The purpose of the present work was to describe the avifauna of the Lago Pôr do Sol, an urban lake in the municipality of Iporá in the state of Goiás, central Brazil. The fieldwork was carried out from May 2001 to April 2002, during 24 biweekly visits to the area. A transect was used to estimate species richness and bird abundance. A total of 70 species (27.2/month) belonging in 32 families and 1,701 bird findings (141.6 findings/month) were recorded. Twenty-six (37.1%) of the species found in Iporá were not recorded in a similar survey in Goiânia, 234 km away. This seems to reflect differences in the original Cerrado physiognomies in the two areas. The division of species in trophic categories showed the Iporá bird community to be dominated by omnivorous and insectivorous species. However, considering the number of individuals for any trophic level, there was a prevalence of insectivores. On the other hand, species and individuals were distributed among four habitat categories, which are related to significant habitat heterogeneity in the lake. The Range Centre Index values for most species is under 0.5, suggesting that the Lago Pôr do Sol is close to the midpoint of the geographical ranges of the bird species recorded. \u0000Keywords: Cerrado, community, Goiás State, Range Centre Index, urban birds.

Mey (Clusiaceae). We selected 30 young plants in trails of Refugio Charles Darwin, an Atlantic forest fragment in Pernambuco, Brazil. The height of each plant was measured and the number of leaves, leaves with galls, and galls per leaf were counted. Leaves with galls were collected from ten specimens and brought to laboratory to be described and to have the inductor observed. We observed galls in only ten individuals of the thirty initially selected. The number of galls per plant varied from 3 to 336. Out of 1,399 leaves inspected, 541 galls were counted in 137 leaves. The galls were deep green, elliptical, crossing the abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces, preferentially located at the center of the leaf (H=23,48; p<0.01; n=137), but with 49% at the leaf margin. The galls had 5.5 mm and 4.7 mm bearing one larval chamber with one larvae, and were induced by an unidentified species of Hymenoptera. \u0000Keywords: Cecidomyiidae, trophic interaction, plant-herbivore interaction, herbivory, galls.

We recorded bats using ground-level mist-nets erected in several environments within the park, and searched for bat roosts. Of a total of 33 species of bats recorded in the reserve to date, 24 bat species were recorded during this study,12 of which were first records for the park. Seeds of Cecropia predominated in the fecal samples of stenodermatine bats, and seeds of Piper were the main item in the fecal samples of Carollia perspicillata. We also got the first records of bats consuming fruits of Vismia magnoliifolia. Peaks of reproduction of bats in PERD occurred in the wet season, except for Desmodus rotundus, which was found reproductively active during the dry season. We suggest that the relative abundance of common species such as D. rotundus and Artibeus lituratus in the most disturbed areas within PERD may be correlated with distinct degrees of disturbance. \u0000Keywords: Atlantic forest, Minas Gerais, frugivory, Vismia magnoliifolia, Cecropia, bat reproduction, bioindicator.

Four marsupials — Didelphis albiventris Lund, Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister), Marmosops incanus (Lund), Philander frenatus (Olfers) — and four rodents — Sciurus aestuans Linnaeus, Akodon montensis Thomas, Rhipidomys mastacalis (Lund) and Mus musculus Linnaeus — were found between March 2003 and February 2004. The most abundant species were M. incanus and S. aestuans, representing respectively 50% and 20% of the individuals recorded. Terrestrial habits were detected for A. montensis and D. albiventris, scansorial habits for G. agilis, M. incanus, P. frenatus, and S. aestuans, while R. mastacalis was exclusively arboreal. There was positive correlation between rainfall and population abundance for D. albiventris, and positive correlation between recruitment rates and rainfall for M. incanus. Rapid turnover rates suggested short residence time for most species. Three reproductive patterns were identified: prolonged reproduction during both seasons in R. mastacalis, reproduction during the dry season in G. agilis, and reproduction during the wet season in the remaining species. Only individuals of D. albiventris, M. incanus, R. mastacalis, and S. aestuans were detected across the paved road that runs through the fragment, suggesting that the road may be a barrier to the other species. \u0000Keywords: small mammals, secondary forest, community ecology, population dynamics, seasonality.
