One of the first student course engagement activities is registration. This study aims to determine if registration timing correlates with student success in an online STEM course.\u0000\u0000Background.\u0000Student success is based on achieving course learning outcomes. Students who register very late may have a lower probability of successfully passing challenging courses, adversely impacting student retention. Earlier instructor intervention with at-risk students may improve student academic achievement.\u0000\u0000Methodology.\u0000This study analyzed historical data of 193 student numerical course scores and registration timings for a recently updated introductory management information systems and data analysis course at a university in the south-east United States. The course was delivered online over nine-week periods, by two different instructors, over two calendar years comprising one academic year. The response variable, overall course score, was evaluated based on the student’s course registration timing relative to the course start date.\u0000\u0000Contribution.\u0000We examined the relationship between registration timing relative to course start date and academic performance as measured by overall course score and letter grade. At a statistically significant level, we found that students who registered very late earned, on average, one letter grade lower than students that registered earlier in the registration window.\u0000\u0000Findings.\u0000The analysis reveals that registration timing correlates to course scores. Also, 45% of students that registered after the course start date failed the course, and the overall course scores of late registrants were lower, indicating that very late registration may identify at-risk students.\u0000\u0000Recommendations for Practitioners.\u0000For students, carefully consider the decision to register for a STEM course late and understand why you delayed registering. Can you purchase the text and access codes to catch up on the first week’s assignments? Will you have the time to work harder in the first few weeks of the course to catch up? For instructors, be aware that students that register late for a course are at risk of not doing well and intervene if you observe the student falling behind the rest of the class or not engaging with the course. Administrators should carefully consider policies allowing late registration for STEM courses and its effects on student success and retention. What might seem like a promising idea in the short term (allowing a student to register late) may have deleterious long-term effects on student success and retention.\u0000\u0000Recommendation for Researchers.\u0000Researchers may consider the relationship between course registration timing and learning outcomes. The exercises are developed after providing cognitive analysis of the factors that make aligning these key sections challenging to many, and after discussing pedagogical tools that can be used to address these challenges.\u0000\u0000Background.\u0000Writing doctoral dissertations is a formidable endeavor for numerous students. Among the myriad challenges that are faced is the issue of aligning key sections of the dissertation document. Students often struggle with conceptualizing the alignment among different sections of the various chapters of their dissertation. In this study, we introduce here an instrument that includes a set of exercises to help address the challenges of alignment in chapter one, before the issues spiral and addressing them becomes complicated.\u0000\u0000Completion of Methodology.\u0000This paper reviews literature that discusses the underlying challenges that face the writing of doctoral dissertations in general and the alignment of the key sections in particular. It analyzes the cognitive factors that contribute to the challenges and examines the pedagogical tools that can be used to address these challenges. The review of the literature, the analysis of the cognitive, and the examination of pedagogical tools lead to the introduction of an instrument that is designed to help address the challenges of aligning the key sections of doctoral dissertations. \u0000\u0000Contribution.\u0000This paper presents an instrument with a set of exercises that are intended to help students align key sections of their doctoral dissertation document. This alignment step is crucial to the successful completion of dissertation documents and is best tackled early in the writing. Delaying alignment or worse, ignoring alignment altogether, can complicate the issue and lead to numerous extra steps and delays. Our developed instrument here can be used to tackle this issue of alignment from the beginning and throughout the writing and completion status of dissertation documents.\u0000\u0000Findings.\u0000Students are often faced with challenges when aligning the key sections of a doctoral dissertation. They struggle with conceptualizing the alignment process. They often write each section separately, and independently of other sections of a chapter and a dissertation. However, sections of the dissertation document are interrelated, and each section affects the writing of other sections. For the successful completion of the dissertation, the sections need to be aligned, and it would be best if these issues are tackled from the beginning of the writing and throughout the writing of the dissertation.\u0000\u0000Recommendations for Practitioners.\u0000A methodological approach to aligning the sections of a doctoral dissertation is crucial for the resulting treatise to be coherent and present a unified purpose that threads through each c

Unfortunately, the hot and dry climate of SE Colorado combines with the ever-expanding wildland-urban interface (WUI), presenting an enormous grassland fire risk. A review of the literature revealed a deficit of research that addressed the alerting mechanism between remote WSN-based fire detection and response forces. \u0000\u0000Methodology: The present research pursued a converged-network solution from two courses of action (COA) to address the wildfire risk. COA-A and COA-B coupled the ZigBee-Pro and ZigBee-IP WSN protocols, respectively, with the 4G-LTE infrastructure prevalent throughout SE Colorado to bolster alert information availability. Following construction of the simulation models, the Ostinato packet generator performed 194 end-to-end transmissions with each COA to ascertain the better-performing solution in terms of network transmission delay. \u0000\u0000Contribution: The study’s findings offer a starting point for subsequent research that will lead to a proposal for SE Coloradans – and beyond – to help bridge the gap between detective WSNs and the response forces that can subdue remote grassfires. To the extent the authors could surmise, the current research effort was the first to model and simulate a one-way, UDP-based wireless network that comprised a WSN node, two WSN-Cellular gateway designs, and several 4G-LTE infrastructure components. The simulated environment also measured and compared the end-to-end network transmission delay for two unique solutions, including the convergence process within the WSN-Cellular gateway. \u0000\u0000Findings: COA-B proved the superior solution with a 16.2% delay improvement over COA-A. An independent-samples t-test confirmed the statistical significance between the results’ means.