The spectrum broadens the SAR applications to sub-mm resolution imaging and localization, non-destructive testing, and material characterization. Although the spectrum suffers from high atmospheric attenuation and free space path loss limiting the sensing range, it has emerging short-range applications. State-of-the-art THz SAR imaging is demonstrated primarily up to 1.1 THz with electronic transceiver modules. This paper presents one of the first demonstrations of 3D SAR imaging at 1.5 THz. The frequency band of 1.1-1.5 THz is considered for imaging a metallic target at a reference range of approx. 40 cm. Still, the severe path loss imposed at THz frequencies makes the adoption of beamforming techniques imperative for optimal exploitation of this frequency range. In this paper, aiming at taking full advantage of the available bandwidths in this frequency range, we propose a hybrid beamforming algorithm adopting dynamic array of subarrays architecture in a point-to-point Ultra Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (UM-MIMO) system. Firstly, we evaluate the unique trade-off between the spectral efficiency and the hardware complexity of the system, that the proposed algorithm enjoys. In such high frequency bands, the signal is expected to be impaired by phase noise, I/Q mismatch, power amplifier non linearities, etc. It has been shown that at such frequencies, with possibly large bandwidth (∼ 50 GHz), Gaussian phase noise models accurately the phase noise. This paper studies the effect of Gaussian phase noise on several waveforms. Here, five performance metrics are used to compare them: Bit Error Rate (BER), Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR), Adjacent Channel Power Ratio (ACPR), spectral efficiency (SE) and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM). Due to the fact that the phase of complex SAR data is very sensitive to the shift in time, the proposed interpolations include the phase control of the interpolated complex values. The proposed methods are examined with the global backprojection algorithm that is used to process SAR data at THz frequencies. Each reflector is shifted by a bidirectional stepwise electrostatic actuator system. The design and functionality of actuator system and reflect-array limit and determine the reflector design. In this paper, we adapt a dicing-free Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) fabrication process to the requirements of a THz MEMS reflector. We present the partial release of the handle layer from the SOI substrate on wafer level, leaving the remaining connected part as a functional system component. For a use of such tags as landmarks in mm-wave indoor self-localization systems, an augmentation of their RCS is required to improve the reading range. As a solution, we propose the integration of a 1D PhC resonator with a dielectric lens (i.e. frequency coded lenses). This concept is demonstrated by locating a 1D PhC resonator in the focal area of a spherical dielectric lens made of PolyPropylene (PP) material with a relative permittivity of 2.0. On the other hand, the PhC resonator is designed by introducing a defect layer between two quarter-wave Bragg mirrors in order to produce a notch signature in the backscattering. Two frequency coded lenses of 24 mm and 40 mm diameter are simulated, fabricated, and experimentally examined. For 3D THz SAR imaging, the image formation algorithms play an important role. Two 3D SAR image formation algorithms, Range Migration (RM) operating in frequency domain and Backprojection (BP) operating in time domain are considered in this comparative study. The algorithms are first used to form 3D images from simulated THz SAR data.
