We take a user-oriented approach based on an application-level delivery infrastructure consisting of and managed by (value-added) service providers. The service providers are mobility-aware and offer broadcasts in configurations that are optimized for wireless links and mobile hosts. In hotspots, mobile hosts may be able to simultaneously reach several localized service providers through different interfaces. Within this context, we present the design of a lightweight application-level protocol that enables mobile hosts to select a service provider from which they want to receive a broadcast. Mobile hosts use the protocol to begin receiving a broadcast and to remain connected to the same logical broadcast as they move across subnets. The protocol is independent of the actual stream control protocol (e.g., RTSP) that service providers might use. We show how our protocol can be realized with the existing protocols SIP and SDP. The realization uses SIP in combination with SDP's offer-answer model in a new way.","PeriodicalId":441921,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Mobile Applications and Services on WLAN Hotspots","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114871088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper addresses the challenges in concurrently providing a wide range of end-to-end throughput and delay assurances in such mobile multihop WLAN hotspots. The proposed solution is based on the Neighborhood Proportional Delay Differentiation (NPDD) service model. With NPDD, Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) based applications achieve their desired throughputs using a dynamic class selection mechanism. This approach integrates well with the NPDD-based end-to-end delay assurance mechanism proposed earlier. The integrated throughput and delay assurance mechanisms are evaluated with simulations. To better model the node mobility in a multihop hotspot, the Public Hotspot Mobility (PHM) model is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed solution is better in meeting the desired throughputs and delays as compared with best effort and strict priority approaches.","PeriodicalId":441921,"journal":{"name":"Wireless Mobile Applications and Services on WLAN Hotspots","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-09-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126746882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
