The employed computer hard- and software is heterogeneous and complies to different standards, interfaces and protocols for interoperation. Grid middleware systems like UNICORE 6 try to hide some of the complexity of the underlying systems by offering high-level, uniform interfaces for executing computational jobs or storing, moving, and searching through data. Via UNICORE 6 computer resources can be accessed securely with different software clients, e.g. the UNICORE Command line Client (UCC) or the graphical UNICORE Rich Client (URC) which is based on Eclipse. In this paper, we describe the design and features of the URC, and highlight its role as a flexible and extensible Grid client framework using the QSAR field as an example.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116140615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Acoustic sensors provide the ability to collect data passively, objectively and continuously across large areas for extended periods of time. While these factors make acoustic sensors attractive as autonomous data collectors, there are significant issues associated with large-scale data manipulation and analysis. We present our current research into techniques for analysing large volumes of acoustic data effectively and efficiently. We provide an overview of a novel online acoustic environmental workbench and discuss a number of approaches to scaling analysis of acoustic data, collaboration, manual, automatic and human-in-the loop analysis.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"16 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125831303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Detailed metadata captured during scientific investigation not only enables the efficient discovery of relevant data sets but also is a source for exploring ongoing activity. In XMC Cat metadata catalog, an XML catalog that uses a novel hybrid model to store XML to a relational database, we exploit differences in the temporal utility between browse and search metadata to selectively relax the consistency model used. By ensuring only eventual consistency on parts of the solution, we determine through experimental analysis that the performance and scalability of the catalog can be substantially improved.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133001947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead, a Short Lived Credential Service provides the necessary user certificates, while Grisu libraries, developed by the Australian Research Collaboration Service, handle Grid-related tasks such as job submission and remote file operations. Thus portal developers can focus on modeling domain-specific workflows and create high-level and easy to use interfaces for scientists who want to run and monitor large simulations. This paper explains the components and demonstrates how we use the system in two submission portals for separate applications.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133608194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examples include maps of rock types, computer models and simulations. These files may contain unpublished, confidential or commercially sensitive data. AARNet’s CloudStor, which has received input from the Australian geoscience research community during its development, is a new online file sharing service combining several transport, storage and security methods, to allow Australian researchers to quickly and easily share files of any size for a limited period of time in a trusted environment. Researchers at supported institutions can logon to CloudStor using their institutional credentials and upload a file to share with any collaborator, or issue a voucher for any collaborator to share a file with them. This paper discusses observations on the relevance of CloudStor to the Australian geoscience research community.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133472342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tool enables users to define a CBRN threat scenario to be simulated, which includes the geographical area of concern specified through a map, the simulated threat sources and their placement, and the configuration of sensors. Users can define multiple searchers who act as clients that interact with a central server and search for the simulated radiological source or sources. Based on the simulated measurements received from the searchers, and a chosen source backtracking algorithm, the central server updates the source estimates and issues control vectors to guide each searcher.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132985157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe a blueprint for a centralized data repository and processing system, which leverages national cyber infrastructure. Included is a brief discussion of the current paradigm in astronomical image processing. The upcoming One Degree Imager (ODI) instrument, to be installed at the Wisconsin, Indiana, Yale and NOAO (WIYN) observatory in 2011, is examined as an ideal use case. Details on the major components and a detailed workflow in the case of data processing for the ODI instrument are highlighted.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125697649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However those interfaces are all different and make it difficult for any user willing to discover, search, access and use this data in an easy and standardised manner. Those needs are particularly evident in the recent field of geothermal exploration in Australia where no such workflow is currently available. This paper presents the Western Australian Geothermal Centre of Excellence (WAGCoE) data catalogue, an application of recent geo-referenced web service technologies to address the challenges of locating, querying, and accessing data in standard formats for geothermal exploration. Practical uses of this catalogue for knowledge sharing and decision making within WAGCoE and the geothermal industry are also presented.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129531928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system includes: linked data implementations of a signal repository, collection builder, and results explorer, an extension to the my Experiment workflow sharing environment to include Meandre workflows, and support within my Experiment and Meandre to retrieve and persist resources from the linked data repositories. E-Science applications that need on-demand execution benefit from Clouds, because no permanent computing resources to support peak demand has to be acquired. In this paper, we present AMOS, a system that automates creation and management of temporary Grids on a Cloud to execute (parts of) application workflows. We performed experiments with AMOS and a representative e-Science application on a research Grid and on the Amazon EC2 Cloud. The results show that AMOS is a viable approach to manage and execute e-Science applications in a flexible Grid environment and to explore novel mechanisms that allow optimal utilization of Cloud resources. Furthermore, we consider AMOS as a step towards an operating system for (virtual) infrastructures that enables Grid applications to control their computational resources at run-time.","PeriodicalId":441488,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Sixth International Conference on e-Science","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126725101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
