Material(s) and Method(s): Patients aged 18-50 years who had been diagnosed with coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), the disease caused by the SARS-CoV2 virus, were enrolled in a prospective, case-control, multi-center study. Genetic alterations and messenger RNA (m-RNA) expression levels of the TLR7, TLR8, ACE2, CD40L, CXCR3, and TASL genes were determined using DNA sequencing analysis, and gene expression was determined using quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction testing. PolyPhen-2 (Polymorphism Phenotyping v2;Adzhubei et al., 2010) and SNAP2 (Rostlab, Munich, Germany) genetic analysis tools were used to define the pathogenic effects of detected mutations by sequencing the selected genes in hotspot regions. Result(s): The study group consisted of 80 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 and was divided into groups based on sex and MAS status. Twenty-nine mutations were detected in 6 genes. Among the alterations, 15 were identified in this study for the first time and 9 were pathogenic. Pathogenic missense mutations in the TLR7, TLR8, ACE2, and TASL genes were detected in the MAS (+) group. In males, decreased TLR7, TLR8, and CXCR3 expression was statistically significant in the MAS (+) group (p<0.050). CXCR3 expression was lower in the female and male MAS (+) groups compared with the MAS (-) groups (p<0.050). Conclusion(s): In the absence of major risk factors for COVID-19, the TLR7/8, ACE2, and CXCR3 variants and decreased m-RNA expression levels associated with genetic susceptibility may be independent prognostic risk factors for COVID-19. Materials and Methods: A total of 255 participants (mean age 40.8±13.2 years) diagnosed with chronic musculoskeletal pain were included in the study. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and a form created by the researchers were used to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and methods of pain management. Results: The primary site of symptoms during the previous 12-month period was the low back, neck, and upper back regions (69%, 64.7%, and 60% respectively). The detailed assessment revealed that in the prior 7 days, patients experienced symptoms most often in the lower back (56.9%), upper back (45.1%), and neck (43.9%). The most frequently used methods of pain self-care were massage (71%), pain relief medication (68.2%), and topical analgesics (55.3%). Conclusion: Patients most often reported symptoms in the spinal area, and the most used means of self-care for pain management were massaging the painful area, pain medication, and topical analgesics. Self-care initiatives can be very valuable, however, at least some initial guidance from health professionals is advisable. Additional exploration of technological means of intervention and awareness of appropriate self-care could be of substantial benefit individuals and society.","PeriodicalId":43995,"journal":{"name":"Erciyes Medical Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74196236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Information and distraction are significant methods in reducing pain and anxiety in children. We aimed to evaluate the effects of giving information and an active distraction method for pediatric venipuncture -related pain and anxiety in 3-8 years old children. Children were randomized into three groups as the control, the informed, the informed and distracted. Fear and pain experience were found to be significantly lower in the informed and distracted group rather than the control and the informed group according to the parents/caregivers. Fear and pain experience were similarly found to be significantly lower in the informed and distracted group than the other groups according to the independent observer. Informing, preparing, coping, distracting methods should be used before, during, and after the invasive procedures to reduce children's pain and anxiety.","PeriodicalId":43995,"journal":{"name":"Erciyes Medical Journal","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-07-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82448503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we aimed to investigate whether COVID-19 affects the ventricular repolarization parameters. Materials and Methods: In this study, 152 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were included retrospectively. Age and sex-matched 151 healthy subjects were assigned as the control group. QT, QTc, Tpe, Tpe/QT, and Tpe/QTc values of all participants were determined and compared between both groups. The relationship between high sensitive-troponin I (hsTnI) and the parameters mentioned was analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Results: Mean age, male gender and comorbidity rates were similar in both groups (p>0.05 for each). Heart rate, QTc, Tpe, Tpe/QT, and Tpe/QTc values were higher in the study group (p<0.001 for each). However, QT and QRS values were comparable in both groups (p>0.05 for each). There were positive correlations between hsTnI and QT (rho=0.218, p=0.008), QTc (rho=0.308, p<0.001), Tpe (rho=0.646, p<0.001), Tpe/QT (rho=0.571, p<0.001), and Tpe/QTc (rho=0.608, p<0.001). Conclusion: In patients with COVID-19, QTc, Tpe, Tpe/QT, and Tpe/QTc values are higher than the control group and these parameters correlate positively with hsTnI. Therefore, ECG follow-up may be beneficial in preventing arrhythmic events, especially in patients with acute cardiac injuries.
