After the pioneering works of Ref. [1] and [2] where the proper set of Maxwell-Bloch equations has been derived and integrated numerically, interesting dynamical effects ranging from the coexistence of conservative and dissipative behaviours [3] to the existence of codimension two bifurcations (CTB) [4] have been analysed. In Ref. [4], for example, a CTB was recognised to be responsible of the appearance of frequency pushed solutions which are counter-intuitive in a problem majorly related to locking phenomena. Recently, partial attempts of characterizing the degenerate nature of the CTB have been published [5]. However a complete unfolding of the CTB capable of showing analytically all the dynamical behaviours of the solutions is presently lacking.","PeriodicalId":441335,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Dynamics in Optical Systems","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133011957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, by introducing other nonlinear processes of mode coupling in addition to the laser medium saturation one gets a deeper insight into the nature of the multimode laser instability. There was a successful attempt in ref. [2] to take into account the influence of mode coupling on laser action via stimulated Brillouin scattering. However, it should be natural to seek for the reason of the nonlinear mode coupling in the laser medium itself. In the next high-order approximation of the dynamical theory of laser with adiabatically eliminated polarization, the combination mode-mode coupling (CMMC) due to the mode- induced inversion oscillations is taken into account [3-5].","PeriodicalId":441335,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Dynamics in Optical Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128236427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A linear stability analysis performed on the gaussian iterative model predicts deterministic instabilities. Experiments made with a Nd:YAG laser have revealed the appearance of periodic instabilities as the modulation frequency is detuned from optimum. We show that for a thin layer it is important to take into account the difference between the external macroscopic field and the field acting on the individual atoms within the medium. The local field correction leads to an inversion dependent resonant frequency. In thin layers this generates a new mechanism of nonlinear transparency induced by the dynamical frequency shift. When the excitation frequency is larger than the original resonant frequency, then the transmission of the layer exhibits bistable behavior.","PeriodicalId":441335,"journal":{"name":"Nonlinear Dynamics in Optical Systems","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134603191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
