Hundreds of skaters are hanging out at the bottom of the Montparnasse tower, waiting for the start of the Friday Roller Tour. A few minutes later, they will be up to 20,000 at the starting point. Together, for about three hours and over about thirty kilometres, they will glide up and down the streets of Paris on roller skates. Due to the crowd and to the participants' mobility, finding a friend is challenging. The main problem for friends participating in the tour is to find each other during the pauses, if they were separated after the start. Currently, in order to locate a friend, a participant should: (1) call his friend, using a cellphone, (2) describe the environment (street name and number, shops name, monuments, etc), and (3) according to the environment description, try to discover if the friend is forward or behind. In order to make it easier to find a friend, we propose a Bluetooth application to be embedded in cellphones. This application's ultimate goal is to provide users the ability to discover, not only their relative position in the tour, but also the positions of their participating friends. The application acts in two steps. First, it calculates the current relative position of the user (positioning), and then, through a communication protocol, sends this position to a user's friends (locating). In this demonstration, we do not consider the communication between skaters, but focus only on positioning.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115770054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Collaboration between Silvus Communication Systems and the UCLA WISR group has resulted in the first generation radio specifically designed to meet the needs of the CR and wireless networking community. The current platform is based on a COTS FPGA platform with dual-band RF capabilities. It implements a slight variant of the 802.11n draft spec. It is a fully self contained PHY solution with over 100 unique modes of operation. Moreover it features a robust API to the MAC through which all PHY parameters can be controlled on a per-packet basis. The same API will allow the PHY to communicate channel state information, SNR, and RSSI measurements to the MAC. A 16 micro-second packet decode latency ensures that the PHY processing does not inhibit the system's fast response to changing channel and interference condition.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132871546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

WHYNET framework enables seamless integration of physical, simulation and emulation components in a single framework, and allows the use of any combination of those components when evaluating a target wireless network scenario. In this article, we describe the rationale behind our hybrid testbed approach, and give an overview of the architectural components of the hybrid testbed and key technical challenges addressed in its design. Further, we present several case studies to demonstrate the value of the hybrid testbed for realistic and scalable evaluation of a broad range of wireless network scenarios, focusing on cross-layer interactions, heterogeneous and large-scale wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132517885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The network is implemented using mote-based RFID readers. To implement the MAC protocol,we develop an appropriate carrier sensing circuit using an RFID tag as an antenna and the mote as an apparatus to sample received signal strength. We have augmented a commercially available OEM RFID module with such carrier sensing capability and interfaced it with motes. Performance evaluation shows much superior performance relative to a naive and a randomized protocol in dense deployment environments both in regards to accuracy and time per tag read.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130388106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The GENI initiative will create an experimental facility for moving ideas toward practical solutions. For the initiative to succeed, the research community needs to come up with new ideas that can be verified or disproved by experiments on a large-scale network. Our principal contribution to twentieth-century networks was technology for moving ones and zeros (packaged in protocol data units)áfrom source to destination. Layered protocols isolate the ones and zeros from other properties of the information conveyed. This talk questions bits as the universal currency of information. It asks the research community to take a top down look at information networks and establish the conceptual foundation of future information systems.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123322019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A key obstacle to understanding and improving wireless networks has been the lack of a realistic yet flexible experimental methodology. Physical layer wireless network emulation promises to achieve much of the flexibility of wireless simulators while maintaining much of the realism of real wireless networks. We have developed a software architecture that tames the complexity of physical layer wireless network emulation, and presents users with a powerful yet ease-to-use interface. We present several case studies showing how this software architecture allows complex wireless experiments to be conducted in an efficient manner while still enabling novice users to quickly run simple experiments.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121309820","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address these challenges,we have exploited IEEE 802.11e-derived features to obtain more control over the MAC layer operation of off-the-shelf radios and implemented a measurement-system that uses CPU timestamp counter and radio hardware timestamps to monitor MAC activity with microsecond resolution. In addition to presenting performance of our available bandwidth estimation method using packet probes, we also discuss solutions and open issues to provide useful information for other testbed cross-layer protocol evaluations, which are likely to face similar challenges.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125067971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the design, implementation and analysis of a positioning system called COMPASS which is based on 802.11-compliant network infrastructure and digital compasses. On the mobile device, COMPASS samples the signal strength values of different access points in its communication range and utilizes the orientation of the user to preselect a subset of the training data. The remaining training data is used by a probabilistic positioning algorithm to determine the position of the user. While prior systems show limited accuracy due to blocking effects caused by the human body, we apply digital compasses to detect the orientations of the users so that we can deal with these blocking effects. After a short period of training our COMPASS system achieves an average error distance of less than 1.65 meters in our experimental environment of 312 square meters.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134119870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern requirements to wireless connectivity include mandatory QoS guarantees for a wide set of real-time applications: this is the case of the ever growing trend of VoIP calls. To this aim, WiMAX supports natively real-time traffic. In this paper, we report on the results of measurements performed on a WiMAX Alvarion testbed, located in Turin, Italy. In particular, through synthetic VoIP traffic generation, we obtained the corresponding E-model figures, thus tracing the system operation intervals.","PeriodicalId":439944,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st international workshop on Wireless network testbeds, experimental evaluation & characterization","volume":"22 11-12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120966356","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
