Over the years, MNCs have been considered necessary for achieving socioeconomic development, especially in less developed countries (LDCs). However, some literature argues that the presence of MNCs in LDCs has limited benefits for society. This has been premised on the notion that they have failed to help address social ills, such as unemployment, poverty, and inequality, and have been able to achieve undue influence with the politics of LDCs. This paper employs the stakeholder theory to assess whether MNCs contribute to economic development and foster collaborative relations within their communities. This paper used secondary data (through a literature review) to collect relevant information. It was revealed that host governments have limited associations and, to a great extent, control how MNCs conduct their business. While MNCs have been lauded for foreign direct investment inflow, such inflow has often not translated into tangible development for some countries. Furthermore, in developing regions, the lack of adequate legislation, and widespread inequality, corruption and poverty makes it difficult for the potential benefits of MNCs to be realized. Leveraging the potential benefits of MNCs needs to be supported by the relevant legislation and political will, something lacking in many developing countries.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125392305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It utilized the qualitative method by means of phenomenological inquiry. A total of 21 participants were interviewed, ten for in-depth and eleven for focus group discussions. Use was made of research questions carefully formulated to elicit more responses from the interviewees. Both positive and negative aspects of their experiences were highlighted in this paper's findings. The accessibility to all websites, availability, longer use of the internet, and comfort in using facilities and gadgets emerged as favorable while expensive facility services; noisy, crowded and unsafe environment; unreliability of information; vulnerability of computer units to viruses that could infect flash drives; susceptibility to power interruption; and lack of privacy appeared to be their unfavorable experiences. These results implied the urgency of creating a deeper study on the lived experiences of the students to include the actual conditions of the university on-campus internet facility as a sequel to this investigation.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131353438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 92 secondary students were selected to participate in the study from an intact pilot sample who took the TLE subject. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data in a two-group pre-test post-test quasi-experiment design. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and the Pearson product moment correlation. Findings revealed that the majority of the fourth-year high school students were female, aged between 15 and 16 years old, whose parents had attained a college education and have a moderate family income, and a small family size. Students in both the simulation and convention groups have positive attitudes toward TLE. Moreover, the fathers’ level of education attainment and family size have an impact on the students’ academic performance. Their level of academic performance was proficient based on their knowledge and skills in TLE, especially in cooking lessons. The academic performance of students has significantly improved when using cooking simulation. Students in the simulation group have demonstrated better proficiency and interest in the TLE subject. The findings of the study indicate that a simulation teaching approach has a positive impact on students’ academic performance. Hence, teachers are encouraged to use simulation or actual learning activities in teaching TLE lessons to enhance students’ academic performance and stimulate their educational experience.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114585251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objectives of this research paper are to examine seven sets of newly published English textbooks’ reading and listening sections to learn about their specific features, as well as their difficulty levels. The result demonstrates that in all seven sets of textbooks, the listening sections have far more volume of content than the reading sections. The readability tests indicate that the reading sections contain higher levels of sentences, which contradicts the authors’ initial impression. However, a careful study of the use of past tense verbs and prepositions in each section demonstrates that there are more prepositions in all seven sets of textbooks in the listening sections. The results indicate that past tense verbs and prepositions can be effective benchmarks to measure the readability level of these newly published English textbooks.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129148723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Claims about women in the past have been crucial because of existing feminist ideologies. The interest in gender and empowerment is an issue today as some women poets and women in modern times have been empowered in dealing with men, in particular. Through stylistics, specifically Halliday’s transitivity analysis, an interpretation of women’s consciousness and experiences became accessible. Directing at how contemporary women poets portray their women-personae, this paper investigated these personae through thematic and critical analysis, alongside Halliday’s transitivity analysis of the poems “Fear”, by Sarah Gambito, “Father and I”, by Maningning Miclat, and “Tribeswoman”, by Marra PL. Lanot. The results revealed that the active actors in the poems are women as persona. Out of the identified processes, 12 are categorized as material processes, three processes each for mental, behavioral, and verbalization, and nine are relational processes. Also, it is uncovered that women in the contemporary period are bound by their shared experiences (jouissance); are awakened; demonstrate character strength; fight back against patriarchy’s oppressive dominance; speak their own language; construct their own society; and create their new identity. Using the transitivity framework as a tool for interpreting literary texts can benefit literature readers not only in uncovering the underlying ideologies in literary texts, but also in making literature reading practical and pleasurable (cf Dulce et Utile).","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"74 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134109001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study’s purpose was to explore colour symbolism in traditional healing of the Dagomba. The study fits into cultural anthropology and thus uses observation and interview as data collection instruments, by spending time with a Dagomba traditional healer for one month. The findings were analysed qualitatively and organised thematically, showing that green, red, black and white are the prominent colours used in traditional medicine and healing of the Dagomba people. We recommend further studies of colour symbolism in other cultures of Ghana.