The Wearable 3 is a wrist-worn sensor node tailored for low maintenance residential health and behaviour monitoring. It features multiple inertial measurement sensors, as well as a heart-rate sensor, capacitive button, and OLED screen. The Wearable 3 builds on our expe-rience with previous generations of wearable sensing nodes while adding novel features, including interactive elements. We present a novel two-way communication based on a cus-tomized implementation of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol to connect the Wearable 3 with a gateway device, and describe various optimizations of energy consumption. The Wearable 3 is currently being deployed in residential homes in Bristol, UK, as part of a project aiming to collect diagnostic data from early-stage Alzheimer’s patients.","PeriodicalId":443547,"journal":{"name":"European Conference/Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129052121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we make use of and extend the X-Burst framework to enable communication between devices embedding a Wi-Fi, BLE, or IEEE 802.15.4 radio. X-Burst encodes data in the duration of energy bursts by transmitting legitimate frames with different payload length. Devices with incompatible physical layer, but operating on overlapping channels, can detect the energy bursts and decode information by sampling the received signal strength at a high frequency. As the transmission of frames with variable size and energy detection are features available in most off-the-shelf IoT devices, X-Burst is not technology-specific and allows to broadcast cross-technology frames to multiple devices using diverse technologies simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":443547,"journal":{"name":"European Conference/Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127621146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing real life deployments have clearly shown that smart lighting drastically decreases the energy consumption of cities. However, with the plethora of solutions existing on the market today, it is difficult to find the one that fits the specific needs of each community. Our system can asses the gains of using a smart lighting system, and can use the collected data to give specific recommendations for the solution that should be implemented. We present here the main challenges and problems that we encountered during the design of our prototype and system, and we discuss some lessons learned.","PeriodicalId":443547,"journal":{"name":"European Conference/Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133925692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most of times the whole data is sent, data compression can be used to decrease the amount of data and therefore the energy consumption. However, the compression is energy consuming and its efficiency depends on data size and data type. To tackle this challenge, the proposed Adaptive Near Sensor Compressing (ANSC) algorithm performs pertinent feature extraction on the sensed data, and selects the best compressor by estimating the energy required by the hardware platform to perform both data compression and transmission. The transmission power is also dynamically tuned to reach a specific quality of service according to node location and propagation channel. ANSC has been evaluated on a real platform dedicated to wireless body area network and has shown an energy gain of up to 49% compared to full transmission.","PeriodicalId":443547,"journal":{"name":"European Conference/Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134450757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although LoRa is one of the most representative LP-WAN technologies, only a few large-scale LoRa testbeds are publicly open to network researchers, which limits the ability to test the real-world performance of LoRa-based solutions. To enable a large-scale testing on real hardware, in this poster we present Chirpbox, a low-cost LoRa testbed solution. Chirpbox aims to evaluate the different LoRa protocols rather than to debug a system in detail. By only using the LoRa radio transceiver on each testbed node, Chirpbox is able to: (i) send back the evaluation results, (ii) schedule (i.e., start and stop) experiments, as well as (iii) disseminate a firmware under test without the need of additional infrastructure, such as local area networks. Each node in Chirpbox can get synchronized with a GPS module and is able to compute time-related statistics such as end-to-end latency on its own. Moreover, in order to easily deploy a LoRa network over a large area, a battery set is integrated in each Chirpbox node, as there is no need for energy-hungry observers. 1 Motivation LP-WANs are applied nowadays in many practical scenarios: from smart city and smart grid applications, to industrial monitoring and precise agriculture [3]. LoRa is one of the most representative technologies of LP-WANs. However, for network researchers, only a few open testbeds supporting LoRa are available to date. FIT-IoT [1] consists of 25 LoRa nodes within a 12 m × 12 m indoor room. In FlockLab [5], there are only three LoRa nodes observed. Dandelion [6] has 51 LoRa nodes, but they cannot be accessed publicly so far. Except for these testbeds, it is hard to find another open facility supporting LoRa over a large area, ideally outdoors and with more than 20 nodes for large-scale experiments. If nodes are deployed outdoors over a large area, in addition to the duty cycle limitations, a main technical challenge to test a LoRa system is the lack of infrastructure, i.e., a wired backbone that is commonly available in most indoor testbeds. Hence, it is hard for a tested LoRa-based system to send back the evaluation results without the availability of LAN/WLAN networks (C1); to disseminate a firmware under test (C2); to share a common time scale to compute timerelated statistics such as latency (C3); to schedule an experiment remotely (C4); and to ensure long-term availability, as a stable power supply can not be guaranteed (C5). Moreover, the cost of a testbed node should ideally be minimized (C6). Figure 1. A node in Chirpbox. To address these challenges, we propose Chirpbox, a low-cost LoRa testbed solution based on STM32 NUCLEOL476RG with a SX1276MB1MAS LoRa module (Fig. 1). Unlike existing testbeds [1, 5, 6], there is no explicit energyhungry observer for each node, which allows to address C5. Each node is equipped with four Li-ion rechargeable batteries (Nitecore NL1834). NB-IoT devices are expected to operate unattended, potentially in inaccessible and signal-challenged locations, for at least 10 years on a single battery charge, making the NB-IoT device energy consumption significantly important. Despite the importance of their function, the communication protocols have largely been copied from older generations of cellular networks to preserve interoperability, without considering their specific characteristics and needs. In this paper, we perform a detailed energy consumption analysis for NB-IoT devices, that we use as a basis to develop an energy consumption model for realistic energy consumption assessment. Finally, we take the insights from our analysis and propose optimizations to significantly reduce the energy consumption of NB-IoT devices in different traffic conditions. These optimizations are also complementary to current 3GPP optimizations towards the 10-year battery goal, and assess their performance.","PeriodicalId":443547,"journal":{"name":"European Conference/Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128387242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is used in many applications such as home automation, smart cities and smart agriculture. It provides low bitrate transmissions over long ranges, using unlicensed Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands. Being a relatively new, and proprietary modulation, there are still challenges and improvements to be addressed and discovered. In this article, we cover estimation, tracking, and correction of slow varying timing and frequency offsets. Both timing and frequency offsets can arise, in particular , when oscillators, found in radios, are either of poor quality, or aged. The latter scenario is a serious concern for IoT, where devices are envisioned to stay in operation during decades without maintenance. The proposed estimators are based on symbol-by-symbol processing of the output of the demodulator. Tracking and correction are then performed by including these estimators in a tracking loop. Simulations show that the proposed closed-loop system can efficiently and jointly track timing and frequency offsets, even at low SNR.","PeriodicalId":443547,"journal":{"name":"European Conference/Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121166738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
