The modulation- and phase-shift have been illustrated and the influence of the different modulation and frequency indices have been studied. Furthermore, the torque, and rotor eddy currents and core losses are calculated using FEA when either modulation-shifted or phase-shifted current waveforms are generated and fed to the machine. It is found that using modulation-shift can reduce the current harmonic substantially however the inverter requires two sets of input signals. On the other hand, although the current harmonic reduction is less than that of the modulation-shift, the phase-shift layout can be employed using one set of input signals with a signal delay.","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134358197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to increase the system efficiency a dual technology converter is used, with one inverter composed of standard IGBT devices and the other composed of fast switching Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices. The common dc link OEW configuration allows the zero-sequence current (ZSC) to flow freely, and the low time constants of the zero-circuit can lead to high zero sequence current flow, with associated losses and stress on the power devices. To avoid this, the zero-sequence voltage produced by the switching combinations adopted to synthetize the control signals needs to be instantaneously eliminated. A novel modulation for dual converter configurations is proposed to eliminate the zero-sequence voltage(ZSV).","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115510483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For novel prototype machines, hardware testing processes are an important part of quantifying these parameters. For some machines, effective characterization may be accomplished using a series of static and simple prime-mover tests. The resulting data permits calibration of loss- and thermal-models. These can then be used to predict on-load performance. Fault-tolerant machines based on single layer winding arrangements are designed to minimize interaction between windings or module-groups. This paper demonstrates that, for such a machine, the losses measured during simple DC and primer-mover tests may be used to infer performance during both ‘healthy’ and ‘faulted’ operating modes. Under faulted conditions the total machine loss is expected to be a combination of module-specific and common losses, which can be directly deduced from hardware tests. This paper discusses the accuracy of loss superposition when applied to a 180 kW multi-channel, fault-tolerant aerospace machine. From observations following faulted and healthy dynamometry tests, there exists close correlation between full-load performance and estimates made from the superposition of losses under discrete operating modes.","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"167 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133904662","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study is conducted over a wide frequency range (10–100 kHz), which is a novelty. The corresponding winding losses are succesfully identified for this purpose. The impact of temperature is also studied. The results show that that iron losses compose a significant share of the total losses beyond 50 kHz. Stator harmonic iron losses at 100 kHz can be decreased with 30% by using NO10 instead of NO30.","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129042178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The heat transfer from the winding body is notoriously difficult to predict theoretically due to the multi-material composite structure of the stator-winding assembly. Together with numerous manufacture and assembly factors, the heat transfer is usually informed empirically. Further to this, the stator-winding assembly frequently constitutes the main source of power loss within a machine assembly. Both the heat transfer and power loss effects have a significant impact on the machine's overall power output capability. A common approach when quantifying the heat transfer across the stator-winding is based on an equivalent thermal resistance. This method provides reliable information regarding the capability of the dissipative heat transfer. However, as the thermal resistance data is related to a particular machine and stator-winding assembly, the results are difficult to transfer and compare across different machine designs. Especially if no supplementary stator-winding construction data is available. Here, a method utilizing an equivalent thermal conductance has been proposed to enable data transfer for the alternative machine builds and topologies. This allows for a relatively simple comparison among alternative stator-winding assemblies. Both the experimental and theoretical findings are presented in the paper to illustrate the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129993511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As operating frequencies, harmonic content and efficiency increase, electrical methods of measuring loss become more uncertain since they are affected by phase-errors and electromagnetic interference among other factors. However, calorimeter facilities tend to be costly bespoke measurement systems which is a barrier to their widespread use. In this paper, an extension to the closed double-jacket type calorimeter topology is presented which offers comparatively low-cost, simplified construction and improved flexibility with the aim of promoting a more widespread use of calorimetry within the power electronics community.","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114717160","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All investigated AFPM machine topologies are variations of the internal stator twin external rotor AFPM machine. This paper studies the torque ripple and minimization methods for 12-stator VFRMs. Starting with the analysis of harmonics in the self and mutual inductances of field and armature windings, instantaneous torque equations are derived by virtual work method, which give a clear view on the dominated torque ripple components in VFRMs. Afterwards, the influences of motor topology on harmonics of the inductances as well as the torque ripple are investigated, such as number of rotor poles and tooth arc, etc. On the basis of the aforementioned analysis, harmonic injections in field current and armature current are analyzed for torque ripple reduction. The effectiveness of these two methods is investigated for non-saturated and saturated 12/10 VFRMs based on 2D finite element analysis. The results show good performance of torque ripple minimization by harmonic armature current injection.","PeriodicalId":448669,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE International Electric Machines and Drives Conference (IEMDC)","volume":"5 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120935852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
