Method Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with eight young people (aged 18-28 years) with disabled sibling(s) within an immigrant family to understand how this affects their wellbeing and relationships, identify sources of support and strain, and explore the significance of balancing different cultural expectations. We used reflexive thematic analysis to analyse the transcribed data. Results Analysis identified three themes: constant challenges, negative consequences on self and relationships, and coping strategies to overcome difficulties. Despite maintaining positive relationships with their siblings, challenges took a serious toll on young people’s psychological wellbeing and relationships. Participants used various coping strategies but desired culturally appropriate extra-familial support. Conclusions This study has highlighted the urgent requirement for policy makers to investigate how to better support young carers from diverse backgrounds.","PeriodicalId":444774,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133748539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: The current study surveyed carers of individuals with Down syndrome (n = 48) and Williams syndrome (n = 18) in the United Kingdom (UK). Results: The study reports that individuals with Down syndrome were rated higher in general reading skills and writing, while the Williams syndrome group scored higher for speaking. Yet, individuals with Down syndrome were more likely to engage in informal activities than instructional activities and the frequency of informal activities related to reading outcomes for those with Down syndrome but not Williams syndrome. Additionally, this study reports that age was not related to the HLE for both groups. Conclusion: This is the fi rst study to report on the HLE of individuals with Williams syndrome and supports the key role of the HLE in the development of literacy skills for individuals with Williams syndrome and Down syndrome.","PeriodicalId":444774,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127822216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, families are crucial agents in supporting the self-determination of their children with intellectual disability, although to date, little is known about how to support those families. Methods To address this need, the present study used a Delphi technique to build and reach a consensus on the critical components that should inform interventions targeting families to promote their children’s self-determination. Results Academics and professionals participated in this three-round Delphi study that concluded with a 90-item list of critical components for intervention, concretely relating to general principles, format, content, and methodology. Conclusions This knowledge has the potential to guide emergent intervention initiatives to support families in fostering their children’s self-determination. Implications for research and practice fields are provided and discussed.","PeriodicalId":444774,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Intellectual & Developmental Disability","volume":"232 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124786780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
