarithm in a new light. For example, log 2 0.30103 and so","PeriodicalId":448750,"journal":{"name":"Two-Year College Mathematics Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128517582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Brunson","doi":"10.2307/3027282","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/3027282","url":null,"abstract":"In recent years much attention has been given to the inadequate mathematics training of women and their anxiety toward mathematics. Experimental efforts to rectify this situation have used various approaches. Included in these attempts is the still slightly controversial innovation of all-female mathematics classes. Disagreement over the implications of single-sex mathematics classes has motivated continued research in this area. In 1978, Carolyn MacDonald published an article in this journal which dealt with an experimental precalculus all-female mathematics class. Differences in format for the all-female section made it impossible to isolate the effect of having only women in the class. This unanswered question was the primary basis for the experiment discussed in this article. Specifically, the objective of the experiment was to compare the achievement of women in an all-female section of M014, a basic mathematics course, with the achievement of women in mixed-sex classes. Basic Algebra (MO14) is a noncredit algebra course taught to approximately 1000 students each year at Indiana University, Bloomington. Students arriving at IU with a weak math background take M014 to provide them with the mathematical skills needed in college level mathematics courses such as finite mathematics and a survey of calculus. M014 is taught entirely by graduate students who are assisted by undergraduate interns. Classes are lecture-lab oriented with a stress on individualization. To assist in the individual treatment of students, two instructors and one undergraduate intern are assigned to each section, which consists of about 30-50 students. M014 is graded on a pass-fail basis and there are several chances to retake each of the four major tests. The women in this study were all undergraduate women enrolled in six sections of M014 during the spring semester of 1980. The female-only section consisted of 25","PeriodicalId":448750,"journal":{"name":"Two-Year College Mathematics Journal","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123647517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
