The author examines the theology of evil in the Old Testament and New Testament t raditions, as well as the solution to this problem in Greek patristics, which formed the basis of the ponerology of the Orthodox Church. The author also pays atten-tion to the study of the development of the doctrine of evil in early Buddhism, using the exa m-ple of the Dhammapada, and the philosophical schools of Mahayana Buddhism – Madhyamaka and Yogachara. It turns out that in both religious traditions evil is considered as an ontological and moral category, the opposite of good.","PeriodicalId":431828,"journal":{"name":"BUDDHIST STUDIES: ALMANAC","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114252498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The thesis is put forward that both monuments share a common theme, the theme of suffering and the vanity of human life. The authorship and main ideas of these books are considered. Common points in the au-thors ' arguments about evil, ignorance and suffering are clarified. The understanding of what happiness is in both religious traditions is given. The author argues that both books raise eternal questions that concern every generation of mankind and often give similar answers, in the ab-sence of genetic connection, mutual influence and borrowing, since these monuments were cre-ated in two completely different civilizational centers of the Mediterranean and Indochina.","PeriodicalId":431828,"journal":{"name":"BUDDHIST STUDIES: ALMANAC","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131891106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
