The main market is the inter-bank money market in balances with the Bank of France and the operations of this market are outlined in some detail. The government bond market dominates the fixed interest markets as a whole; because the activities of these markets impinge on the money markets their operations are also surveyed. It deals in turn with the relationship between New-Classical Economics and Monetarism, the relative explanatory power of these two bodies of doctrine over empirical evidence, and the claims of New-Classical Economics to embody a superior analytic method. In both cases, the international economy suffered, although in different ways, from the disappearance of some of the “safety valves” that had made it possible during the fifties and sixties for ex ante incongruities to be resolved without impeding the generation and transmission of output and income growth. Dealing with the stylised facts, the author brings out similarities in flow structures and in the corresponding adjustment problems recurring in the cycle.
