Whilst it used to be common to build houses with subsoil mixed with straw from local fields, traditional “cob” buildings (or “bauge”, in French) now fall foul of strict thermal requirements. Here, the CobBauge team explain how, through their research, they believe they have found a way to update the technique to satisfy French and UK building regulations.","PeriodicalId":443575,"journal":{"name":"Construction Research and Innovation","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133894029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its complex design and the site’s restrictive logistics led contractor Gilbert-Ash to turn to state-of-the-art technology to ensure everything went to plan in its design and construction. This case study explains the construction challenges faced, and Gilbert-Ash’s use of Point Clouds for object-oriented modelling, software, and 3D laser imaging, which in turned has changed how the company approaches its projects.","PeriodicalId":443575,"journal":{"name":"Construction Research and Innovation","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125756000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In each category, three finalists were judged to have stood out from dozens of entrants in their use of technology to deliver construction projects. One category focussed on on the use of 4D models, while the other focussed on project delivery as a capability. Taken together, these six case studies, which include major projects and examples of business process reorganisation, provide a useful snapshot of the leading edge of industry digitalisation among contractors and clients.","PeriodicalId":443575,"journal":{"name":"Construction Research and Innovation","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124113037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cheapest approach may be to turn cities into bunkers able to withstand the worst storm surge, but a new report from engineering consultancy Arcadis argues this can be counter-productive as it degrades the intrinsic value of a place, hurting investment and tourism. More sophisticated, “beautiful” solutions cost more, which is why the private sector should be drafted in to share the burden.","PeriodicalId":443575,"journal":{"name":"Construction Research and Innovation","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133135178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