\u0000\u0000Recommendations for Practitioners: COA-B offered a remote SE Colorado grassfire alerting solution that minimized network transmission delay and maximized alert payload to responding firefighters. However, the generalizability of the current research’s results indicates utility for firefighters providing overwatch to grasslands throughout the world – wherever valuable grasslands intersect with a 4G-LTE on-ramp. Within the United States and outside SE Colorado, 4G-LTE from multiple carriers exists throughout the Great Plains. U.S. industries, communities, and ecosystems that rely on the abundance of Great Plains grasslands abound and feature use cases ripe for benefit from the present research. \u0000\u0000Recommendations for Researchers: Additional studies could offer more depth and recommend solutions to bolsters the alert mechanism be

Due to increased anxiety levels because of uncertainties, the paper provides a reflection of doctoral experiences from two students – one in Russia at the data collection stage, and one in China (enrolled in New Zealand) at the proposal stage.\u0000\u0000Methodology \u0000Through collaborative autoethnography and joint-reflection, we analyze our experiences as doctoral students focusing on methodological adjustments, ethical dilemmas, adaptation strategies and supervisor-supervisee relationships. Conducting a collaborative autoethnography provides a richer analysis of the interplay between perspectives, compared to a traditional autoethnography. Collaborative autoethnography also provides conditions for a collective exploration of subjectivities of doctoral students through an iterative process. After providing separate individual accounts, we discussed our experiences, analyzed them, and engaged in a joint-reflection from our consensual interpretations.\u0000\u0000Contribution \u0000Our work aims to contribute to existing discussions on how COVID-19 impacted on doctoral students’ coping strategies during the pandemic. The paper encourages doctoral students to further discuss how they navigate their doctoral experiences through auto-ethnography and joint-reflections.\u0000\u0000Findings \u0000Three main themes transpired in our analysis. First, we encountered roadblocks such as interruptions, frustrations and resistance to adapt our doctoral studies in the pandemic context, which align with the recent literature regarding education during the coronavirus pandemic. Second, we faced a diversity of burdens and privileges in the pandemic, which provided us with both pleasant (opportunity to create change) and unpleasant (unknown threats) situations, thereby enabling us to construct and reconstruct our stories through reflection. Third, we experienced a shared unfamiliarity of doing doctoral studies during the pandemic, to which the role of the academic community including our supervisors and doctoral colleagues contributed to how we managed our circumstances. \u0000\u0000Recommendations for Practitioners \u0000We speak to our fellow doctoral students to dare navigate their doctoral experiences through collaborative reflections. In practice, by reflecting on our experience, we recommend that new doctoral students remain flexible and mindful of their doctoral journeys and recognize their agency to deal with the unexpected. The aim is to demonstrate that a cross-convolutional neural network can be implemented within the home laboratory – an exploration of a virtual connection for re-search. An analysis of the works provides the basis for future extensibility of the software application for ImageJ2.\u0000\u0000Background: The study was guided by the research question: What strategies do enterprise information systems specialists need to integrate novel algorithms into an imaging application? This study demonstrates how to bring a lab-tested application online within a home laboratory to further build upon those findings.\u0000\u0000Methodology: A conceptual analysis was utilized for the artifact’s creation within the umbrella of design science to aid in the data interpretation segment. A conceptual framework was developed to determine relevant subject matter, such as useful software applications and technological enhancements to an image application. A research sample was not used in this study.\u0000\u0000Contribution: This research contributed to the body of knowledge by using a cross-convolutional neural network to explore novel algorithms as an enterprise information system specialist and set up the imaging application called Im-ageJ2 for development. This paper’s purpose is to reduce length of stay (LOS) for patients presenting to the ED with headaches.\u0000\u0000Background.\u0000The increasing number of patients admitted to emergency departments challenges administrators to find ways to reduce the length of stay in the ED. The purpose of this paper is to quantify the potential reduction in LOS by modifying patient flow in the ED, for patients presenting with non-traumatic headache who require a non-contrast head computerized tomography (CT). \u0000\u0000Methodology.\u0000A 41-month retrospective review was performed for all patients presenting to the Sheba ED with non-traumatic headache as the chief complaint and that were referred to CT during their visit. We distinguished between patients that had undergone the standard patient flow of first seeing a physician and only then referred to CT and patients that were sent to CT directly from the triage station, which is run by a triage nurse. For the former group, we identified their main patient flow epochs: arrival, triage nurse, physician referral to CT, performing CT, discharge.\u0000\u0000Contribution.\u0000The contribution is two-fold. First, a practical recommendation for changes in patient workflow to reduce LOS. Second, it demonstrates how medical records can be used to analyze “what-if” scenarios on patient flow.\u0000Findings During the period under review, there were 5501 headache patients out of a total of 196681 walk-in ED visits, a ratio of 2.79% (95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 2.72%-2.86%). Of the headache patients, 2961 patients were referred to CT and their LOS was 394 minutes (95% CI: 387-401). Modifying the standard patient flow so that patients are sent from triage immediately to CT will potentially reduce 121 minutes (95% CI: 118-124) from their LOS. These potential savings are concentrated mainly in the p.m. hours.\u0000\u0000Recommendations for Practitioners.\u0000The potential LOS reduction can be achieved by modifying current patient flow for patients presenting to the ED with non-traumatic headache.
