Common scenarios of future mobile telecommunications often involve multiple devices with varied characteristics and rich and diverse multimedia applications delivered over heterogeneous wireless environments. Most users, however, cannot be expected to appreciate these technologies or participate in its configuration. To address this issue, a user-centric system is proposed that aims to hide complexity from the user. Incorporating concepts of the personal distributed environment, the proposed system uses a personal assistant agent to interact with, and react to, the environment and a personal content manager to be aware of content types, device capabilities and manage a user's digital content on behalf of the user","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123971817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce a classification of mobility models based on their dynamic properties, and characterize the M2 (marks-memory less) class. Statistical tools are combined with numerical simulations to show that some of the most used mobility models in the literature fall within the M2 class. A mathematical framework is provided for evaluating the performance of opportunistic forwarding schemes in the presence of M2 mobility, and it is shown that the finiteness of the mean time necessary to deliver a message depends only on the mobility characteristics and not on the relaying protocol specification","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123680817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose LAAC, a novel location-aware access control protocol based on a coarsely defined location area that is enclosed by overlapping areas of multiple access points. Accordingly, a location key for location claim is derived from the overlapping access points' beacon information. In addition, the fact that a mobile device derives the location key enables us to track the location of the mobile device. LAAC does not require additional hardwares such as GPS or ultrasonic devices in order to localize the mobile devices. We enumerate possible attacks to the system and analyze their countermeasures. The computational and communicational costs and the memory requirement are evaluated, and the simulation results are presented","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132298552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Base stations (BS) have some back up power and it is not suppose to fail due to shortage of battery power. The nodes which are away from the base station communicate to it via the nodes which are in proximity of BS. So, the nodes which are nearer to BS have additional communication responsibilities of forwarding data of distant nodes. Thus the nodes which are in proximity of BS will run out of battery power very soon and create bottleneck for communication. In this paper we have proposed that if the density of sensor nodes increases as we move towards base station this effect can be minimized. We found the required exact density of the sensor nodes at a particular distance from BS to avoid bottleneck phenomenon around it. We have considered the real life scenario where the nodes generate data only when there is an event of interest with a given probability of occurrence. The main contribution of this paper with our proposed strategy is lifetime offered per unit cost of deployment is almost double","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134346353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People utilize Internet services more and more to communicate with each other, e.g., via VoIP or chat. The next step would be to reutilize the same applications to achieve ubiquitous communication, anytime and anywhere, also where network support is not available, such as in ad-hoc networks. Existing Internet protocols must be modified for working in the ad-hoc server-less environment. The session initiation protocol (SIP) is a fundamental element in the Internet for establishing multimedia communication sessions. However, SIP cannot be used in ad-hoc networks, as it relies on the support of SIP servers in the network; e.g, in ad-hoc networks it is not possible to locate SIP users since the assistance of a dedicated SIP server is missing. A solution for this problem is presented in this paper which describes and evaluates a fully decentralized mechanism for locating SIP users in ad-hoc networks","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115305344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the networking technology is refined in many ways, the need for system modulation with effective performance becomes essential. A multitude of architectures, which includes system abstraction and layering, has been proposed to solve the need at the operating system level. However, previous efforts do not qualify for networking architecture required by sensor networking, since they are aimed at hardware abstraction or protocol-based layering. In this paper, we classify developers into kernel, network and application developers and propose a network architecture that enables those developers to program independently. Network stack is separated into three different layers; MLL, NSL, DNL. This three-layered architecture provides an effective programming environment to sensor network developers by minimizing modification of other layers and maximizing reusability of the networking module. To validate the proposed mechanism, we implemented and assessed the performance with a few network algorithms and applications, based on the RETOS, which supports a dynamic loadable kernel module","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130113479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The connection-oriented nature of Bluetooth raises the issues of effective multi-hop network (scatternet) formation and maintenance that network and routing layer must address on top of the TinyOS abstractions. The hop distance and wireless link quality pose major challenges to multi-hop network performance, especially the connection-oriented networks such as Bluetooth scatternet. In this paper, we present a metric-based scatternet formation algorithm for the Intel Mote, which can optimize the Bluetooth network formation from the hop distance and link quality perspectives. In addition, a smart repair mechanism is proposed to deal with link/node failure and recover the network connectivity promptly with low overhead. The experiments with the Intel Mote platform demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimizations, which make the platform more powerful","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134334923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All current in-network data-centric storage (IN-DCS) schemes fail to deal with query hot-spots resulting from skewed query loads as well as skewed sensor deployments. In this paper, we present two algorithms to locally detect and decompose query hot-spots, namely zone partitioning (ZP) and zone partial replication (ZPR). We build both algorithms on top of the DIM scheme, which has been shown to exhibit the best performance among all INDCS schemes. Experimental evaluation illustrates the efficiency of ZP/ZPR in decomposing query hot-spots while increasing QoD as well as energy savings by balancing energy consumption among sensor nodes","PeriodicalId":440604,"journal":{"name":"2006 Third Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Networking & Services","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133771427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this endeavor to become successful it is essential that useful and usable services are developed to ensure acceptance of the new PN paradigm. This paper discusses the importance of involving end-users in the development process and presents a concrete approach to do this. A case study is made on the development and evaluation of a prototype service for monitoring and managing diabetes.
