From these wind vector fields it is possible to compute the corresponding pressure fields on the sea surface. The procedure that computes the pressure fields proposed here is based on a simplified version of the Navier-Stokes equations. The knowledge of the pressure fields on the sea surface is of great relevance in weather prediction models.","PeriodicalId":441591,"journal":{"name":"[Proceedings] IGARSS '92 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121997501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First-order surface scattering models predict that the copolarization ratio is sensitive to soil moisture but not to surface roughness. All possible ratios of the co-polarization signals and their linear combinations are evaluated. The best sensitivity to soil moisture is achieved from measurements as predicted by the first-order surface scattering model. The effects of system noise and volume scattering of soil are evaluated. To minimize the effect of the volume scattering, an algorithm which includes both the surface and volume scattering has been developed and tested using Jet Propulsion Laboratory Airborne SAR (JPL AIRSAR) data. The results show that the estimation of soil moisture can be improved after removing the system noise and including the volume scattering effect at large incidence angles.","PeriodicalId":441591,"journal":{"name":"[Proceedings] IGARSS '92 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium","volume":"11 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126139303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The information gain is computed by computing the information content before and after the measurements. A stochastic diurnal model for the SW flux is developed, and measurements for different orbital parameters are examined. The methodology is applied to specific NASA Polar platform and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) orbital parameters. The information theory approach, coupled with the developed SW diurnal model, is found to be promising for measurements involving nonuniform orbital sampling characteristics.","PeriodicalId":441591,"journal":{"name":"[Proceedings] IGARSS '92 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124776592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system illuminates a sample with linearly-polarized laser light of wavelength h=632.8 nm, and is capable of synchronously detecting both the likeand crosspolarized scattered intensities at discrete angles spanning half a hemisphere. The measured scattering coefficient and bidirectional reflectance factor for both like and cross polarizations are shown for several particulate samples in the backscattering and forwardscattering directions. In particular, samples of uncoated quartz (translucent) and pyrolusite-coated quartz (opaque) exhibited high and low, respectively, levels of cross polarization. Results indicate that polarization information in the plane of incident is useful for inferring characteristics regarding the surface and volume of a target. A high level of cross polarization, for example, indicates that significant multiple scattering is occurring; this is due primarily to the volume of the target since surface depolarization effects are minimal in the plane of incidence.","PeriodicalId":441591,"journal":{"name":"[Proceedings] IGARSS '92 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129905419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A geophysical calibration and validation of the Active Microwave Instrument (AMI) aboard the ERS-1 was performed in the Norwegian Sea in the period from September 15 to December 10, 1991. A total of 46 underflights of the ERS-1 satellite were performed with the Rotating Antenna C-band Scatterometer (RACS) of the University of Hamburg. The instrument was operated aboard a Donier Do-228 aircraft of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) in order to measure the normalized radar cross section (NRCS) of the ocean surface from which the wind speed U1oneutral was infered. Wind measurements were also performed by wind sensors on 10 buoys, 3 research vessels and 2 aircrafts. A good agreement was found between most of the wind measurements. The data set obtained during this experiment is being used for tuning the prelaunch wind retrieval algorithm for the ERS-1 scatterometer.","PeriodicalId":441591,"journal":{"name":"[Proceedings] IGARSS '92 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium","volume":"290 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127544933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) data and SPOT data acquired over central Sumatra are used in a supervised classification of vegetation. Emphasis is put on SAR data utilization. Assessment of SAR data potentialities is carried out by using (1) SIR-B imagery alone, and (2) combined SJR-B and SPOT data. The article describes the methodology developed for exploiting the SIR-B image including raw data analysis, image filtering and image classification. Finally, combined filtered SIR-B imagery and SPOT data are used jointly in a supervised classification leading to a better discrimination of surface units. These results indicate the unique capabilities of combined visible and SAR data for monitoring tropical vegetation, especially for forest/non-forest discrimination.","PeriodicalId":441591,"journal":{"name":"[Proceedings] IGARSS '92 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129106584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
