The article provides intellectual backgrounds, especially drawing from Willie James Jennings’s work, describes the class in terms of its course objectives and guiding epigrams, and details three “discernment projects”: the Forest Kinship Project; the Passion Project; and the Exorcism Project, each of which paired study of Scripture (Mark 1:12–13; Luke 22–23; and Synoptic accounts of exorcisms, respectively) with a place-specific experience.","PeriodicalId":44542,"journal":{"name":"INTERPRETATION-A JOURNAL OF BIBLE AND THEOLOGY","volume":"17 1","pages":"154 - 165"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72766980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the root of the many letters from the sixth-century Gazan monastery of Thavatha is a concern about the meaning of illness, not so much a diagnosis of a medical problem as a discernment of how natural and demonic influences intertwine, and how bodily and mental afflictions make sense within the spiritual “progress” of the monk. For Barsanuphius and John, the great old men of Gaza, the Bible offered models to reframe suffering in line with their ascetic spirituality.","PeriodicalId":44542,"journal":{"name":"INTERPRETATION-A JOURNAL OF BIBLE AND THEOLOGY","volume":"9 1","pages":"143 - 153"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81902305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The one account that most closely matches its cosmic orientation is the poetic description of creation given in Job 38–41. The Fidesz party––led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a right-wing populist––was eager to meet with representatives of a Christian seminary. Orbán’s party members spoke repeatedly about the importance of protecting “Christian values” through aggressive anti-immigration legislation, defining legal marriage in strictly heterosexual terms, and increasing birth rates among ethnic Hungarians. Our largely progressive group was deeply confused. Several students asked various forms of the same question: “What Christian values in particular are you talking about?” The politicians kept responding with the same list of policies. Finally, our translator and guide interrupted and explained, “They want an actual list of values. They want you to talk about the Bible, or Christian theology.” The politicians looked puzzled and could only repeat their list of policy positions.","PeriodicalId":44542,"journal":{"name":"INTERPRETATION-A JOURNAL OF BIBLE AND THEOLOGY","volume":"5 1","pages":"83 - 87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74304309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
