It was observed that customers’ reactions bordered on issues ranging from unsolicited calls and short message services (SMS), unsubstantiated deductions of call credit units, poor service connection, network failure, cumbersome SIM swap process among others. This paper, thus, examines two Nigerian national dailies-The Punch and The Nation newspapers coverage of customers’ reaction to mobile telecommunication network services from 2015 to 2017. Using the content analysis research method, the study is anchored on the Social Exchange theory. The findings revealed a significant pattern of more negative than positive reactions by subscribers within the years under study. The negative complaints were high in 2015, dropped significantly in 2016, and rose again in 2017. On this, MTN recorded 15 (or 32%); Airtel 13 (or 28%), Glo10 (or 21%), while Etisalat (now 9Mobile) was 9 (or 19%), as against Etisalat (9 Mobile), 9 (or 19%), Glo 4 (or 8%) and Airtel 3 (or 6%) positive reactions by the customers during the period. Study thus recommends that Nigerian newspapers should once in a while carryout a survey on quality of service delivery by GSM operators and use such stories on the front page of their respective newspapers.","PeriodicalId":432771,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Mass Communication","volume":"21 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135430598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Excessive or uncontrolled use of these technological spaces brings with it a series of effects on a psychological level, since by spending a lot of time on social networks, the user begins to think that other people have the life they want and feel insufficient with themselves, being affected their self-esteem. The objective of this study is to establish the relationship between addiction to social networks and self-esteem in university students, for which a sample of 280 participants was used, 218 men and 74 women between the ages of 17 and 25 from a public university, to whom the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Social Media Addiction Scale were applied. The results show a negative relationship between the levels of addiction to social networks and its dimensions: occupation (p= -0.281), mood change (p= -0.402), relapse (p= -0.310) and conflict (p= -0.386) with the levels of self-esteem, in addition there is no significant difference in terms of the comparison of the sex in a higher or lower level of addiction (p= 0.218), which makes it clear that the sex to which they belong does not represent a determining factor in addiction.","PeriodicalId":432771,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Mass Communication","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135917648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study focuses on the media framing of the Russia-Ukraine war by the TASS and Ukrinform during the first month of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A descriptive content analysis guided by framing and political economy theories was used. A coding sheet was used as the instrument of data. A total of 1929 reports were identified during the first month of the invasion. Findings revealed that the Russian News Agency framed the conflict in Ukraine as a ‘special military operation,’ but did not make the ‘operation’ a media agenda. This was reflected in the low Average Daily Frequency (ADF) of 9 reports. On the other hand, the Ukrainian News Agency, Ukrinform framed the operation as a ‘war’ or ‘invasion’ of Ukraine. The Ukrainian News Agency made the operation a media agenda, this was reflected in the high Average Daily Frequency (ADF) of 53 reports. Further findings revealed that the dominant frame employed by the TASS and Ukrinform News Agencies is the attacks on civilians, residential areas and causalities. This was to expose the atrocities committed by the enemy (Russian or Ukrainian government) to either win sympathy or condemnation among supporters. Based on these findings, this study recommends media independence during wars. This will give even the state-owned news agencies the right to employ realist frames which could help save lives during wars and not political economy frames.","PeriodicalId":432771,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Mass Communication","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135917645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Pictorial Framing of Farmer-Herder Conflict in Nigeria by Daily Trust, Nigerian Tribune and the Sun Newspapers","authors":"","doi":"10.33140/ctmc.02.01.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33140/ctmc.02.01.01","url":null,"abstract":"This study examined pictorial framing of farmer-herder conflict in Nigeria by Daily Trust, Tribune and the Sun newspapers for the period of six months June 2018 to December 2018. The objectives of the study are to identify issues of farmers-herders conflict portrayed in Daily Trust, the Sun and Tribune newspapers. Identify types of pictures the newspapers used in framing farmers-herders conflict in Nigeria. Examine tone of the pictures used by Daily Trust, the Sun and Tribune in framing the farmers- herders’ conflict in Nigeria. The study is situated within the arguments of framing and conflict theories which served as theoretical framework. The study adopted content analysis research design to fill the knowledge gap on how newspapers use pictures in framing the farmers-herders conflict in Nigeria during the period of study. Findings from the study indicated that Daily Trust, Tribune and the Sun used accompanied pictures with positive tone in the coverage