However, with increasing population and industrialactivity, the volume and composition of the wastewater needed some mechanical, biological,or chemical treatment before discharge. In this chapter, wastewater treatment is placed intothe context of sustainable development, with its main aspects of environmental, economic,and social concerns, both for future and current generations. The wide spectra of indicatorsand assessment methods that are used to assess the sustainability of the wastewater treatmentmethods are presented. Whilst hydraulic modelling approaches for stormwater flows and sewered conveyance are now well developed and tested, the modeling basis for non-point urban water quality is still somewhat rudimentary. This chapter focuses on statistical and numerical approaches that have been developed to quantify pollutant concentrations and loadings associated with stormwater runoff and to evaluate the performance effectiveness of BMP controls for sustainable water management in highly urbanised areas. \u0000There has been a widespread application of simple, first-order screening techniques primarily based on regression and probabilistic analysis. These are now being supplemented by generic GIS and process-based modeling techniques frequently employing coupled 1D-2D dual-drainage methodologies. In general it is alleged that the simpler meta-modeling approaches if appropriately calibrated and verified, can match the predictive outcomes from the more deterministic process-based methods. In contrast with many conventional data normally represented by point measurements, remote sensing based measurements are spatially averages over the pixels can appropriate for distributed hydrological model. Furthermore, remote sensing enables data access from remote areas, where data are typically sparse. Remote sensing technology used electromagnetic spectrum in the range of wavelengths of different radiations reflected or emitted by objects.
