This article argues that this split ignores the possible common ground between the two, largely to the disadvantage of students. In particular, it will examine how and why many art and design students feel alienated by the methods employed in the teaching of theory. The article further argues that there is a role for research as a common ground between theory and practice, and this common ground provides opportunities to design curricula that enable students to integrate reflexive and reflective practice.","PeriodicalId":433869,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2005: In the Making","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130796617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article we present pulsArt - a physical and digital installation designed for the home to represent different family members’ level of activity by water running down blocks of salt based on a real-time reading of the individual family member’s pulse. We describe how pulsArt explores novel ways of looking at the interaction between the physical, the social and the digital and how it acts as a context-aware artefact, amplifying the domestic setting to provide a new kind of awareness in the family. In doing so, we seek to develop new perspectives on designing interactive and context-aware systems for the home and what values they might support.","PeriodicalId":433869,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2005: In the Making","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123170922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work aims to promote and develop language and literacy development within an innovative contemporary illustration context. The work makes use of research into specific learning methods (such as cloze procedure, semantic and syntactic evaluation, word identification and phonics) and embeds them within a traditional fairytale narrative. The aim of the book is to stimulate and motivate learners through use of tested learning methods alongside inventive use of illustration, layout and letterforms.","PeriodicalId":433869,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2005: In the Making","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115700974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, I will try to briefly clarify and give some examples of the use of experimental and cross- disciplinary methods in design research. I will start by analysing the relationships between museum objects and cultural history museums based on the assumption that the practices used for representation create meanings. I am particularly interested in how meanings are built into such visual elements of exhibition design as light, colour and materials. The process of meaning creation is semiotic in nature and exhibition design always contains several layers of meanings, which exist simultaneously in a spatial construction. In this article I will focus on spatial meanings in exhibition design.","PeriodicalId":433869,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2005: In the Making","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117036158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For keyboard and mouse operated, screen-based user interfaces the main focus has been on the cognitive skills of humans. This article takes as a basic preamble that a shift from keyboards to tangible interaction design requires one to study the skills built through bodily movement. The emerging field of Anthropology of Movement can help in studying and understanding human movement. With inspiration from anthropology, philosophy and sociology, I have analyzed a short video sequence of a plant operator operating very tangible machinery. Tangible interaction can be regarded as a series of discrete actions, but based on the analysis I will argue that the movements in between the hands-on actions are crucial to understanding skilled user interaction. Possibly designing with respect to the in-betweens - when the body adjusts towards the next action - holds great promise for making tangible interaction design a success.","PeriodicalId":433869,"journal":{"name":"Nordes 2005: In the Making","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128337740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
