Filipino older persons live with their family members as central figures tasked to assure family cohesion and harmony. This is a shared relationship with the family serving as the older persons’ primary source of social and spiritual support. However, with the changing social landscape, more and more Filipino older persons now live in institutions away from their families. This situation was the impetus for conducting a study to determine and compare the levels of religiosity, spirituality, and death anxiety among older adults living at home and in institutional facilities. Following the selection procedure for participation, a sample of 125 older adults were included; those living with their families (n = 67) and those living in institutional facilities for the elderly/ senior care residences/ nursing homes (n = 58). Data were collected using the Spirituality Scale, Revised Death Anxiety Scale, and Dimension of Religiosity Scale. The study revealed that there was a significant difference in the level of death anxiety and spirituality between the participants living at home and in institutional facilities. No significant difference was noted on their level of religiosity. Fifteen middle- and old-aged Christian pastors and parishioners from a metropolitan Canadian city participated in this qualitative descriptive study which involved purposive sampling and open-ended semi-structured interviews. The qualitative interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analysed. Participants expressed their thoughts on how religious involvements had allowed them to cope with stress, secure lasting and supportive relationships, and keep their minds active. All participants agreed that religious involvement extended beyond simple attendance. Religious involvement appears to be a significant contributor to the mental health of pastors and parishioners, potentially guarding their cognitive function against the negative impacts of stress. The findings have implications for the incorporation of individuals’ religious/ spiritual needs in their circle of care particularly for the elderly dealing with cognitive deterioration.","PeriodicalId":44539,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion Spirituality & Aging","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86823600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present qualitative study explored older adults’ lived experiences within Christian and Jewish faith communities via structured interviews. Participants reported vital aspects of aging within their faith communities, including Significance of Age, Experiences of Support, Connection and Belonging, Understanding of Isolation/Exclusion, and Invitations for Transition. Key themes are discussed in detail, along with potential future directions to better support older adults within religious and spiritual communities. Implications for education and practice are considered.","PeriodicalId":44539,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion Spirituality & Aging","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75562774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some perceive the sacred as their relationship with a divinity (e.g., God, gods, Higher Power). Others consider the sacred to be something bigger than themselves (e.g., the Universe, Nature, guiding life philosophy). The self may also be considered sacred by some. The current research suggests that family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) with strong connections with the sacred have fewer symptoms of depression, more positive perceptions of the caregiving experience, improved coping, and bolstered resilience. This research, however, does not take into consideration the stage of ADRD that a caregiver’s loved one is in, which may be an important factor. In this study, we were interested in learning more about caregivers’ conceptualizations of the sacred at the beginning of their caregiving journey. Twenty-seven family caregivers of persons with early-stage ADRD (CDR = 1) were interviewed using the Dimensions of Caregiving Interview (DCI). Thematic Analysis was utilized as our methodology. Findings revealed several themes: 1) There is diversity in conceptualizations of the sacred among caregivers; 2) Caregivers perceive the sacred as having distinct characteristics, traits, and functions; and 3) The nature of the relationship with the sacred can be important to adaptation in the early-stages of the caregiving journey. Recommendations for practice and future research are provided.","PeriodicalId":44539,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion Spirituality & Aging","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73062369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Earlier studies pointed out that spiritual needs might be related to aspects of patient functioning such as mental health or pain experiences. In this study, we aimed to provide insight into the prevalence of religious, existential, inner peace and giving/generativity needs in a convenience sample of geriatric patients in Flanders, Belgium. We also investigated the group differences in religious and existential needs based on patients’ religious or spiritual background. Furthermore, we aimed to clarify how these needs are related to two indicators of patient functioning, more precisely depressive symptoms and pain intensity. Our results showed that items related to inner peace needs, giving/generativity needs, and religious needs were reported as most prevalent whereas existential needs scored lowest. Religious needs were mostly reported by religious patients, whereas existential needs were reported by patients with various religious or spiritual backgrounds. Regression analysis showed that existential needs were a significant predictor of depressive symptoms and of pain intensity, whereas religious needs did not function as a predictor. Caregivers interested in taking care of the whole person, might profit from the results of this study in order to get more insight into geriatric patients’ spiritual needs.","PeriodicalId":44539,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Religion Spirituality & Aging","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2021-06-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81108459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
