{"title":"Mixed Groups as a Way to Teach Meta-Skills to Engineering Students","authors":"Mustonen Lea","doi":"10.33422/2ND.ARETL.2020.03.82","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33422/2ND.ARETL.2020.03.82","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of this article is to describe an example of teaching so-called meta-skills in Häme University of Applied Sciences Electrical and Automation Engineering study programme. The method has been conducted twice, in 2018 and 2019. Both times the first-year students were given a development project in which they studied the basics of programming. More important than programming was to learn meta-skills: teamwork skills, language and communication skills, IT skills, problem-solving skills, and skills to apply knowledge to practice and acting in a multicultural environment. The feedback was gathered after the implementations by the questionnaire. The results show that students think this kind of pedagogical method improves their previously described meta-skills. For teachers this means working more as a supervisor than a source of knowledge. In addition to meta-skills, the method increases interaction between students of different cultural and educational backgrounds. The method works as means of internationalization for Finnish-speaking students. For foreign students, the method is one way of increasing interaction with Finnish-speaking students and can act as a part of the integration process to Finnish society.","PeriodicalId":439050,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Conference on Advanced Research in Education, Teaching and Learning","volume":"149 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124152227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Leadership community in an Icelandic school in times of Globalization","authors":"Inga Sigrún Atladóttir","doi":"10.33422/2ND.ARETL.2020.03.80","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33422/2ND.ARETL.2020.03.80","url":null,"abstract":"The period spanning the last decades has been called the time of globalization. It is evidenced by comparative studies that Iceland is one of the most globalized nations in the world. Studies have also shown that the Icelandic school system has not managed to adapt fully to these changes. My research (2012) suggests that Icelandic principals lack leadership skills and methods for dealing with communication problems and inducing employees and students to tackle difficult tasks. My aims were to changing the school culture and the leadership skills of the individual to improve the wellbeing of the students and staff, especially in dealing with antisocial behaviors and bullying. Data was collected with quantitative research methods and subsequently I implemented a school policy called the Leadership Community in a small school in Iceland. This school policy is still at work in the school. Educational institutions in the time of globalization bear characteristics of an open social system and personal communication. The concepts that I used as a foundation to change the school culture are \"pure relationship\" and \"open heart\". These theories are based on diversity, honesty and trust and they show how the characteristics of globalization can be used as a basis for these values. In my lecture I will explain the theory and practice behind the school policy, the results of my research, what changes I have made in the school during the last seven years and how they have affected the wellbeing of students and staff in the school.","PeriodicalId":439050,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Conference on Advanced Research in Education, Teaching and Learning","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132266746","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants were recruited from three master programs: foundations of education (n=21), curriculum and method of teaching (29), and Administration and educational planning (18). Their moral reasoning was measured by the Defining Issues Test (DIT). The results indicate that the sample scored lower in principled moral reasoning than graduate students in general. However, they scored predominantly at stage 4 in Kohlberg’s moral judgment theory. Results also indicate that there are no significant differences in principled moral reasoning of the participants according to their academic disciplines.","PeriodicalId":439050,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Conference on Advanced Research in Education, Teaching and Learning","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125613455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
