How and when can educators be reasonably sure that an interdisciplinary unit or project, rich in both the sciences and the arts, has delivered on its implicit promise – by adding value to a student’s education in ways that are beyond the scope of traditional discipline-specific learning? I attempt to address this question with a case study of Theatre of Will’s “Save It Now,” a pilot program for 4th, 5th and 6th graders at eight Los Angeles public schools that integrates theater arts, music and the STEM disciplines in a 9-week unit on energy, water and climate change. I am one of the program’s four teaching artists. My goal here is not to convince readers that “Save it Now” is successful, but rather to propose a theoretical framework for understanding, categorizing and evaluating STEAM programs in general. theatreofwill.org Author/Artist Bio Christopher D. Davidson is a teaching artist at Theatre of Will and an adjunct professor of Sociology at Southern New Hampshire University. Willard Simms is the founder and President of Theatre of Will, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the integration of arts and class room education. Through the creative utilization of theater, music, and the visual arts Theatre of Will creates STEAM Residencies and also Science/History Assemblies that supplement Los Angeles Unified School District core curriculum and match Next Generation Sciense Standards. Several STEAM Residencies are currently scheduled for the 2017-18 LAUSD school year.","PeriodicalId":438783,"journal":{"name":"The STEAM Journal","volume":"480 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122782878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a scienceintegratedwith-art approach, SciArt Exchange supports, prepares, and convenes people of all ages, backgrounds and affiliations to discuss and potentially solve space, science, and technology challenges. This field note shares the Humans in Space Art Program and the Project Mars Competition. Author/Artist Bio Jancy McPhee has a B.A. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Biophysics from Brandeis University. She was a cellular and molecular neuroscience researcher in academia for 17 years before joining the National Space Biomedical Research Association and later the Universities Space Research Association to manage various aspects of National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) domestic and international space life sciences research programs. Since 2010, her goals have been to find motivating and novel ways to enhance space education and science and technology innovation and to promote global collaboration. She created the international Humans in Space Art Program to encourage people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds to think about and creatively communicate their visions of the future of human space exploration through visual, literary, musical, and video art. So far, the Program has engaged 1000’s of artists, and 100,000’s have viewed multi-media artwork displays and performances online, locally on Earth, and in space. Most recently, she established SciArt Exchange, a nonprofit to expand the Humans in Space Art Program and initiate other global science-integrated-with-art activities that inspire the world about space, science and technology and prepare them for the future. These activities include training on topics such as science communication, creativity and teamwork, and the value of SciArt and other techniques to STEAM STEM education. We explored everything from the way in which facets of personality drift in and out of the subconscious to the beautiful, mercurial nature of gender. Author/Artist Bio H. Leslie Foster II is an urban nomad. Born in Singapore to American parents in October, 1984, he experienced his first plane flight 6 months later and has not stopped traveling since. Raised in Indonesia, Michigan, the Philippines, and Thailand, Leslie gained a unique aesthetic sensibility. After studying biology in Thailand and German in Austria and Germany, Leslie completed a film production B.S. and a International Studies B.A. at Southern Adventist University in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Over his career, Leslie has shot music videos in Serbia and Poland, written a script a day for an entire year, started a non-profit film production company, spent 5 weeks undercover in Jamaica shooting a documentary about violent homophobia, and braved an Austrian blizzard or two. In 2013, Leslie began to combine his more experimental film sensibilities with installation art and has been a part of several group shows.
