Severity of symptoms ranges from erythema to dry desquamation (dry flaky skin with itching) to moist desquamation (serous exudate, oedema and blistering). Level 1 evidence1-3 reporting effectiveness of barrier films for preventing RD. Some studies2-4 showed statistically significant reductions in severity of RD and reduction in patient-reported symptoms.; however, the volume of evidence was small. Largest effect was achieved with a silicone-based barrier film forming gel dressing that was associated with a 41% reduction in risk of grade 2 RD.4 Level 1 and 3 evidence4, 5 failed to demonstrate a benefit in using a barrier film to treat existing RD.","PeriodicalId":44572,"journal":{"name":"Wound Practice and Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42843768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Abnormalities in the colour, shape and clinical appearance of nails can be indicative of pathophysiological disorders, habit-tics such as bitten nails, poor grooming, nutritional deficits and cosmetic practices. Discolouration and changes in nail appearance are common reasons for referral of individuals to dermatologists. This paper presents a mélange of common nail disorders with a clinical focus on those that present with discolouration.","PeriodicalId":44572,"journal":{"name":"Wound Practice and Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49059996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although clinically heterogenous, the typical presentation is of discrete, well-demarcated patches of non-scarring hair loss. In severe AA, complete loss of scalp hair (alopecia totalis, AT) or all hair (alopecia universalis, AU) may occur. There is considerable variation in how AA is treated by dermatologists. Recent insights into the aetiopathogenesis of AA have led to the emergence of several novel treatment strategies, including Janus kinase inhibitors and biologics. This review provides a contemporary evidence-based summary of AA, including clinical features, severity assessment, disease pathogenesis and current and emerging treatment strategies","PeriodicalId":44572,"journal":{"name":"Wound Practice and Research","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48844176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
