In this paperI will critique attempts made by the ‘psy’ disciplines’ (psychiatry, psychology and psychotherapy) to use positivism to enter the citadel of science. Amongst other things, I will argue that their efforts have resulted in the corruption and distortion of the principles of (positivist) science. I will argue that positivist methodologies are unable, even in principle, to capture the intricacies of human exchange; in lieu of positivism, notions of emergence and complex responsive processes are more appropriate. Additionally, the argument will also raise questions about the idea of science itself, and claim that much of what passes for science in this territory is a distortion of reality rather than a description of it.","PeriodicalId":43801,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic Practice","volume":"69 1","pages":"101 - 116"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2023-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83532551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I give focus to three ever fundamental, foundational areas: (a) the anchoring convictions that ground my supervisory perspective (the supervision foundation upon which I stand); (b1) my search to identify the crucial commonalities that animate my own supervisory practice and perhaps bind us all together as supervisors (a common factors, common processes, common practices perspective); and (b2) my complementary effort to accordingly propose an explanatory framework within which those binding commonalities could be situated (the Contextual Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Supervision Relationship Model); and (c) my struggle to work at forever making culture an integral part of who I am, how I think, and how I act as a supervisor (striving to incorporate a multicultural orientation into my practice and bring the Cultural Third to life). I offer these personal sharings, my personal perspective (along with perspective-consistent references), in hopes of stimulating further reader reflection, dialogue, and conversation about these core matters of quintessential psychoanalytic/psychodynamic supervisory importance.","PeriodicalId":43801,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic Practice","volume":"21 1","pages":"25 - 47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79559945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Then, a man alone in an office, high above buildings. A woman with a red hat staring at a small teacup in her hands. Sometimes there are groups together, but even then, there is a sense of watching people who have been caught in that intimate space where the look is outwards, but the gaze, turned inwards. Often in the gaze, Hopper seems to capture a sense of emptiness. A sense we all have at times but can also feel raw, exposing, evoke fear or a feeling of nakedness when observed. It can be like being caught out. Someone else has glimpsed a secret; that underneath it all, there is emptiness. In his collection of poems, the Four Quartets, T.S Eliot describes the times when emptiness is exposed and the unease this creates. It is like that moment when the façade in the theatre is rolled away, leaving only blackness.
