Based on the pre-established protocol, we ended up with 9 studies. Based on rigorous analysis, we found that vitamin D deficiency early in life is a risk factor for the development of ASD and that vitamin D supplementation improves the core symptoms of ASD. Our study concludes that vitamin D supplementation is beneficial for individuals with autism, that vitamin D deficiency early in embryonic life increases the risk of ASD, and that our study supports the idea that prevention begins with vitamin D supplementation early in life. At the same time, we must recognize that our current conclusions support the benefits of vitamin D supplementation for children with ASD, but we are unable to determine the causal relationship, ie, how vitamin D works in ASD, and we need more basic research to explore the mechanisms involved.","PeriodicalId":43423,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Dietary Supplements","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.3,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141691536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although breastfeeding is widely practiced in Ethiopia, only 59% of the children under the age of six months were exclusively breastfed. Objective: This study aimed to assess the time to cessation of EBF and associated factors among infants aged 6–9 months in health facilities under Kirkos sub-city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 287 mothers attending Kirkos sub-city health facilities from September 1 to 30, 2020. Bivariable and multivariable Cox regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with the time to cessation of EBF. Results: According to this finding, the median period for EBF discontinuation was 6 months. Early cessation of EBF was 130 (45.8%) days. Mothers with average household monthly income <15 USD [AHR, 5.31 (95% CI: 2.82, 9.99)] and 15–30 USD [AHR, 2.59 (95% CI: 1.41, 4.77)], EBF counseling at post-natal care [AHR, 0.18 (95% CI: 0.10, 0.31)], media access [AHR, 1.67 (95% CI: 1.06, 2.63)], child comorbidity [AHR, 0.51 (95% CI: 0.29, 0.88)], bottle feeding [AHR, 3.28 (95% CI: 2.14 5.01)], unfavorable attitude towards EBF [AHR, 3.59 (95% CI: 2.02, 6.40)] were significant factors associated with the hazard of cessation of EBF. Conclusion: In this investigation, the cumulative survival probability of EBF to 6 months was 45.8%, with a median duration of 6 months (95% CI 5.83–6.18) months. Unfavorable attitudes, child comorbidity, and bottle feeding were factors associated with earlier cessation of EBF. Media access, household monthly higher income, and EBF counseling at postnatal care were factors associated with prolonged EBF. As a result, supporting behavioral change and media access for effective communication on EBF duration practice following the established standard should be targeted during both ante-natal and post-natal care visits.","PeriodicalId":43423,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Dietary Supplements","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140758156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study objective is to evaluate the impact of CBD on vitamin D 3 receptor (VDR) protein expressions, tissue elasticity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-senescence activity in human and rodent cell lines. Methods: Cell viability was estimated by MTT assay. Relative quantification (RQ) of VDR protein expression was measured by RT-PCR. Tissue elasticity was measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Cellular senescence and ATP were performed using trypan blue exclusion test and colorimetric assay, respectively. Results: Cell viability assay data showed CBD was safe and nontoxic upto 7.5 μM. The VDR protein expression was significantly increased by 109.71% ( p = 0.013), 236.96% ( p ≤ 0.001), 170% ( p ≤ 0.001), 100% ( p = 0.019), 80% ( p = 0.021), 427.27% ( p ≤ 0.001), 366.67% ( p ≤ 0.001), 56.31% ( p = 0.016), and 63.84% ( p ≤ 0.001) in MG-63, MDA-MB-231, SH-SY5Y, HEK-293, HT-29, EaHy-926, HepG2, A-549, and C2C12 cells, respectively compared to the normal control group. CBD treatment significantly reduced the levels of TNF-α (46.58%; p ≤ 0.049) and IL-6 (43.61%; p ≤ 0.001) at CBD-5 μM compared to the vehicle control group. Tissue elasticity was significantly ( p ≤ 0.001) increased by 37.09% and 49.49% in CBD-2.5 and CBD-5 μM, respectively, compared to the vehicle control group. Significantly ( p ≤ 0.001) reduced senescence cells by 39.22% in CBD-5 μM than the vehicle control group. The level of ATP was significantly ( p ≤ 0.001) increased by 90.55, 117.06, and 153.54% in CBD-1, CBD-2.5, and CBD-5 μM, respectively, compared to the vehicle control group. Conclusion: Overall, data suggest that CBD considerably improved VDR protein expression, inflammation, cell growth, tissue elasticity, and enhanced mitochondrial bioenergetics in multiple cell lines. In this study, for the first time, we showed the evidence suggesting that the VDR plays a critical and multifaceted role in various types of human cells. However, since amaranth cultivation and production in Ethiopia is highly scarce, its impact to lessen the malnutrition problem has not been explored to its maximum potential. This review assesses the potential role of amaranth crops for nutrition security in Ethiopia. Worldwide yield of amaranth is about 35–40 tons/ha while in Ethiopia it is still 2.25 tons/ha which is 17 times lower than the world average. Amaranth is described by its nutritious and gluten-free grain that contains a significant amount of protein, which ranges between 14% and 17%, fat (5–9%) and starch (62%). However, the highest biological value of amaranth protein was reported to be 75–79%. It can also be used in savory dishes as well as sweet breakfast, porridge, salads, and baked breads in different countries. However, amaranth is not extensively cultivated in Africa and merely South Africa is conducting large researches and grand projects in a wider scope. It is a neglected crop especially in Ethiopia. Amaranth production is still at the beginning or low stage. The government also losses its focus of attention on amaranth to solve nutrition insecurity in Ethiopia. Thus, to produce amaranth crop in a broader range and use it as a key solution for malnutrition problems in Ethiopia, comprehensive varietal adaptation, continuous training, and strong market linkage should be given attention by the concerned bodies such as research institutes, industries, non-governmental organizations and ministerial bureaus.","PeriodicalId":43423,"journal":{"name":"Nutrition and Dietary Supplements","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2023-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139305126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
