Passive RFID has a relatively small sensing range compared to other radio-frequency-based localization techniques. Therefore in practice the deployed tags may not cover the whole scene of interest. Additionally, in the area of pedestrian localization, the unpredictable movement of pedestrians makes a complete RFID tag coverage extremely difficult. This paper introduces a hybrid RFID localization system used for indoor pedestrians to overcome the coverage shortfall associated with passive RFID tags. Two extra sources are used to assist the RFID system: local INS sensors and ZigBee nodes. A particle filter serves as a fusion framework. A test scenario was built with 220 RFID tags and 8 ZigBee nodes deployed in a museum. Different algorithms were evaluated in this deployment. The results show that the hybrid approach produces robust localization even with a low number of tags.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125119842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relative position information is gathered from inertial smartphone sensors using a step detection and an orientation estimate. Our map data is hosted on a server employing a map renderer and a SQL database. The database includes a complete multilevel office building, within which the user can navigate. The area is monitored by an RFID reading system (consisting of four antennae and a fixed RFID reader) and an inexpensive pair of webcams. The trolleys are equipped with a passive RFID tag and an optical marker. The system uses a Particle Filter to combine Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) data from the RFID system and image data from the webcams. We propose procedures to improve RFID and camera localization accuracy. The resulting system achieves an accuracy of less than 30 cm in static and the most likely dynamic scenarios.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122946219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the assumption that TOA is the integer multiples of chip duration, our decoupled multiuser ranging (DEMR) estimator employs integrate-and-dump filter (IDF) in chip sampling rate instead of matched filter (MF) as the front-end to reduce sampling rate and to simplify the structure of estimator. This subsampling estimator is simplified substantially in dense multipath environment furthermore due to the long repetition time of DS-UWB pulse. Simulation results show that compared with other low complexity TOA estimator, DEMR estimator is not only quite near-far resistant, but also can obtain noticeable ranging performance in the fully loaded system.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129606422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The concept is based on a unified signal architecture. Within this framework channel estimation is the core part, since it links communication and positioning algorithms. Thus, channel estimation serves twofold purposes: Firstly, it is inherently required for data detection and secondly it is employed to estimate positioning relevant information like the time of arrival (TOA). JCAP aims at exploiting synergetic effects. Employing semi-blind channel estimation is beneficial in this context, since it allows to assimilate the estimated communication data as virtual training.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116447151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On-body devices are localized at the building scale by combining peer-to-peer range measurements over intra-WBAN links and further measurements with respect to external anchors forming the building infrastructure. Those measurements rely on two main low data rate radio technologies, namely the Impulse Radio - Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) and a Narrow Band technology at 2.4GHz, providing respectively Time (Difference) Of Arrival (T(D)OA) estimates and Received Signal Strength Indicators (RSSI). This new Large Scale Individual Motion Capture (LSIMC) functionality is then investigated within two algorithmic embodiments. In a first 2-step scheme, the positions of on-body nodes are preliminary estimated in a body-strapped Local Coordinates System (LCS) before being expressed into an absolute Global Coordinates System (GCS) after a set of transformations, whereas the second option considers localizing directly the nodes into the GCS using all the available measurements. Simulations illustrate particularly the harmful impact of body obstructions. We also propose a method to mitigate these effects and approximate measurements over obstructed or erroneous links, by computing the shortest distance in graph neighborhood.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":" 85","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113952824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We need two contributions towards this end. First, we present a novel dead-reckoning technique, to gather accurate user motion estimates. This motion data is combined with information about the signal strength of access points of the wireless infrastructure. Our second contribution lies in the efficient integration of this complementary information into a system that allows for easy mapping and requires nothing but a smartphone. All the required data is gathered from people walking casually around in an area of interest while carrying a smartphone in their pocket.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116429374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An hybrid model is introduced which describes the dynamic behavior of the various sensors not only under each operating mode, but also during mode transitions. The data fusion problem is then written within the Bayesian probabilistic framework, as an estimation problem. Its optimal solution can be approximated numerically in multiple ways. The Gaussian mixture approach is well adapted because of the multiple hypothesis context. This led us to the development of an hybrid Gaussian mixture filter. The application we dealt with is the improvement of the relative altitude sensing function onboard aircraft. It aims to deliver the height of the aircraft above the ground. Currently this function is only supported by the radio-altimeters system along with specific thresholding and voting logics. Our approach leads to a joint estimation of the relative height and of the sensors operating modes. It thus allows to combine various sensors while monitoring their modes easily. We particularly focus on the case of two radio altimeters, which is the current situation.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127453213","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frequency of the data, and denseness of the underlying road network still dictate the accuracy limits of current MM algorithms. One practical way that can improve the accuracy of most MM approaches is to use more precise weights for the candidate road segments. Because of the geometric nature of the MM problem, proximity-weights have been considered in almost every MM study. However, being formulated through the shortest distance measure, these weights are prone to inaccuracies. We propose a new, more precise, proximity-weight formulation based on a cumulative proximity function which only assumes that the positioning data displays Gaussian distribution errors. Proposed formulations are developed independent of any MM approach, and for this reason they can be used easily under any future MM algorithm.","PeriodicalId":434944,"journal":{"name":"2013 10th Workshop on Positioning, Navigation and Communication (WPNC)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133324464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
