Over 600 mission agencies listed in the North American Mission Handbook were canvassed for US-born Black missionaries, and comparisons made between data from the 21st and 22nd editions. A slight majority of the 179 African American foreign missionaries located were single, and 57% of marrieds were in inter-ethnic marriages. Almost half of these cross-cultural workers served in Africa. Not more than 10% were found in any one mission agency, and 21% of missionaries were salaried.","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"29 1","pages":"139 - 155"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78365678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its popularity, the goals and expectations associated with short-term mission are often in conflict with the lived experiences of participants who both go on, and receive those doing short-term mission. The liminality and communitas described by participants in short-term mission reflect similar processes found in the practice of pilgrimage. In this article we show the multiple similarities between pilgrimage and short-term mission and suggest a new framework of “missional pilgrimage” as a way of bringing together these lived experiences with the aims of short-term mission. In doing this we do not reduce those who receive short-term mission participants to the “holy center” but rather consider them as fellow pilgrims who journey alongside those being sent in participating in the missio Dei, the mission of God in a wider sense.","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"12 1","pages":"170 - 182"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-02-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90874549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their remoteness and marginalization make it challenging for missionaries to live with them. Their different mindsets and values require different approaches than those used to reach sedentary peoples. Major advocates for mission to nomads, David Phillips and Malcolm Hunter, have advocated for a different paradigm of mission and church that reflects nomads’ way of life. Relatively little has been written about missionary work among nomads in recent decades. In 2018, 37 national and expatriate missionaries to nomads were interviewed. The interview data were compared with the experience of missionaries recorded in the literature. Alongside making disciples, missionaries to nomads are involved in a wide range of activities, including caring for nomads’ animals. In this article we outline what missionaries to nomads today are doing and the major challenges they face. We affirm the need for a specific missiological focus on ministry to nomadic peoples and suggest some essential areas for its development.","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"123 - 138"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91175765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hayes, How We Read the Bible: A Guide to Scripture’s Style and Meaning","authors":"Joseph Sturgeon","doi":"10.1177/00918296221132772","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/00918296221132772","url":null,"abstract":"While there is a plethora of volumes on how to read the Bible, Vermeulen and Hayes manage to contribute a unique perspective on the subject by utilizing the field of cognitive stylistics, a multifaceted field that has been developing since the mid-twentieth century. The authors utilize a literary approach that analyzes the style of a text with equal attention paid to what is happening in the mind of the reader. Readers employing this method simultaneously consider textual cues as well as their own context through which they read the text, recognizing the presuppositions, linguistic abilities, and emotions they bring to the text. There are 12 chapters in the book, with each chapter examining one literary stylistic element. The meaning of words, narrator focus, metaphors and prototypes, and schema and script are some of the literary features examined, with the goal of demonstrating what the reader should be cognizant of as they pick up on literary cues. Every chapter follows the same formula: an introduction to the stylistic element, a short history about the study of the concept, how the concept relates to biblical studies, a case study from Scripture, ideas for discussion, and suggested works for further reading on the stylistic element. Some of the stylistic elements include understanding semantic domains of words, identifying the focus of the narrator, and classifying the text world—the mental envisioning of the time and place of the text. This book is timely in the ongoing exploration of biblical studies. While much attention is given to understanding and interpreting the intent of Scripture’s original authors, this volume reminds readers they have an important role in the act of reading. While the concepts presented are fairly intuitive, readers might have a difficult time understanding and applying the concepts to the biblical text. For this reason, the authors provide additional biblical texts for case-study exercises as well as discussion questions at the end of each chapter. This is helpful for readers to further understand and internalize the stylistic element being presented, especially if practiced in a group 1132772 MIS0010.1177/00918296221132772Missiology: An International ReviewBook Reviews book-review2022","PeriodicalId":43205,"journal":{"name":"Missiology-An International Review","volume":"83 4","pages":"85 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72430310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
