However, the oral histories of a group of workers employed in the building industry in Stevenage during the post-war decades suggest a very different reality. For these workers, collectivism, solidarity, sacrifice, and struggle were the key themes of their experience on construction sites during the 1950s–1970s period. A strong commitment to trade unionism was central to this, and was also a key resource through which they constructed their self-identities.","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"81 1","pages":"211-236"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.11","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70531259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It uses these moments to examine the British labour movement in the 1970s and argues that national politics was central to this contested internationalist activity. The article draws out the identification with Chilean workers felt by a certain layer of the British labour movement in this period, expressed through the ‘blackings’ in East Kilbride. In contrast, the limitations of this identification are illuminated through the ITT occupation where instead by happenstance the workers stumbled across the history of the Chilean coup.","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"81 1","pages":"237-257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-12-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.12","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70531298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the hitherto unexplored parallel study of these highly important socialist intellectuals and activists, this article aims to shed light on the significance of a particular form of nationalism as an ideological and political resource for socialists in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and to highlight the importance of national history writing as a paradigm for historical understanding in this period.","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"65 1","pages":"97-122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.6","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70532061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Far less, however, is known about their personal motivations. This article explores the narratives that have framed our understanding of the British Battalion, and asks how these narratives match up to the complexity of individual volunteers’ lives, before, during, and after the Spanish Civil War. The article focuses on a number of particular volunteers such as Ralph Fox, George Nathan, and Wilfred Macartney, and shows how the study of their supposedly well-known lives can still yield surprising new insights. Above all, these stories warn against any temptation to romanticize the war in Spain and the role of the volunteers: a temptation that has often proved all too irresistible.","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"81 1","pages":"123-140"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70531699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It begins by reflecting on how the strike has been framed as either an addendum to the more celebrated Grunwick dispute or ignored altogether in existing historiography. Thereafter, it situates the strike in the context of women’s changing employment patterns and increased trade unionism in post-war Britain and discusses why the strike has received less academic coverage than similar disputes from the period, such as the Ford sewing-machinists’ strike and the Grunwick dispute. Using a range of media coverage and oral histories, it contrasts this with the importance of the strike to participants and the feminist, socialist, and national media. It outlines the distinction between feminist and labour interpretations of its meaning and purpose before finally analysing these interpretations against the persp...","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"82 1","pages":"141-168"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.8","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70531838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although considerable academic research has been undertaken into Registered Dock Worker (RDW) trade unionism in the British dock industry, little emphasis has been placed on the dynamics of clerical staff organization despite these workers constituting a significant proportion of the dock labour force. What follows explores the growth of the Association of Clerical, Technical and Supervisory Staffs (ACTSS) 6/567 Branch in its developmental stage between 1964 and 1972 and the organizational difficulties it was initially faced with. The confrontational stance gradually adopted by the Branch and its stewards is placed in the context of the threat of redundancy and erosion of manning levels arising from the extensive rationalization and modernization of the British and local dock industry more broadly. Furthermore, their relationship with management and RDW colleagues is central to a proper analysis of the complexities of labour relations at the Port of Liverpool during this period. The attitudes and activism of clerical workers at the port is compared and contrasted with established theories of white-collar unionism throughout the article.","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"81 1","pages":"49-75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.3","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70531823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is about how shared identities were created from overlapping and conflicting shop-floor interests and the political ambiguities generated by this experience. There is still much to be said for Hobsbawm’s account of how the workplace experience of the engineering craftsmen drew many to revolutionary politics but it captures only part of the story. The experience that led some craftsmen to the Communist Party persuaded others to disengage from politics and some to cut their links with craft altogether, joining the sections set up for the union’s industrial membership. Semi-skilled and unskilled workers were integrated in shop-floor trade unionism but, like the skilled men who opted for industrial membership, left the business of the ‘The Union’ to others. Militant trade unionism and the intensely political internal life of the union masked a deeper political alienation.","PeriodicalId":43028,"journal":{"name":"Labour History Review","volume":"81 1","pages":"1-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2016-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3828/LHR.2016.1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70531510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
