In this paper, we propose a fast cross-layer handover scheme based on movement prediction in mobile WiMAX environment. Prediction is achieved by linear regression model with keeping track of the signal strength of mobile users. With the help of the prediction, layer-3 handover activities are able to occur prior to layer-2 handover, and therefore, total handover latency can be reduced. The experiments conducted with system parameters and propagation model defined by WiMAX Forum demonstrate that the proposed method predicts the future signal level accurately and reduces the total handover latency.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129524511","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For DHT-based P2P networks, several approaches have been proposed. They explicitly or implicitly maintain a spanning tree so that each non-leaf peer forwards broadcast messages to its children along the spanning tree. When peers are uniformly distributed, it is highly expected that the broadcast message will reach all peers by at most O(log N) hops where N is the network size. We study fast broadcast on DHT-based P2P networks in finer time granularity. In a round, an activated peer - that has received the broadcast message - can unicast the message to a non-activated peer - that has not yet received the message. We try to rearrange the forwardings in an existing spanning tree. A non-activated peer finds an activated peer in a bottom-up approach. When the search is restricted to on the path from a peer to the root, we present an algorithm, denoted as BSR (Broadcast Schedule Rearranger), to rearrange the forwardings. Simulation results show that when there are enough peers in the network, the number of rounds of the resultant broadcast schedule is close to log2N.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128301763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the number of stations increases, the performance dramatically decreases since the probability of packet collision increases. Due to these reasons, there have been many research efforts to reduce the packet collisions via backoff reservation schemes. However, the schemes have limitations in that they cannot be implemented in currently deployed wireless devices since they require the header of IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) frame to be modified. In contrast to the pre-existing schemes, without the modification of the MAC frame header, the proposed scheme, DBRS, mitigates the packet collisions using a novel distributed backoff reservation and scheduling scheme. Through extensive simulations, the DBRS scheme is proved that stations achieve higher throughput and better fairness compared with the legacy IEEE 802.11 DCF.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129066098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we suggest a grid-based system that not only conducts experiment remotely in real time but also records and replays the result for later use. The proposed architecture for recording and replay services is based on Globus Toolkit. It also uses a streaming server called Narada Brokering which is based on a publish-subscribe paradigm. The proposed system was designed for a hybrid remote experiment prototype for Real Time Hybrid Testing Facility in Korea Construction Engineering Development (KOCED) project. We hope that the proposed system will increase the usefulness of the result of the previously-conducted experiment as well as eliminate the cost of duplicating the previous experiments. A preliminary performance evaluation of the system is presented.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115723859","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose two mobile P2P systems that have double-layered topology. In these systems, peers are classified into two groups, super peers and sub-peers and a super peer has zero or more sub-peers. In the proposed systems, when a peer wants to search a file, there is no need of multi-broadcasting because each super peer maintains the appropriate information of its sub-peers and because a pair of super peers communicate each other along only the route from one super peer to the other via some sub-peers since there may be no direct connection between a pair of super peers. The experimental results show that the proposed systems outperform a typical mobile P2P system in terms of the average number of messages to find target files while maintaining the same search accuracy.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124225129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In IP-based networks where resources are shared but cannot be reserved, it is difficult to prevent temporary congestion from occurring. Therefore, when temporary network congestion occurs, some packets will be discarded, resulting in the deterioration in the user's perceptual video quality. This paper first evaluates the relationship between packet discarding patterns and perceptual video quality is evaluated, assuming the delivery of UDP-based MPEG2 streaming videos. Based on the evaluation, this paper proposes the optimal packet discarding patterns which do not lead to any deterioration in the perceptual video quality and indicates that the perceptual video quality deterioration can be avoided by selecting an appropriate packet discarding pattern, if the total number of discarding packets is less than several percent of all packets being generated. The practical applicability of the proposed method is also examined.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"176 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114747197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the mobility between heterogeneous wireless networks, the quality of multimedia services for users depends heavily on seamless handover which should be provided by the middleware of IP to MAC protocol stack. IEEE 802.21 is designed for this reason which provided the basic platform for seamless handover between heterogeneous wireless networks. In this paper, a dynamically adjusted buffer component with algorithm for prediction of the buffer size is proposed to enhance the functionality of IEEE 802.21. The mechanism of proposed scheme included Service Specific Layer which decides the opportunity of handover, and adjusted Buffer which stores the temporal streaming data for applications between handover. The services and communication flows among service specific layer, buffer and IEEE 802.21 Media Independent Handover function are described and analyzed. According to analysis of the connection process and simulation, buffer prediction and pre-allocation could indeed reduce the influence of handover between heterogeneous wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124675151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Because the life time of each sensor node affects the life time of whole sensor network, so many researches about prolonging sensor life time have been done. Nonetheless, the most part of such researches have tended to center around the study on collecting information at the fixed position. Therefore if there are several mobile sinks in wireless sensor network these researches aren't suitable. Thus we propose a cluster-based routing protocol for supporting mobile sinks in sensor network which provides reliable, scalable and efficient data delivery in a sensor network which includes several mobile sinks. This paper will focus on the efficiency of energy consumption. So we construct and maintain permanent grid structure to reduce the number of flooding control packets. Also we figure out void grid problems to support reliability.","PeriodicalId":447966,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Conference on Information Networking","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129545482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
