However, current solutions suffer from obstacles regarding interoperability and mobility. Seamless and suitable monitoring relies on a variety of different medical device types that transfer medical data from different locations while paying attention to security and privacy issues. Emergency scenarios require on the fly network integration and data transmission ranging from domains like patients home, medical practices, ambulances and, hospitals, where each domain may correspond to a different authority. Therefore we describe a mobility aware approach allowing out-of-the-box medical device integration and authentication, and simultaneously fulfilling the typical security and privacy requirements of e-health environments.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115213682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information content supporting location-based service discovery and path calculation is usually shallow. Semantic-based technologies can allow to overcome these limitations, by exploiting more accurate and meaningful descriptions of locations, points of interest, road segments and environmental conditions. This paper proposes a general framework leveraging an enriched cartography to enhance travel assistance and safety. The majority of available navigation systems is developed upon closed and proprietary solutions for both maps and software applications, so third parties cannot extend their functionality. Therefore the proposed framework is based on open standards and tools, particularly Semantic Web technologies and crowd-sourced maps available from OpenStreetMap. A case study is presented to assess provided benefits.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115455221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With iTrust over SMS, there is no centralized search engine or centralized control and, thus, iTrust over SMS is less vulnerable to filtering and censorship by governments, corporations, or other organizations. In this paper, we describe the iTrust over SMS search and retrieval service, as well as participation in the iTrust over SMS social network. We present the user interface of iTrust over SMS, which enables a user to share information with other users, together with use cases of the iTrust over SMS service. We also show how frequent usage of the iTrust over SMS search and retrieval service encourages further participation in the social network.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130044285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, despite the recent advancements in mobile devices and wireless technology, direct implementation of SOAP-based Web Services on mobile devices is still a challenge due to the fact that mobile devices are still resources-constrained compared to stationary dedicated servers and workstations by their limited processing power, limited memory as well as limited bandwidth and intermittent nature of wireless connectivity. This paper proposes a lightweight framework for hosting and consuming Web services on mobile devices while considering their natural limitations and constraints. The proposed framework is based on the existing Web services and mobile devices technology standards. The framework fully conforms to the REST architectural style design principles to facilitate the provision and access to Web services hosted by mobile devices.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114756828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unawareness of the energy consumption characteristics of Web service-based applications during development may cause the battery of devices, e.g., smartphones, to run out more frequently. Compared to related experimental energy consumption studies, the work at hand is the first work that focuses on factors which are specific to services computing, such as the timing of Web service invocations and the Web service response caching logic. Further, Web service invocations are the only variable energy-consuming activity included in the experiments. Based on the results, it is shown, firstly, how the execution of exactly the same Web service invocations may lead to energy consumption results that present differences of up to ca. 15% for WLAN and ca. 60% for UMTS connections, and, secondly, how rules and techniques for energy-efficient development of mobile Web service-based applications can be extracted from the gained knowledge.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130159609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When a user sends a query with his exact location to the LBS server, the server processes the query and returns Points of Interest (POIs) to the user. Providing user's exact location to the LBS server may lead revealing his private information to unauthorized parties (e.g., adversaries). There exist two main fields of research to overcome this problem. They are cloaking region based query processing method which blurs a user's location into a cloaking region and Private Information Retrieval (PIR) based query processing methods which encrypt location data by using PIR protocol. However, they suffer from high computation and communication overheads. To resolve these problems, we, in this paper, propose a hybrid scheme to process an approximate k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) query by combining above two methods. Through performance analysis, we have shown that our hybrid scheme outperforms the existing work in terms of both query processing time and accuracy of the result set.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114871600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, developing the enabling algorithms and techniques have been proven to be very challenging. Adaptive bitrate streaming method can detect a user's network bandwidth availability in real time and then adjustthe quality of a video stream accordingly. Although this method brings in many advantages, it suffers from additional storage and encoding costs, and challenges with maintaining quality globally. We propose NBS (a Network-Bandwidth-aware streaming version Switcher) system for video streaming applications. Compared with adaptive bitrate streaming method, our method is a lightweight oneby switching among different versions (e.g., high quality, medium quality, low quality) that a video streaming server provides. Moreover, our method works in an appropriate way that can balance both the responsiveness and the stability. On one hand, responsiveness is necessary because adaptive actions should be taken in a real-time manner to sustain the live streaming when the network bandwidth changes. On the other hand, too sensitive actions will deteriorate the stability and affect the perceptual quality. NBS is developed based on a feedback fuzzy controller to support the dynamic and adaptive switching. Comparing with the traditional control approaches, the fuzzy logic enables NBS to enjoy much better responsiveness and stability. We have conducted comprehensive experiments to evaluate our approach and the experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively up-scaling or down-scaling the quality of the stream according to the network bandwidth availability by a smooth and nearly unnoticeable switch without disrupting the continuous playback.","PeriodicalId":443858,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First International Conference on Mobile Services","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126273600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
