Particular attention is paid to developments in modelling railway bridge loading and dynamic vehicle-span (structure) interaction. The most important aspects determining the advancements in this area of knowledge are identified. The contemporary techniques for defining bridge span finite element models used in dynamic analyses are also discussed. The second, practical part of the paper presents the results of numerical simulations of the passage of load along the bridge structure. The railway loads are represented by a series of concentrated forces and a series of single-mass oscillators. Vibration of the bridge span centre and the vehicle mass depending on the speed of travel are considered. The loading parameters are adopted to represent a real railway vehicle - EN57 electrical multiple unit. The structure’s parameters were adopted on the basis of a 30 m long load-relieving span. In both cases modal identification techniques were used to obtain all the required dynamic parameters of the span under analysis on the basis of experimental data.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"28 1","pages":"299-316"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73214904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test, which is a new bitumen performance grading test developed in the USA, and was used to assess the fatigue life of the bitumens. Highly modified bitumen 45/80-80 showed 10-20 times higher fatigue durability than neat bitumen 50/70 and modified bitumen PMB 45/80-55. The differences in fatigue durability between neat bitumen 50/70 and modified bitumen PMB 45/80-55 were much smaller, which means that the bitumens are characterized by similar fatigue reliability. Also the effect of different test temperatures on the fatigue life and mode of failure of the bitumen binders were examined. It has been shown that the quality of a bitumen can be more accurately assessed on the basis of results of the durability test carried out for several different temperatures than for one equivalent temperature.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"40 1","pages":"317-336"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86440522","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After discussing the bridge structure details, the optimum length of the module of the bridge overcrossing is determined and then calculation of the orthotropic plate of the bridge carriageway and its supporting structure are presented. In the calculations elements of the mathematical analysis, method of finite elements FEM and method of finite differences FDM as well as analytical displacement method were applied. Reliability of results is confirmed by coincidence of deflections obtained by both, FEM and FDM, methods. The solution matrix of the FDM obtained in this work allows to calculate any plate with wide variety of its geometrical dimensions, and also for different parameters of the plate and reinforcing elements flexural stiffnesses. The analysis of the bridge overcrossing spatial frame is performed by precise method of displacement taking into account the bending and torsion of its elements.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"22 1","pages":"215-226"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72980754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nano-particles of CaCO 3 were partially added to RCCP, and the mechanical properties of the specimens were measured. The results indicate that nano-CaCO 3 can improve the compressive strength and the tensile splitting strength of RCCP. The nano-CaCO 3 used up to 1% as a partial replacement for cement can accelerate the C-S-H gel formation at the early ages of hydration. This is due to increased crystalline Ca(OH) 2 amount during the early ages of hydration. Increasing nano-CaCO 3 content by more than 1% decreases the compressive and tensile splitting strength, and increases water absorption and permeability. The addition of CaCO 3 nano-particles may increase C-S-H content, which improves the mechanical properties of concrete, fills the concrete pores, and decreases water absorption and permeable voids volume.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"54 1","pages":"205-214"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82166617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the paper was to answer the question whether weather conditions and what values of atmospheric parameters have an impact on the increase of the risk level regarding the occurrence of a road incident. The analyses were carried out using the road network in Elbląg as an example. There were based on detailed information regarding road incidents occurrence covering two years, and also atmospheric conditions that were made available. The work undoubtedly demonstrates that atmospheric conditions have an impact on considered risk. Moreover, the increase of this risk is highly influenced by atmospheric parameters such as humidity and air temperature.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"59 2 1","pages":"193-204"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89753880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of the mechanical parameters applied in the respective criteria on the obtained fatigue resistances is analysed with their different nature underscored. Most of the fatigue criteria define the fatigue life through parameters which are related to it only indirectly (such as the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strain, etc.) instead of using the results of fatigue tests. The results obtained with different criteria are compared and correlated with the results obtained with the methodology used in preparation of “The Catalogue of Typical Flexible and Semi-rigid Pavements”, a Polish pavement design guide published in 2014. It is demonstrated that the differences between predictions generated with the different empirical fatigue models are noticeably greater in the case of lower traffic classes (service levels), converging for higher traffic classes.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"274 1","pages":"227-248"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82269317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The actual road/airport pavement consisting of several different layers resting on a sub-grade is modelled by a layer with dynamically and thermally equivalent physico-mechanical parameters. Using mass, wave, energy and thermodynamic criteria, equivalent models of the pavement in the homogenized system and in the multilayer system are presented. The modelling was conducted to obtain equivalence between the dynamic and thermal wave processes taking place in the multilayer system and in the homogenized system. The problem solution was constructed for a layer interacting with a half-space, modelling a layered pavement resting on a sub-grade (a half-space). The actual pavement was mathematically and physically modelled by the equivalent layer, taking into account the mechanical and thermal processes taking place in the latter. The presented solution enables one to carry out analyses of the universal problem of a layer resting on a sub-grade and to evaluate complex problems relating to the thermo-mechanics and condition testing of layered road and airport pavements.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"1 1","pages":"141-157"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90178898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been demonstrated that standard performance tests give the same classification rating to bitumens that have considerably different rheological properties. In such situations it is indispensable to test visco-elastic properties (complex shear modulus test) and visco-elastic-plastic properties (using tests with repeated stress pulse, such as MSCR). Additionally, a test used for indirect determination of so-called distinct phase transitions was carried out as part of this research. Although phase transitions are not distinct in the case of bitumen binders, the temperature corresponding to the maximum value of the imaginary part of the complex stiffness modulus can be treated as an important parameter from the point of view of thermodynamics and rheology. The benefits of modification of binders by addition of natural asphalts are clearly evident in the standard binder/aggregate bond strength test. Conversely, the respective non-standard tests failed to demonstrate the advantages of paving-grade bitumens modified with natural asphalt until MSCR and phase transition tests were carried out to this effect.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"7 1","pages":"93-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74717547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simplified method is presented which, in the authors' opinion, combines reliability with relative simplicity and with a small input of labour needed, which factors make it suitable for use in very early stages of the process of engineering. The proposed method assesses the usefulness of the road, safety of traffic and its environmental impact. The measure of usefulness of the planned route is congestion relief on the existing road network and shortening the time of travel in relation to the zero option (without investment). The traffic safety analysis considers the effect of the route geometry and location of interchanges (in the case of expressways and motorways) on the probability of road incidents. The environmental impacts of the project considered in this research include its effect on the vehicle exhaust emissions and the associated clearing of forests and habitat fragmentation. The assessment was carried out by scoring. The above-mentioned criteria were combined in the final assessment by the objective function, taking into account the routing effectiveness and the estimated cost of the investment. The application of the method is presented on the basis of different options of linking expressway S3 with the A4 motorway in the Wroclaw-Bolkow corridor.","PeriodicalId":44000,"journal":{"name":"Roads and Bridges-Drogi i Mosty","volume":"380 1","pages":"159-176"},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2018-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76420896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