of the farmers- herders’ conflict pictorially throughout the period selected for the research. The study concluded that, even though diverse media organizations paid attention to the coverage of the conflict pictorially, Daily Trust, Tribune and The Sun were able to show the different sides to the conflict (Resolved/ Rescued efforts, Mild, Grievous and Farmers Attack) but predominantly focused on village attack, herders with weapons and the physically traumatised angle to the story thereby showcasing more of a situation with devastating impact that is yet to be resolved. The study concluded that, in spite of the mild reports and footages about the issue, Daily Trust, Tribune and The Sun newspapers pictorially framed the conflict as and physically traumatizing, impacts community negatively thus downplaying the mild or commodification perspective of the situation in pictures. The study recommends that similar study should be conducted using the same newspapers but different period of study in order to ascertain if there is a paradigmatic shift in relation to issues of farmers and herders’ conflict pictorially framed by Daily Trust, Tribune and The Sun newspapers. There is need for Daily Trust, Tribune and the Sun to adopt the use of both accompanied and unaccompanied pictures in their pictorial reportage of the farmers and herders’ conflict. Further research should be conducted on the tone of pictures used by Daily Trust, Tribune and the Sun newspapers. This largely because, it is extremely unusual to see all the pictures have positive tone.","PeriodicalId":432771,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Mass Communication","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135917649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Are people offended in particular, predictable ways? This online survey (N=1,178) that gathers demographic, biographic, and psychological data in combination with responses to 22 wordless cartoons, reveals distinct social patterns in offend ability. With reference to anthropological, psychological, philosophical and neuroscientific traditions, “offend ability” is conceptualized in cultural sociological terms, by which “offense” is read as the “striking against” of a symbolic boundary (separating profane from the too-sacred-to-play-with). As such, offense is proposed as a supremely meaningful metric in defining groups in terms of what they believe most deeply. With attention both to marginal groups and to liminal identities, analysis crystalizes an intriguing trend, namely: the significance of micro (individual) level factors (e.g. age, gender, psychological characteristics) and macro (social) factors (e.g. ethnicity, nationality) in predicting sensitivity to offense, in comparison to the seeming irrelevance of the mesa (interactional). This builds on major sociological work that cites the increasing solitariness of modern life; here, “sacred” boundaries are seen to be individually determined, in combination less with lived experience than with membership in abstract, often innate groups. Regression models explore meaningful variables in greater detail [1, 2]. Of particular note: sexual preferences were the greatest predictor of sensitivity to offense, with women attracted to women reporting the highest sensitivity. Across the board, those who were uncomfortable before disclosing particular information (e.g. sexual, political preferences) were disproportionately members of groups who were more sensitive to offense (e.g. “queer”, right-leaning): identity discomfort manifests as symbolic discomfort.","PeriodicalId":432771,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Mass Communication","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135917646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A quantitative research design was used, with survey as specific method. Some 326 respondents were surveyed in ten (10) core neighbourhoods in Buea Municipality where cable television consumption is widespread. According to the findings, 24.5% (80) of the respondents indicated that they view foreign television always, as opposed to 11% (36) who indicated that they view local television channels always. In this value (always) category therefore, there is a 13.5% gap (in favour of foreign television) in viewership preference between foreign television and local television on a weekly basis. An ANOVA test produced a statistically significant difference at the p < .000 level in audience weekly foreign TV exposure and high-quality content as a determinant of international over local TV viewership with F (4, 321) = 8.457, p < .000. The significance level of 0.000 is less than the threshold value of 0.05, confirming the hypothesis that high-quality content is determinant of audience weekly foreign TV viewership over local channels. Similar statistically significant differences were established for exciting/entertaining programmes and provision of 24 hours TV programmes as a determinant of audience choice for foreign TV over local TV channels. These findings suggest that high quality production content, exciting/entertaining programmes and provision of 24 hours TV programmes were factors that determined high dependence on foreign over local television channels. By implication, local content producers need to focus on these concerns and strive to meet up such audience needs to be able to stand this rife competition from foreign television.","PeriodicalId":432771,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Mass Communication","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127850381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
