Proliferation of access to electronic serials has caused the libraries to consider whether the current cataloging model is the best way to present electronic serial holdings to patrons. In order to assist with the decision whether to change current practice and, if so, what changes to make, the author undertook a survey of current practice and perceptions regarding electronic serial record displays in the library catalog. This article describes current cataloging practice at Binghamton University, outlines the survey methodology, and presents and discusses the results of the survey.","PeriodicalId":432992,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Internet Cataloging","volume":"17 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129181149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seeking to incorporate this insight into our own instructional methodology, Schaffer Library at Union College has attempted to engineer a shift from Google to Google Scholar among our student users by representing Scholar as a viable adjunct to the catalog and to more traditional electronic resources. By attempting to engage student researchers on their own terms, we have discovered that most of them react enthusiastically to the revelation that the Google they think they know so well is, it turns out, a multifaceted resource that is capable of delivering the sort of scholarly information that will meet with their professors' approval. Specifically, this article focuses on the fact that many Google Scholar searches link back to our own Web catalog where they identify useful book titles that direct OPAC keyword searches have missed.","PeriodicalId":432992,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Internet Cataloging","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133974133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Areas addressed include whether the projects used a simple metadata schema, whether they were interdisciplinary, whether they were international in scope, and whether they utilized additional metadata schemas. The article addresses the question of whether catalogers of Internet resources are utilizing the Dublin Core as the creators expect. Included is an annotated bibliography detailing some projects using the Dublin Core, with descriptor terms assigned at the end of each annotation.","PeriodicalId":432992,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Internet Cataloging","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126156403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in case of the Arabian Gulf university libraries, all the library Websites focus on general collections and services available to their patrons and there is a lack of information on various departments within the library. Very few library Websites have information about the cataloging departments. Only the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) library Website provides a separate Website for its Cataloging Operations Division. The study also found that the exploitation of Web-based cataloging resources by catalogers of the KFUPM library has resulted in enhancing the quality and efficiency of cataloging work.","PeriodicalId":432992,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Internet Cataloging","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129595704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are several ways a library can capture (i.e., obtain and hold) and organize Websites: cataloging is, of course, a traditional way of organizing information in a library, but cataloging Websites poses a dilemma for many libraries, as Websites are essentially different from traditional information resources. Making relevant Website lists and subject gateway links is usually a more popular choice, or just leaving the job to search engines like Google. This article looks at these means of organizing and capturing Websites, as well as their advantages and issues for the library and users, and determines which is the most efficient and cost-effective method.","PeriodicalId":432992,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Internet Cataloging","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129887631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Criteria for selection, harvesting techniques, the static or dynamic nature of the material, and the technical aspects of archiving are discussed. Policy matters include copyright, permission to archive, legal deposit arrangements, requests to remove harvested material. Practices for administrative, preservation, descriptive, and rights metadata are reviewed. Observations are made on the various functions served by the metadata. The dataflow and the distribution of the cataloguing data are cited. Resources that need periodic re-harvesting due to their dynamic nature and resources that involve parent-child relationships have implications for cataloguing workload. Staffing resources and costs are assessed.","PeriodicalId":432992,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Internet Cataloging","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114479240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
