The main factor apart from channel impairments, which affects the performance of such protocols is collision either within an information time slot (in PRMA) or a reservation time slots (in PRMA++). These collisions waste available channel resources and can cause undesirable congestion and lower the service quality. We generalise the idea of PRMA which results in the upper-bound capacity calculation and reveals new insight into the relationship between the parameters of such protocols. The performance dependent parameters such as delay, throughput, statistics, capacity and packet dropping probability are mathematically analysed and generalised such that they can be applicable to all reservation-based multiple access schemes. Through such analysis the upper-bound performance for such protocols is derived. The sensitivity of the system performance to different system measures (such as throughput, delay, packet dropping statistics) are evaluated for a range of system parameters (bandwidth, number of users, voice activity factor). Finally, the performance of PRMA and PRMA++ with their upper-bound values are compared.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133561698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system we consider has a network of base transmitters, which simulcast information to a collection of mobile users, and a network of base receivers tuned to the same channel. The mobile users request bandwidth by contending during specified time slots. We present models that consider the combined effects of noise, co-channel interference, and other channel characteristics in computing the probability of successful packet transmission. We obtain numerical results via simulation that can help to understand issues involved in engineering a system.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134232469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The probability that a data packet successfully arrives at the destined mobile terminal highly depends on the activity of nearby co-channel base stations. Motivated by favorable results from earlier studies we consider a network in which all base stations use the same radio channel. Packets lost because of mutual interference are retransmitted with a random backoff mechanism. Recursive arguments are applied for the calculation of the mean time necessary for a base station to deliver the packet, provided that in an initial state all stations have packets to transmit. The average delivery time, maximized over all base station locations, is also analyzed. The relations obtained give some further insight into the behavior of a (highway) cellular data network.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134575172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The parameters of the proposed simplified model are: the distance between the base antenna and street intersection, distance between the intersection and mobile antenna, width of the street containing base antenna, and the width of the street containing the mobile antenna. Using this model base-mobile path losses for microcellular environments have been evaluated under diversified conditions and the results have been compared with the more sophisticated multi-ray geometric model, and with some empirical results reported in the literature. The fit is, in general, very good. The proposed model can be used in estimating the coverage for microcellular mobile radio communication systems. The computation time of this model is minimal compared to standard multi-ray models.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"66 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114050794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We intend to: (1) evaluate the performance of sectored receivers in minimizing multipath dispersion and, (2) conclude if sectored receivers may be used successfully to reduce both ambient noise and multipath dispersion, by estimating only the ambient noise at each sector of the receiver. The results show that sectored receivers can reduce significantly the multipath dispersion, but selection of the sector with the best impulse response is required. Also, to achieve significant gains the field-of-view of the sectors have to be smaller than 50/spl deg/.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114737773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The downlink performance of the system is evaluated in terms of the bit error rate and user capacity. The results are compared for two analytical channel models and one empirical model based on measured profiles. One analytical model assumes independent identically distributed path gains, the other one assumes independent exponentially distributed path gains. The results obtained with the analytical channel models show more pessimistic results than with the measured channels.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123501773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic system operates using the orthogonal multicarrier technique combined with direct sequence code division multiple access. The non-stationary behaviour of the channel is tracked by a periodic sounding. This technique leads to relatively simple receivers that can be implemented with current VLSI and DSP technology. Taking into account the challenges related to an up-link implementation, the system performance in the down-link is investigated both for synchronous and asynchronous DS-CDMAs. In particular, the schemes which work with Walsh sequences (in the synchronous case) are compared with the schemes operating by binary Gold sequences and 4-phase near-optimal sequences (in the asynchronous case). The comparison is carried out on the basis of significant parameters such as bit error rate, spectral efficiency and multipath counteraction for different system configurations.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128535110","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We find upper and lower bounds on capacity for a certain cross-correlation measure, and show that if the number of users is larger than the sequence length, that the lower bound tends to the maximum capacity with increasing sequence length. This implies that for large systems, random spreading sequences are optimal in terms of capacity. We also examine more realistic cases for the number of users and sequence length, and find that in certain cases that the use of random spreading sequences results only in a very small decrease in capacity.","PeriodicalId":433500,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of 6th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-09-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130873013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
