As reported, the typical American checks his or her smart-phone once every six-and-a-half minutes, or 150 times daily. By Liberty Mutual Insurance, it is found that 60 percent of people surveyed said they often drafted emails or updated their Facebook status on the move, even though 70 percent knew full well the risks of striding into oncoming traffic unawares.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121060237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The widely distributed IoT devices contribute to building an effective smart urban surveillance system, which manages the regular operations and handles emergencies. The real time monitoring uploads massive amounts of data to the backbone network and requires prompt feedbacks. The recent rapid development of \"Edge Computing\" (also called \"Fog Computing\" or Mobile Edge Computing in different literature) aims at pushing the computation and storage resources from the remote data center to the edge of network for reducing the burden of backbone and the computing latency In this paper, we design a three-tier edge computing system architecture to elastically adjust computing capacity and dynamically route data to proper edge servers for the real-time surveillance applications. A system prototype integrating Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is implemented in an OpenStack based virtualization environment. Moreover, we introduce schemes of resource reallocation and workload balance in urgent situations. Experimental results of the prototype show the great potentials of using edge computing for future large-scale and distributed smart urban surveillance applications.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123036387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose an architecture called Smart Web of Things (SWoT) to address this problem. The SWoT architecture extends the REST architectural style that has been validated by PC Web and mobile Web to the smart IoT arena. However, previous researches have shown that such extension is nontrivial. According to Vint Cerf, intelligent Web is heavy, difficult to be realized in resource constrained smart IoT devices. We propose a novel co-designed hardware-software stack, called Φ-Stack, to natively support Web and intelligence (e.g., pattern recognition and deep learning), with minimized cost, footprint, response time, and energy consumption. This hardware-software stack must be an open architecture, to encourage innovations and accommodate diversity inherent in the smart IoT field. Preliminary experiment results show that our approach is promising in extending the Web technology to resource constrained smart IoT environments and helpful in partially unifying APIs and interactions among smart IoT devices.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"177 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126067592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Surveillance systems are heavily utilized by police departments to assist in solving crimes. People rely on surveillance systems to provide them with real-time events taking place inside and outside properties they own. The probability that a smart homeowner can act sooner than later when emergencies arise provides the homeowner a sense of security. In an emergency, time is of the essence and a smart home equipped with the right tools and devices can give a smart homeowner an edge over his/her non-smart home counterpart. Therefore, it is important that the process of converting a home to a smart one is not a complex one. The ease of installation, operation, and maintenance of smart home devices unarguably plays an important role in the wide spread use of smart homes around us. This paper mainly discusses early experiences related to the installation of a surveillance system, the challenges faced during installation, problems encountered after installation, and a glimpse into future work. It presents areas and issues in a smart home that require more investigation in the hope of intriguing researchers to further study smart homes and tackle existing issues.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"59 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116144255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Energy Internet using electric vehicles (EVs) can transfer and distribute energy to every energy user contributing to the mobility of EVs. Energy Internet using EVs is what we call EV Energy Internet. The main idea of this paper focus on the optimization problem of how to deploy energy routers in an EV Energy Internet. We develop a branch solution. Simulations using real-world transporting data in Manhattan and the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority(PVTA) show that this method is efficient.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122825532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to address the demand of massive data, low latency and low power consumption in IoT applications, the wireless industry is moving to its fifth generation (5G). Due to high computational requirements in the 5G, DSP(Digital Signal Processor) will play an important role in the 5G and IoT. Swift DSP is a novel high-performance DSP, with the support of SIMD (Signal Instruction Multiple Data) and VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) to achieve high parallelism. In order to implement application on Swift based 5G testbed, compile tools are needed. Because of the unique architecture feature of Swift, there is no existing compile tools appropriate for Swift. Thus, we implement a set of optimized compile tools for Swift to exploit parallelism while developing applications. It uses C as programming language which is general and easy for users to develop and implement applications. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our VLIW packetizer, SIMD vectorization. For VLIW, it improves performance by 56% because almost every program will have some independent instructions. SIMD achieves 35% performance improvement since data in 5G is always high-dimensional. The combination of them gains 55% to 65% on average.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134210555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, such devices would leverage our understanding and capabilities of big data, deep analysis and artificial intelligence to solve problems in real-time. The IoT paradigm has successfully benefited many applications in the social sciences and industries. However, in the rise of IoT, there is at least one question that has been left unanswered: Can Quantitative Finance (QF) benefit from IoT? The QF is a field that extends sophisticated mathematical models and utilizes advanced computer techniques to link with global finance markets. By taking market and social information as input, a QF model can derive profitable insights and control the risk to make trading decisions. Today, many Internet-based techniques are extensively employed in the field as: (a) market and social data is provided via Internet; (b) big data infrastructures are built in the Cloud; and (c) deep learning tools are accessible in Internet. Even trading models and strategies could be exerted through Internet. In this paper, we will provide an overview of challenges and opportunities presented by this new paradigm in the QF industry. To unlock the potential of IoT, a system architecture, termed QuantCloud, is proposed for modern quantitative trading firms in the field.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130173047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We had proposed a scheme based on Meet-Table and Cloud Computing to realize it. In this paper, we propose Meet-Fog, a scheme based on Meet-Table and Fog Computing, to distribute negative messages in VANET with more efficiency, for Fog Computing can be used to optimize computing, communication and storage between edge and cloud. The architecture and formal model of Meet-Fog are given, and related algorithms are described in detail. The analysis results show that Meet-Fog is a good scheme for negative message distribution as it has high coverage percentage and high accurate coverage percentage at the same time. Meet-Fog can also sharply reduce bandwidth and storage requirements of cloud, and completely move computing requirements from cloud to the edge.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123299201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, traditional data mining algorithms (neural network and support vector machine) are subject to some hardly conquerable drawbacks such as being easy to fall into local optimum, poor generalization capability, and difficult to determine the model. To overcome the above issues, a new short-term load forecasting method based on wavelet decomposition and random forest regression(RF) is proposed. On the one hand, wavelet decomposition algorithm is a valid method to extract the load of different components as the training set. On the other hand, RF algorithm suffers less from the problem of over fitting and determining difficultly the model parameters. Wavelet analysis and RF are introduced and applied for short term load forecasting, which is helpful to improve the accuracy of load forecasting. The historic load data is selected from a certain area of Anhui province in this paper. Compared with the traditional BP neural network, support vector machine, and not improved RF, the proposed method has higher forecasting accuracy.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132771504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a novel fault diagnostic technique for photovoltaic systems based on Cascaded Forest. Through the in-depth analysis of the output of PV arrays from a data platform of Shijiazhuang Kelin Electric Co, the input variables of the diagnosis model are obtained. Compared with other fault diagnosis methods for the PV array, the proposed method can work under a small number of tagged data and the system can be run online and real-time. Finally, the experimental results show that the fault diagnosis method for the PV array based on the cascading forests can effectively detect four types of fault for PV array such as short-circuit, open-circuit, abnormal degradation and partial shading. This method has a good value for the intelligent fault diagnosis of PV.","PeriodicalId":446149,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Workshop on Smart Internet of Things","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122747327","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
