Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging network architecture which exerts a separation between the control plane and the data plane. The SDN controller can centrally control the network state through modifying the flow tables maintained by routers. Network operators can flexibly split arbitrary flows to outgoing links through the deployment of the SDN. However, SDN has its own challenges of full deployment, which makes the full deployment of SDN difficult in the short term. In this paper, we explore the traffic engineering in a SDN/OSPF hybrid network. In our scenario, the OSPF weights and flow splitting ratio of the SDN nodes can both be changed. The controller can arbitrarily split the flows coming into the SDN nodes. The regular nodes still run OSPF. Our contribution is that we propose a novel algorithm called SOTE that can obtain a lower maximum link utilization. We reap a greater benefit compared with the results of the OSPF network and the SDN/OSPF hybrid network with fixed weight setting. We also find that when only 30% of the SDN nodes are deployed, we can obtain a near optimal performance.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115154437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All of these functionalities commonly rely on a well-studied technology, packet classification. Unlike the conventional classification problem to search for the action taken at a single switch, the global network view requires to identify the network-wide behavior of the packet, which is defined as a combination of switch actions. Conventional classification methods, however, fail to well support network-wide behaviors, since the search space is complicatedly partitioned due to the combinations. This paper proposes a novel packet classification method that efficiently supports network-wide packet behaviors. Our method utilizes a compressed data structure named the multi-valued decision diagram, allowing it to manipulate the complex search space with several algorithms. Through detailed analysis, we optimize the classification performance as well as the construction of decision diagrams. Experiments with real network datasets show that our method identifies the packet behavior at 20.1 Mpps on a single CPU core with only 8.4 MB memory, by contrast, conventional methods failed to work even with 16 GB memory. We believe that our method is essential for realizing advanced applications that can fully leverage the potential of software defined networking.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116776821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By utilizing concurrent links, these protocols achieve significantly better performance than traditional approaches. However, they explicitly or implicitly assume that wireless links are independent, which overestimates the true spatial diversity in reality. For the first time, this paper analyzes the impact of link correlation on network coding and introduces Correlated Coding, a link correlation-aware design that seeks to optimize the transmission efficiency by maximizing necessary coding opportunities. Correlated coding uses only one-hop information, which makes it work in a fully distributed manner and introduces minimal communication overhead. The highlight of our design is its broad applicability and effectiveness. We implement our design with four broadcast protocols and three unicast protocols, and evaluate them extensively with one 802.11 test bed and three 802.15.4 test beds running TelosB, MICAz, and Green Orbs nodes. The experiment results show that (i) more coding opportunities do not lead to more transmission benefits, and (ii) compared to coding aware protocols, the number of coding operations is reduced while the transmission efficiency is improved.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124794670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research community has been expending a lot of efforts to come up with a general management paradigm that is able to hide the details of the physical infrastructure and enable flexible network management. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is such a paradigm that simplifies network management and enables network innovations. In this survey paper, by reviewing existing SDN management layers (platforms), we identify the general common management architecture for SDN networks, and further identify the design requirements of the management layer that is at the core of the architecture. We also point out open issues and weaknesses of existing SDN management layers. We conclude with a promising future direction for improving the SDN management layer.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"300 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123240905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We introduce a new dual radio communication model, where a long-range, low cost, and low rate radio is integrated into smart phones to assist regular radio interfaces such as WiFi and Bluetooth. We propose to use the long-range radio to carry out small management data packets to improve the routing protocols. Specifically, we develop new schemes built on the long-range radio to improve the efficiency of the path establishment process in the existing on-demand Ad-Hoc routing protocols. We have prototyped our solution LAAR on Android phones and evaluated the performance with small scale experiments and large scale simulation implemented on NS2. The results show that LAAR significantly improve the performance in terms of the overhead and the number of messages transferred in the network.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116081923","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These personal patterns are reflected on the different rhythm, strength, and angle preferences of the applied force. Since smart phones are equipped with various sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, and touch screen sensors, capturing a user's tapping behaviors can be done seamlessly. Exploiting the combination of four features (acceleration, pressure, size, and time) extracted from smart phone sensors, we propose a non-intrusive user verification mechanism to substantiate whether an authenticating user is the true owner of the smart phone or an impostor who happens to know the pass code. Based on the tapping data collected from over 80 users, we conduct a series of experiments to validate the efficacy of our proposed system. Our experimental results show that our verification system achieves high accuracy with averaged equal error rates of down to 3.65%. As our verification system can be seamlessly integrated with the existing user authentication mechanisms on smart phones, its deployment and usage are transparent to users and do not require any extra hardware support.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129214660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Recursive Inter Network Architecture (RINA) is our solution to enable network programmability. ProtoRINA is a user-space prototype of RINA and provides users with a framework with common mechanisms so a user can program recursive-networking policies without implementing mechanisms from scratch. In this paper, we focus on how routing policies, which is an important aspect of network management, can be programmed using ProtoRINA, and demonstrate how ProtoRINA can be used to achieve better performance for a video streaming application by instantiating different routing policies over the GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations) test bed, which provides a large-scale experimental facility for networking research.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130399442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite continuous efforts, prior solutions have significant drawbacks. They either only support quite a limited number of senders (e.g., 40-60), which is not sufficient, or require non-trivial system modifications, which is impractical and not incrementally deployable. We present PAC, a simple yet very effective design to tame TCP in cast congestion via Proactive ACK Control at the receiver. The key design principle behind PAC is that we treat ACK not only as the acknowledgement of received packets but also as the trigger for new packets. Leveraging data center network characteristics, PAC enforces a novel ACK control to release ACKs in such a way that the ACK-triggered in-flight data can fully utilize the bottleneck link without causing in cast collapse even when faced with over a thousand senders. We implement PAC on both Windows and Linux platforms, and extensively evaluate PAC using small-scale test bed experiments and large-scale ns-2 simulations. Our results show that PAC significantly outperforms the previous representative designs such as ICTCP and DCTCP by supporting 40X (i.e., 40?1600) more senders, further, it does not introduce spurious timeout and retransmission even when the measured 99th percentile RTT is only 3.6ms. Our implementation experiences show that PAC is readily deployable in production data enters, while requiring minimal system modification compared to prior designs.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127924474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data volume is expected to increase in the near future, whereas the mobile bandwidth capacity is likely to increase significantly slower. Especially peak hour traffic often leads to overloaded mobile networks and poor user experience. This increases costs for the mobile operator, which has to adapt to the peak demand by capacity over provisioning. The new approach proposed in this paper aims to leverage the user's context and video meta-information to unleash the potential of video prefetching. Based on observed user interactions with social networks, the videos a user consumes from social neighbours can be predicted. Moreover, the user's daily routine even enables a prediction of the time when videos are consumed as well as the network capabilities available at that point. First results show that partial prefetching based on content categories provides a potential for efficiently offloading mobile networks. Additionally, the user experience can be improved as freezing playbacks of videos can be decreased. Initial results show a high potential for category-based prefeching.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134313660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In wireless settings, the problem of providing network performance guarantees is even more difficult due to variabilities in link characteristics. Changes in wireless link performance, such as packet loss rate, occur at shorter time scales compared to their wired counterparts. Thus, the finite reaction time of traditional solutions, e.g. Routing, make them unreliable in mitigating the impact of these variations on user performance. Such variability in the delivered rates could be detrimental to particular types of applications such as video and audio which are sensitive to short term variations.","PeriodicalId":437864,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 22nd International Conference on Network Protocols","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117278998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
