However, a judicious use of these network devices must be done based on their limited resources and the specific features of the application to be offloaded. This paper promotes FlowBlaze, a stateful hardware programmable data plane, as a candidate for offloading online MapReduce tasks. Above all, tasks with strict time requirements can benefit from in-network computing since it can significantly lower their latency. Given that MapReduce is a generic programming paradigm, in this paper we first try to identify which subset of MapReduce operations can be transparently offloaded to a specific hardware architecture and which are the limitations of this offloading in terms of memory and computational resources. After, we show how the FlowBlaze architecture can match the partition/aggregation paradigm and we discuss a set of primitives exposed by the FlowBlaze abstraction to perform mapping and aggregation. Finally, we prove the feasibility of this approach applying it to a click-stream analysis use case.","PeriodicalId":433278,"journal":{"name":"2020 23rd Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks and Workshops (ICIN)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123145519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the emergence of many IoT protocols promises Internet connectivity to a large number of devices, it also leads to an inevitable fragmentation that hinders the IoT adoption. The existing literature focuses on creating device abstractions to deal with the multiplicity of protocols, but little work has been done to eliminate the root cause of fragmentation - the number of protocols itself. This paper proposes a novel approach to simplify IoT by design based on the Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA) and explores RINA's benefits such as reducing protocol complexity, improving standardization, and enhancing security.","PeriodicalId":433278,"journal":{"name":"2020 23rd Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks and Workshops (ICIN)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123330437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, Telco operators aim to deploy a cost effective network services within their next generation mobile networks. By leveraging cloud-native architectures, the stringent 5G services requirements can be satisfied while reducing both CAPEX and OPEX. Concretely, the adoption of microservice software design enables the disaggregation of Telco applications into small independent cloud-native network functions. Theses microservices, deployed as containers, are lightweight and perform in an independent way. However, in spite of its various benefits, microservice architecture raises new challenges to deal with in the network function virtualization (NFV) ecosystem. Typically, the service function chaining (SFC) of cloud-native network functions becomes extremely complex and error-prone due to the high number of microservices. In this paper, we address the problem of 5G traffic steering for cloud-native SFC in microservice based NFV ecosystem. Specifically, we envision and deploy an SDNless SFC framework ensuring efficient traffic steering between cloud-native network functions. Besides, we propose an optimized network-aware load balancing algorithm capable of carrying efficiently the traffic while considering the underlying infrastructure network state. Based on robust experiments conducted in the deployed Kubernetes-based platform, the results show the efficiency of our strategy in terms of deployment time and network performance.","PeriodicalId":433278,"journal":{"name":"2020 23rd Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks and Workshops (ICIN)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127973888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those use cases induce diverse requirements on the mobile network infrastructure. Network Slicing is one of the key features in 5G to address this issue. Network Slicing organizes the applications in network slices, whereby they are isolated, logical end-to-end networks for different use cases, sharing a common physical network infrastructure. They can be set up, changed and deactivated dynamically and in realtime. Therefore, efficient Network Slice Embedding algorithms are required for the assignment and allocation of network slice resources. In this paper, a novel, efficient approach for such an algorithm is proposed. It is a heuristic which meets the specific requirements of Network Slice Embedding, based on the algorithm provided by Cheng et al. In addition to their topology-aware node ranking algorithm, three alternative ranking techniques for the node mapping are introduced. The Network Slice Embedding heuristic and its ranking algorithms are evaluated on three generic blueprints of network slices and multiple mobile network sizes. The results show that the proposed heuristic is suitable for real-time embedding as it is robust, flexible and scalable and achieves high acceptance ratios.","PeriodicalId":433278,"journal":{"name":"2020 23rd Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks and Workshops (ICIN)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127092059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to achieve this, slice management systems need to combine different types of orchestrators. The combined usage of such orchestrators can be performed in many ways and related studies of standardization bodies have led to various open issues. This paper presents a solution based on a multi-tier orchestrator which glues NFV, MEC, and Cloud-native orchestrators using API abstraction layers and inter-orchestrator coordination workflows, while revisiting some standardized directives for NFV-MEC integration. The multi-tier orchestrator is evaluated against standard approaches that are based on the aforementioned directives, showing performance enhancements of up to 13x in terms of CPU load of certain orchestrator hosts in scenarios where up to 15 services are instantiated concurrently in an integrated NFV-MEC environment.","PeriodicalId":433278,"journal":{"name":"2020 23rd Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks and Workshops (ICIN)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125934840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
