Its finding, reported for the first time in the state of Rio de Janeiro, implies a hydrothermal system of high salinity at relatively low temperatures, in which metal transport is facilitated by hematite-rich rocks and generally precipitated at redox fronts. Such a hydrothermal system is not geologically manifested in the currently exposed high-grade shear zone. The finding of palladiferous gold suggests that its source was eroded during periods of increased denudation rates since the Lower Cretaceous, as indicated by apatite fission-track (AFT) data that have been reported for the region.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43718551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vanadium mine production for 2021 is estimated at more than 120 000 tonnes; however, the market base is expected to grow rapidly due to the increase in the use of vanadium for redox flow batteries. Currently, world-wide, many projects are in the advanced stages of exploration and development. In the longer term, should vanadium cease to be a critical material and the law of supply and demand applies, the marginal mines will be decommissioned, and the best deposits will remain economic. Depending on the prevailing regulations in specific jurisdictions, geological settings, and the most up-to-date metallurgical research results, the main vanadium deposit types that could be considered as potential exploration and development targets are the vanadiferous titanomagnetite deposits, sandstone-hosted uranium-vanadium deposits (Salt Wash category), shale-hosted vanadium deposits, and base metal-related vanadate deposits. However, placer deposits, surficial uranium-vanadium type mineralisation, and the Minas Ragra type patrónite deposits should also be considered.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45616981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To optimize the energy consumption in the milling unit of the mine, the data have been collected from 36 blast blocks. These blocks are selected in the main ore body area to monitor their effects on energy consumption in the milling unit. Owing to the dependence of mill energy consumption on the feed strength properties, a criterion for mill performance (MPC) has been defined and compared with the obtained dynamic hardness of seven specific blasting blocks. The results show a linear relationship with the accuracy of R 2 = 0.91 between the dynamic hardness and the MPC. For mines that use SAG or AG mills, the energy consumption for crushing the unit weight of feed depends on their dynamic stiffness.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47874326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This symposium di ff ered from previous events in that the organising committee, keynote speakers, and symposium presenters were made up entirely of students and early-career researchers. The event was organised to facilitate dis-cussions, networking, and collaboration amongst bud-ding researchers, something that has been hampered throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The organising committee and reviewers are thanked for their contributions to this abstract volume, and hopefully these studies become full journal articles in the future. The presented research encompassed traditional meet-ing themes of igneous petrology and economic geology pertaining to ma fi c-ultrama fi c rocks, as well as novel themes of non-conventional platinum-group element repositories and the applications of machine learning in mineral exploration. Several studies focussed on the world-class Bushveld Complex of South Africa, particularly the complex ’ s northern limb which has become one of the world ’ s most exciting exploration frontiers for platinum-group elements, nickel, copper, chromium, and vanadium. The mobility of magmatic sulphide liquids intrans-crustalsystemsalsofeaturesinseveralstudies,and more speci fi cally, the roles in which volatile phases may play to facilitate the migration of immiscible sulphide liquid. Lastly, someabstracts focus on petrogenetic aspects of established ma fi c-ultrama fi c complexes, such as the Noril ’ sk-Talnakh, Coldwell, and Stillwater complexes. Not only did our symposium celebrate the academic achievements of early-career researchers in our fi eld, but it also celebrated diversity and inclusivity. Amongst the presenters, six continents and thirty countries were represented. Approximately 73% of participants were early-career researchers, ranging from those currently studying for bachelors ’ degrees to those completing post-doctoral studies. One third of participants were female, a statistic that extends to the keynote speakers and organising committee. I am very pleased to be part of a The northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, South Africa, is globally recognised as one of the world ’ s largest resources of platinum-group elements (PGEs). These metals are essential to the growth of sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies, particularly within the electric vehicle industry; a market which is expected to grow exponentially in the coming decades. The PGE-Ni – Cu – Co mineralisation is hosted within the Platreef, a magmatic package thought to be analo-gous to the Critical Zone of the western and eastern limbs. It has PGE grades comparable with the Merensky Reef, commonly 3 – 4 g/t (Pt + Pd + Rh + Au), but up to 15 g/t, over a much greater thickness, along with sub-stantially more associated Ni – Cu – Co in the form of magmatic sulphides. The mineralogical and chemical properties of the metacarbonate rocks from Enwan, Bekuma, and Ekpedo metacarbonate deposits in Akoko Edo, Nigeria were determined using combined modal petrographic analysis and XRS-FP quantitative analysis. The modal analyses show that the metacarbonate rocks from Enwan, Ekpedo and Bekuma contain averages of 96.4%, 58.5%, and 77.35% CaCO3 respectively and 3.6%, 41.5% and 13.1% MgO respectively. The mineralogical constituent include calcite, dolomite, quartz, plagioclase and muscovite. The principal constituents of the carbonate rocks are calcite and dolomite with calcite being the dominant mineral. The marbles can be used in a variety of calcium carbonate industries due to the low quartz content and the mineralogical composition. These characteristics make the metacarbonate rocks suitable for the production of paint, factory lime, pesticide and animal feed, as construction material and for use in the chemical industry.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45101237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the European part of Russia, lithium-bearing pegmatites are present in Karelia and the Kola Peninsula, however, none of these prospects have been found economically viable for mining. The largest of them, the Kolmozero spodumene-bearing pegmatite deposit, is located in the northeast part of the Kola Peninsula. The Li2O content in spodumene is 7.1–8.1 wt.-%. A comparison of the Kolmozero deposit with the Greenbushes deposit in Australia indicates that these deposits have several similar characteristics, including the , geometry and composition of the pegmatite veins. In general, geological characteristics of the Kolmozero deposit, significant size of the pegmatite veins and presence of the high-Li2O grade spodumenes indicate that Kolmozero deposit can potentially contain economically viable lithium resources.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42355313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Selected physico-chemical characteristics were determined. Mineralogical characteristics were determined using XRD and SEM; and geochemical characteristics were determined using XRF and LA-ICP-MS. Kaolin colours were generally light (Lwamondo) and brown (Zebediela). Both kaolins had low pH (<6.5) and EC (<50 µS/cm). The texture of Lwamondo Kaolin was generally loam and clay loam, whereas that of Zebediela was clayey, silty and loamy. Major mineral phases were kaolinite, smectite and plagioclase in Lwamondo Kaolin, and kaolinite in Zebediela Kaolin. The morphology of the kaolins consisted mainly of stacks of kaolinite flakes. The most dominant major oxides were SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3, and the kaolins were slightly depleted in light rare earth elements. The studied characteristics indicated that the kaolins (i) formed in a supergene environment and (ii) are suitable for hollow bricks.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47614824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, several new spodumene discoveries have been delineated in the Yilgarn and Pilbara Cratons. Contrary to exploration narratives that new economic mineral discoveries will generally be made at increasingly greater depths, beneath barren cover rocks, or in remote geological environments, all new lithium discoveries have clear surface expressions in relatively ‘mature’ greenstone belts. The exploration implication is that the search space for pegmatite-hosted spodumene deposits in Western Australia remains immature. These recently discovered LCT pegmatites have geological features relevant to exploration including their age, amphibolite-facies metamorphic setting and syn-metamorphic timing, and 3D geometry, particularly their typically gentle dips, that match other such world-class pegmatites globally. Further spodumene discoveries within pegmatites at or near surface are likely in the Archean terranes of Western Australia based on these consistent exploration criteria and supportive capital market conditions.","PeriodicalId":43298,"journal":{"name":"Applied Earth Science-Transactions of the Institutions of Mining and Metallurgy","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44880319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
