Mother Prioress, Dame Margaret Mary Lescher, laid the matter before the Bishop, who at once agreed that the Doctor’s orders should be obeyed. Carey recommended that Hastings would be the most suitable place and plans were into place. The contributors draw on other ancient near eastern law codes and cultures in order to contrast these with biblical laws, some of which appear to be designed in order to distinguish Israel from the other nations. This handsome, glossy volume contains both the Hebrew text in the Koren font and the English translation by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, enabling the reader easily to come to a better understanding of the biblical text. This bilingual format also means that this book can be used by interested parties who understand Hebrew and those who do not, but who nonetheless will benefit from the commentary on the Hebrew text. The authors do not fear to admit that we do not always know the meaning of the Hebrew text, and so (as we would expect) they seek to elucidate the text with reference to Akkadian, Hittite or Ugaritic cognates as appropriate, and occasional references to the Septuagint. Similarly, we cannot always be sure of the full significance of some practices mandated by the laws in Leviticus. The text is illustrated by photographs of animals, flora and fauna and reconstructions of vestments to be used by the priests, often based upon the writings of Rashi. The commentary might not convince a sceptical reader of the value of Leviticus in the twenty-first century, but that reader will certainly be better informed about the meaning of its content and the way in which the text fits within and may be influenced by the other cultures of the Ancient Near East. There is only one slight disappointment: it would have been very interesting to have a better idea of the way in which (and if) these laws were actually applied in ancient Israel, but that is the only disappointment with this splendid volume. The book ends with a useful table of names in unvocalised Hebrew, Koren transliteration and conventional transliteration, a list of contributors, glossary, brief description of the sources, bibliographies and the index. This volume also contains a cumulative index of all five collections, which will be invaluable to scholars wishing to examine Aelred’s treatment of specific biblical passages. Professor Lange has provided an insight into how useful this may be by herself briefly considering his use of Job 7:1. The text of the Sermons is in the familiar readable format with wide margins, and references to Aelred’s sources (biblical and non-biblical) indicated in the margin. When useful, Dr Griggs and Dr Licence have included the Latin original and occasional footnotes, usually noting when a sermon in this collection bears a striking similarity to another. Anyone who listens to the same priest (or any speaker) on a regular basis will be aware that there are themes, anecdotes and turns of phrase that are repeated, whether wittingly or not, so it should not be a surprise when some of St Aelred’s discourses are nearly the same at times; he did preach on the same feasts every year for twenty years! The translation is excellent and eminently readable, and both Dr Griggs and Dr Licence are to be warmly commended for this. The style of translation means that this volume could be used in a monastic setting during an Abbot’s or Abbess’s Conference, or an extract could be identified to be read at Matins on the relevant feast day. Similarly these sermons would be an excellent choice for spiritual reading as well as academic research on the thought of St Aelred and life at Rievaulx Abbey.
