However, in order to achieve that far reaching goal, select concepts of computing autonomy have to be suitably ported to IoT architecture. Recently reported works describe various frameworks, models and protocols for computing autonomy. Some others focus more on the practical implementation of autonomy using self-star (self-*) behavior in end nodes. This work proposes an autonomic architecture for IoT based on IBM's autonomic framework. An accompanying protocol for service communication is also presented. Preliminary tests prove its suitability in an IoT environment from the perspective of energy conservation for the network.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116764574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, batteries are expensive and have a limited life time. Having a deep understanding of how batteries operate in working situations is crucial to designing advanced control mechanisms. Battery performance and life time is highly dependent on how it is used and also on environmental working conditions. While batteries have been extensively studied through model-based approaches, there is no previous work about modeUng behavior based on data analytic methods. In this paper, we propose an integrated data-driven framework to study the behavior of battery systems in a grid, based on data mining techniques. The proposed method provides a high level characterization of battery behavior and online parameter estimation using supervised and unsupervised learning methods. This work can be used in intelligent control systems and would help administrators to know what is happening inside a battery.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124707171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a case study investigating the impact of EV charging at households on a typical Malaysia Low Voltage (LV) network. The residential LV network sample is provided by the local power utility (namely TNB) and some rearrangement of house load's connection to feeders was made to comply with the utility's requirement. In addition, the LV network has been modelled in detail to take into account the neutral wire and the self and mutual impedance of the cable. The impact of the EV charging on both newly developed residential areas and mature residential areas were evaluated in terms of voltage profile, voltage unbalance as well as feeders and transformer thermal limit. Results from the presented studies indicate that the LV network can safely accommodate 10% safe EV penetration level for a mature residential area without any controlled charging method being applied. However, with controlled charging strategy, the EV penetration level can be increased up to 60% without adverse effect to the system parameters such as voltage. For the case of a new residential LV network, the increase was from 20% to 100% EV penetration level. Furthermore, it is important to mention that the impact of EV is very locational and network dependent.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"293 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122154625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the penetration level rises, connected VRGs inject as much energy as the existing resource permits. It is therefore, essential to develop a technique that maintains system voltage profile, and facilitates the smoother integration of VRGs into the grid. This paper describes an approach to coordinate the use of load tap changing (LTC) transformers and switched capacitors (SCs) to improve the system-wide voltage profile due to the penetration of VRGs. Unlike other approaches that tend to optimize the size and location of VRGs, to enhance the grid performance, the proposed approach contends with the status quo of the system, with the added VRGs of different sizes and locations, and administers LTCs and SCs to regulate the system voltage. The IEEE 123 test feeder is considered as the test system in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated under various test cases through a time sequence analysis over 24-hourly simulation period. The corresponding voltage profile is analyzed under various penetration levels of solar PV.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128267206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Implementation of high quality SAS system enables one to experience less outage rate using the state-of-the-art computerized functions of monitoring, control, and protection. As a result, it can immensely reinforce the reliability index of smart grid systems. However, the inextricable interdependency of cyber and power components in an automated substation creates more vulnerable operation process. In this sense, unlike the power component outage in a substation, a failure of the cyber components in an Ethernet fashion can interrupt the operation as well. Therefore the proper selection of SAS package that offers more reliable performance may hedge massive maloperation in the system. Since the introduction of multi-vendor SAS based IEC-61850 protocol, the interoperability of various SAS components with variety of manufacturer's brands is now possible. This paper surveys the most efficient and used SAS package and the configuration in a HV substation which leads to high reliable performance. Findings can pave the future smart grid development in an effective manner.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128578507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to low measurement redundancy especially on distribution networks, the aforementioned task is inevitably challenging. In this paper, we are thus motivated to propose a maximum a posterior based mechanism, which is capable of embedding prior information on the breaker status, to enhance the identification accuracy. Building upon semidefinite programming, our goal is converted to solving a relaxed convex optimization problem. Within the optimization problem, the sparsity in prior knowledge is also promoted using compressed sensing technique to further alleviate the effect of insufficient measurements. Numerical tests on the IEEE 14-bus model corroborate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128699703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An external network reduced equivalent model is used to implement the ORPF calculation of each sub-grid. And the inter-area coupling constraint can be transformed into the injection power modified equation of external boundary bus afterwards. Therefore, the distributed solution of multi-area ORPF problem can be realized through updating of boundary bus equivalent injection power and voltage phasors. The proposed method avoids the tedious process of network equivalence and reduces the dependence on the coordination layer. Furthermore, it accords with the local feature of reactive power optimization and control properly as well. The numerical simulation results of several IEEE cases show that the proposed method is effective and suitable for online application.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124557607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is mainly due to economic factor but more importantly is public acceptance. Consequently, transmission grid operation is stressed to the limit and poses significant risks such as transmission line overloading. The overloading problem mostly occurs at congested load areas connection with low rating transmission lines. This paper describes a newly implemented adaptive load shedding scheme to minimize the amount of load loss and its duration due to transmission line overloading. The transmission line overloading detection is based on dynamic line rating and conductor temperature calculation. Quasi-optimum quantum method is used to determine the quantum of load to be shed based on the pre-determined priority of distribution feeders and real time loading. The scheme consists of distributed automation processors, control intelligent electronic devices, synchrophasors and ambient and line temperature sensors.","PeriodicalId":444960,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT ASIA)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126373947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
