This study was carried out under controlled conditions in the Animal Bio-Assay laboratory in the University of Zimbabwe from April 1998 to June 1998. On day 21, birds were randomly allocated to one of the four dietary treatments. Diets were isonitrogenous, provided similar amounts of metabolisable energy (ME) and all other nutrients according to literature requirements. Birds were given ad libitum access to feed and water. After six weeks the birds were slaughtered and dressed weights and abdominal fat pad weights were recorded. Carcass samples were also analysed for dry matter, ash, crude protein, ether extractable fat, calcium and phosphorus. Increasing the proportion of duckweed in the diet was associated with a concomitant decrease in feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion efficiency, dressed and abdominal fat pad weight (P 0.05) in birds fed the control diet and that containing 10 percent duckweed, except for the lower (P Journal of Applied Science in Southern Africa Vol.5, No.1 pp. 25-34","PeriodicalId":43299,"journal":{"name":"JASSA-The Finsia Journal of Applied Finance","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87627024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main VAM genera Acaulospora, Scutellospora, Gigaspora, Glomus, Sclerocystis and Entrophospora were represented in the study sites. The relative abundance was Glomus>Scutellospora>Sclerocytis>Gigaspora>Entrophospora at all sites except at Chabwino (fallow soil) and Thorn Park (sorghum) where Acaulospora>Scutellospora and Sclerocytis>Scutellospora = Acaulospora. Relative proportions of different VAM genera were similar across soils but population sizes varied with soil management. There was no clear relationship between VAM spore numbers and cropping history although among the cultivated plots, soils that had legumes as the previous or current crop generally had higher VAM populations than under sorghum. Of the soil parameters measured, only percent organic carbon was significantly correlated with VAM numbers and infective propagules. The mucilage from ruredzo (Dicerocaryum Zanguebarium) was extracted from dried leaves and crosslinked with epichlorohydrin. The yield of the crosslinked mucilage (CLM) ranged from 78 percent when crude mucilage in solution was used to 95 percent when purified solid mucilage was used. The bed volume of the CLM, which ranged from 4.5 ml/g to 11.5 nl/g depending on the nature of the starting material, was influenced by pH and ionic strength of the suspending medium and by the presence of ethanol. The concentration of free carboxyl groups in the CLM ranged from 1.17 meq/g when crude solutions of the mucilage were used to 1.47 meq/g when purified solid mucilage was used.
