However, it is often useful to have generic record combinators, that is, functions that work with complete records of varying structure. Traditionally, generic record combinators can only be implemented in dynamically typed languages.\u0000 In this paper, we present a record system for Haskell that allows us to define generic record combinators without giving up static type checks. The system is implemented as a library so that it works without modifications to the language. We achieve this mainly by using advanced type system features such as type equality constraints, type families, and higher-rank polymorphism. A key contribution of our paper is a technique for emulating subkinds, including subkind polymorphism. We use this to give the record system additional expressiveness.\u0000 Our system is not only useful in itself. It also shows what features should be taken into account when designing language support for records.

While many works in the literature study them in call-by-value, several recent works have shown call-by-name delimited control operators are also worth studying.\u0000 In this paper, we study semantic foundation of the call-by-name variant of the delimited-control operators "shift" and "reset". In particular, we give a set of direct-style equations as axioms for them, and prove that it is sound and complete with respect to the CPS translation by Biernacka and Biernacki. The key observations in our proof are (1) we need to carefully treat linearity of certain variables in the CPS terms, and (2) we must distinguish continuation variables from ordinary variables. We also mention that our axioms can be used for typed calculus.

Conversely, arithmetic implementations of pairs, powersets, von Neumann ordinals shade new light on the bi-interpretability between Peano arithmetic and a theory of hereditarily finite sets.\u0000 As another instance, rooted ordered binary trees representing a simplified form of the type language of Goedel's System T are shown as directly emulating arithmetic and finite set operations.\u0000 The main contribution of the paper is a fully constructive unification of paradigms - a chain of type classes does it all: Peano arithmetic, sets, sequences, binary trees, bitstrings. Another contribution is that we do it "efficiently" (i.e. in time and space asymptotically comparable with standard binary representations).\u0000 The Haskell code in the paper is available at http://logic.cse.unt.edu/tarau/research/2010/shared.hs.

Similar query optimization techniques are desirable for deductive databases and, to make this happen, we need to be able to collect data statistics for Datalog predicates. The difficulty is, however, that Datalog predicates can be recursive. In this paper, we propose an algorithm, called SDP, that estimates Datalog query sizes efficiently by maintaining the statistical dependency information for derived predicates. Base predicate statistics are computed and summarized using dependency matrices, and derived predicate statistics are computed by evaluating rules in an abstract way with rule bodies replaced with algebraic expressions over the dependency matrices. Recursive rules are handled by a fixed point evaluation. Our experimental study validates that: 1) SDP produces better query size estimates than using base predicate statistics and propagating them to derived predicates using the argument independence assumption; 2) the estimates largely preserve the relative order of real query sizes and thus can be used to guide cost based query optimizers.

Type inference in intuitionistic linear logic 直觉线性逻辑中的类型推理

By understanding these side conditions as unknowns we then reduce type inference to solving a system of arithmetic constraints. We show that these constraint systems fall into a tractable class hence leading to an efficient (polynomial-time) solution.\u0000 There are two important restrictions: first, our source language is typed System F rather than untyped lambda calculus; this is necessary because type inference for System F is known to be undecidable. Second, we assume that sharing is made explicit in the input, thus we do not try to automatically infer opportunities for sharing identical subterms. Relieving the latter restriction is left as a challenge for future work.

We introduce two relations, representing the idea of sub-behaviour from the point of view of the client and the server, respectively, and characterize the sub-behaviour relation (from the literature) as the intersection of the other two. A declarative approach to model business processes has recently been advocated as a viable complement to, or even replacement of, more traditional imperative-style workflow definition languages. Such an approach offers multiple advantages especially in the context of so-called flexible business processes where the processes and the underlying workflow definitions tend to change over time.\u0000 One major innovation of the Saturn language is the way in which it deals with the task lifecycle. This concerns to what extent tasks are considered not as atomic entities, but as possibly overlapping processes that can be started, stopped or cancelled at a later time. Contrary to other approaches, the task lifecycle is fully incorporated in Saturn's semantics and must not be modelled explicitly in the workflow design. As a result, the power of the declarative formalism underlying the language is more fully exploited and we offer both an elegant and pragmatic solution to a known problem. Moreover, Saturn is extensible and allows to model the environment of the business process, i.e. the external elements that influence its execution. A preliminary experimental evaluation shows our implementation of Saturn to be competitive, and a first version of the system is currently being integrated in a commercial application under development.

Such calculi can also be given a logic programming interpretation: the Twelf system is based on such an interpretation of LF. We consider here whether a conventional logic programming language can provide the benefits of a Twelf-like system for encoding type and proof-and-formula dependencies. In particular, we present a simple mapping from LF specifications to a set of formulas in the higher-order hereditary Harrop (hohh) language, that relates derivations and proof-search between the two frameworks. We then show that this encoding can be improved by exploiting knowledge of the well-formedness of the original LF specifications to elide much redundant type-checking information. The resulting logic program has a structure that closely resembles the original specification, thereby allowing LF specifications to be viewed as hohh meta-programs. Using the Teyjus implementation of λ Prolog, we show that our translation provides an efficient means for executing LF specifications, complementing the ability that the Twelf system provides for reasoning about them.
