It offers a preliminary investigation of Late Bronze Age roots of later ritual practice in the major sanctuaries of the great goddess of western Anatolia and the Aegean Islands. The author argues that the Syrian temple in antis played a significant role in the development of the Greek prostyle temple. Hestiatoria have traditionally been defined as “dining spaces” on the basis of loose architectural distinctions, such as rooms set aside in sanctuaries, sometimes with off-center doorways, indications of klinai or other small finds that suggest dining. Rooms in stoas sometimes served for dining purposes, as is well attested, but the form of the complexes differs substantially. Can there be a more precise typology made of these buildings and the indicators which might suggest different practices? Are there specific differences architecturally between ritual dining and public dining? He describes Hansen’s empathetic working method, which leads to a better understanding of the whole construction process of the temple. An essential part was the building of an evenly ascending slipway on the steep hillside, which could comply with the limits of the tractive force and the load put on the constructed track by the transport of the building blocks and wooden beams. This slipway was used to transport around 2,000 building blocks with a total volume of more than 3,000 m3. Larsson, Anna Berg","doi":"10.1163/16000390-12340006","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1163/16000390-12340006","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000A distinct concentration of 150 gallery graves dating to the Late Neolithic (2400–1700 BC) occurs in Göteryd parish in the South Swedish Uplands. This study investigates why such a concentration of gallery graves exists in this region and why these were not exchanged by new monuments in the Bronze Age. In order to discuss these issues, the distribution of the monuments and the stray finds have been analysed and correlated to the results of local pollen analysis. The results support the impression of abandonment at the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. The processes of expansion and abandonment seem to reflect general population trends, as discussed in recent works on population dynamics. Göteryd parish is a highland region and marginal from an agricultural point of view, but it borders on fertile and plain coastal areas, which are easily accessible through river valleys. In periods of population growth, Göteryd parish would absorb people from the coastal plains, a process that probably was reversed when the population shrank.
