An ultrasound-driven cold air flow using mist vaporization cools a spot on a skin while a light beam irradiation produces a hot spot near the cooled spot. The cold and hot stimuli presented simultaneously produce a pain sensation without damage of the skin. We clarify the relationship between the pain sensation and the temperature change on the skin observed by a thermography camera. Since it is a noncontact method, we can evaluate the precise condition of the skin temperature distribution for the thermal grill illusion. This study provides a scientific tool to clarify the thermal grill illusion as well as a practical pain display.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127889233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A popular method of developing the skills required to manipulate the instruments successfully is through the use of virtual reality (VR) simulators. However, the interfaces of current VR simulators have several shortcomings and a major challenge of addressing the shortcomings is to unobtrusively access the central, co-axial guidewire for haptics. This work sets out to explore two different approaches for applying force to the concentric guidewire: direct non-contact electromagnetic force application and a custom actuator designed to be embedded within a catheter hub. An initial implementation of the hub actuator approach was able to produce a suitably strong resistance effect when the guidewire is advanced, but further work is needed to reduce the actuator size while maintaining the level of resistance.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124134010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each of the thousand plus dance styles in existence across the globe come with their own movements and patterns; yet they all depend on synchronization with music beats. Dance moves are choreographed for certain moves to occur on certain beats of the music with a certain tempo. A challenge of learning any dance style is keeping track of the music beats. SwingBeats is a real time, haptic feedback system under research an development that helps dancers stay on beat with the music. As a supplemental training tool for new dancers who have no formal background in music or dance it enables the learner to dance to any music even if they have never heard that music before and thus broadens the spectrum of music one can dance to. SwingBeats teaches learners to move their bodies to the beat of the music and thus intuitively develop a sense of beat and rhythm. In doing so, it helps learners become better dancers more quickly.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"200 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133879023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the several core activities of the WG is to standardize haptic codecs for human-in-the-loop applications. This subsumes standardization of haptic handshake scheme for orchestration between heterogeneous nodes for seamless TI interaction. To this end, we present a novel haptic handshake protocol that facilitates exchange of haptic metadata between TI nodes through Tactile Internet Metadata (TIM) scheme. Through WebRTC-based implementation and real haptic devices, we provide a proof of concept of the proposed protocol. The mean and the standard deviation of the handshake latency is measured to be 47.25 ms and 23.38 ms, respectively, thereby making it a strong candidate for employment in TI applications. Finally, we shed light on future refinements to our implementation.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129407955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This will extremely demand an ultra-low latency with high availability, reliability and secure networks, which is referred to as the Tactile Internet. In the frame of preparing the adequate infrastructure for haptic communications, that play a major role in Tactile Internet, this article estimates several key performance indicators (KPIs) such as jitter, end-2-end delay, throughput and packet loss through simulations of different networks backbones (Wi-Fi, 3G and WiMAX) using Riverbed modeler. These KPIs help us evaluate the network’s performance, taking into consideration the distance from users to the access point, the different types of applications as well as their minimum Quality of Service (QoS).","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127195444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Internal Haptic Perspective (IHP) was compared to the standard external perspective (EHP) through a pseudorandom test method, and trialed on healthy and blindfolded individuals as proxies for the VI. Results showed that its application on Capital Letters led to an increase in accuracy by +15% as well as faster identification based upon t-testing and F-testing on lognormally distributed time scales by 41 seconds, while Household Objects also yielded improvements for accuracy at +20%. Overall, the IHP outperformed EHP when looking at the data as a whole (+9% and less 23 seconds); however, further testing on actual VI participants and a wider range of objects is needed to support this projection.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134346414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ultrasound was applied with amplitude and lateral modulation, and the tactile and bone-conduction thresholds for them were obtained. The results showed that the tactile stimulation with lateral modulation was perceived stably, while the bone-conduction sound was perceivable only at sweet spots in the experimental setup. Even at the sweet spots, the tactile and bone-conduction thresholds were comparable. A potential application of this study is a non-contact personal warning system, where a focused ultrasound irradiates the face of a pedestrian walking at the edge of a train-station platform, for example. Considering this application, we also conducted experiments on the reaction time for the highest intensity by the used ultrasound device. The results showed that the average reaction time to the facial stimulus was 0.48 s. Though it became longer to 0.74 s when the participants were under a 2-back task, the simulation was noticed in all the cases of the experiment.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122068510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Involvement of human subjects and multi-faceted nature of the problem requiring expertise in a multitude of disciplines make sign language interpretation an exigent research problem. Purpose of this paper is to present the experience and findings of international collaborative research conducted over several years on vision-based sign language translation. At first, this paper extends a discussion on sign language and its variations, machine-based translation and its significance. Secondly, a discussion on how three main tasks within the machine translation, namely: a) hand localization and tracking, b) hand posture interpretation, and c) hand gesture interpretation, can be addressed. Finally, research challenges, possible approaches, and future extensions are discussed.","PeriodicalId":446032,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE International Symposium on Haptic, Audio and Visual Environments and Games (HAVE)","volume":"455 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125796226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