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130600022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Just as students need support to continue learning, teachers need support to continue teaching. With teachers engaging in a multitude of tasks and their responsibilities not limited to preparing and discussing lessons alone, they are becoming more prone to experiencing higher levels of psychological distress. This can then impact their work engagement and their ability to function effectively. In consideration of this, this study attempted to assess the psychological distress and work engagement of selected faculty members at the University of Batangas (UB) Main Campus. Specifically, this study measured gender differences in terms of psychological distress and work engagement. In addition, the focus of this study also included determining whether a significant relationship exists between teachers' psychological distress and work engagement through the adapted and self-constructed questionnaire. Results showed that selected teachers from the UB exhibited mild forms of psychological distress but high levels of work engagement. No significant differences in psychological distress and work engagement were found between male and female teachers. A mental health program was also proposed as an output of the study to help combat psychological distress and improve work engagement among teachers.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128822190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This culture has been transformed into feminised unskilled labour termed Kayayei in Ghanaian cities as a fallout from poor education outcomes and its attendant lack of sustainable jobs in the rural areas. Kayayei is used in Ghana to refer to young female migrants between the ages of 8-35 years from the poverty endemic areas of northern Ghana engaging in head porterage business in the cities as a means of survival. The increasing incidence of kayaye and its attendant social, health and economic problems have attracted media and research commentary in Ghana in recent times. This study investigates contraceptive use among kayayei in the Kumasi metropolis of Ghana to inform strategies to improve the reproductive health of the low-income group. The study uses a mixed-method design. A structured survey questionnaire was administered to 121 kayayei. Further, 44 participants were selected from the 121 kayeyei to participate in focus group discussions (FGD). These were complemented with individual interviews of a pharmacist, a chemist shop attendants, and a drug peddler [unlicensed medicine walker]. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse the quantitative data from the survey questionnaire, while descriptive coding was used to analyse the qualitative data from FGDs, interviews and field observation. The findings revealed that male partners’ approval was the major determinant of contraceptive use among the participating migrant female head porters. Some 90% of women who were less likely to use contraceptives are those who never discuss or get approval from their partners. Oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices (IUD) and condoms were the most used contraceptive among the kayayei. Participants’ choice of contraceptives was influenced by affordability, accessibility and their perceptions about contraceptive security. The study also identified that side effects from the use of contraceptives, including inconveniences on menstruation, weight gain, and weight loss, were a set of factors that demotivate contraceptives use among the research participants. The study also identified that, although culture has a significant influence on contraceptive use in Africa generally, in the case of migrant young women who have escaped from the cultural scrutiny of their home communities, their sexual partners, rather than culture, have a significant influence on their contraceptives use. The study, therefore, recommends an aggressive public education campaign on contraceptives use targeting both kayayei and their sexual partners in Ghanaian cities, while family planning services are accessible and affordable to this low-income group.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115047832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through quantitative data gathered, an interview was conducted to have a deeper sense of the information collected. A total of 113 respondents were purposively selected to answer the instruments and 10 of them were chosen to participate in an interview for the qualitative part of the study. It was revealed that most respondents have authoritarian parents and are emotionally adjusting. In addition, there is no significant relationship between parenting style and emotional regulation. Furthermore, there is no significant difference in parenting styles and emotional regulation when grouped according to profile such as age and duration. The results gathered were supported by sikolohiyang Pilipino (Filipino psychology) which discussed the maturity, culture, and values of Filipinos and their families. These data were used to construct a counseling program to help students with blended families adapt to the changes that they will encounter.","PeriodicalId":448344,"journal":{"name":"International journal of humanities and social sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130354229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
