In the beginning, carpet drilling and hydraulic fracturing to shale reservoirs made a great benefit without detailed geological understanding. However, the sudden increase of gas supply and international economic crisis resulted in lower gas price relative to oil price, which requires more detailed development optimization and geological characterization on shale reservoirs to reduce operation cost. In order to evaluate the productivity of shale and tight reservoirs, it is necessary to accurately predict the amount of gas stored in the reservoir. To calculate exact volume of gas in reservoirs, we must reliably measure petrophysical parameters such as permeability, porosity, and water saturation to estimate free gas volume, and geochemical parameters such as total organic carbon (TOC) and adsorption capacity to estimate desorbed gas volume. Several measurement techniques have been proposed to overcome the difficulty in very low porosity and permeability of shale and tight reservoirs. Recently, the crushed rock technique have been used for porosity and permeability of shale and tight reservoir are measured, but the standard procedures have not yet been established. Water saturation is another hurdle since actual measurements are extremely difficult and time-consuming. Modified conventional equations have been tried, but there are still various limitations. We also cover currently available techniques and their limitations on TOC, a measure for gas generation potential, and adsorption capacity. Currently, measurement techniqies for petrophysical and geochemical properties of shale and tight reservoirs are not fully established. There should be detailed studies for the accurate estimation of these properties, which can lead successful reservoir characterization.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116775375","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The customized development method based on geomechanical properties and brittleness index for each shale play is necessary for successful implementation of drilling and reservoir stimulation. In this study two prospective shale plays, the Montney and Liard basins in Western Canada, has selected for geomechanical properties and brittleness index from available wellbore data. As the result of this study, these two basins has high TOC, optimal geomechanical property and shows great development potential. Montney Formation in the Montney Basin and Besa River Formation in the Liard Basin show high Young’s modulus and low Poisson’s ratio, which is over 40 GPa, Young’s modulus and below 0.15, Poisson’s ratio. These rock properties of shale gas reservoirs play an important role in reservoir stimulation, especially in hydraulic fracturing.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124343840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Geochemistry analysis and high pressure methane adsorption test are carried out to analyze the adsorption characteristics of total organic carbon (TOC) and major element and mineral composition of the shales. The results show that total organic carbon of the samples is in the range of 3.18-9.86%, and the major elements are dominated by SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , and CaO. The mineral composition of the samples are composed of quartz, muscovite/illite, calcite, and pyrite. Adsorption tests are performed from 0 psig to 4,500 psig considering the known characteristics of the shale. Langmuir volume is in the range of 101.8-167.0 scf/ton, and Langmuir pressure is in the range of 97.5-881.3 psia, respectively. In addition, the correlation between TOC, major elements, mineral contents, and the Langmuir volume are analyzed. Langmuir volume is not related with TOC but inversely proportional to the SiO 2 and quartz contents, and proportional to the clay content. Therefore, it is expected that the correlation between the adsorption capacity and the geochemical properties of shale samples in the Liard Basin is to be used as a major factor for reservoir characterization.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125618352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there exists no standard stratigraphic classification system that can be applied for the basin-wide underground reservoirs and petroleum systems, mainly due to the limitations that most stratigraphic nomenclatures were defined by information obtained from underground boreholes. In this review, after extensive literature survey we reinterpret the spatio-temporal relationships of the Mannville Group and its correlative strata on the basis of the depositional history and stratigraphic context in the Alberta Plain region. It seems appropriate to distinguish the Deville Formation lying immediately above the sub-Mannville unconformity as a stratigraphic unit separated from the overlying Mannville Group and the underlying Jurassic strata based on its unconformable relationship both above and below and its depositional origin. The Basal Quartz, commonly used unofficially, is a stratigraphic unit referring to the lower Mannville strata beneath the Ostracod Beds. The Bluesky and the Wabiskaw sandstones in the Mannville Group are very similar to the Glauconitic Sandstone in terms of lithology, but their depositional histories are different from the latter. The former sandstones had been deposited during the overall transgressive stages, whereas the latter is a deposit that was formed during the following regressive stage after the deposition of the former sandstones. The main reservoirs in the southern Alberta region are the Basal Quartz sandstones, which represent fluvial channel sandstones that filled the main channels having a N-S orientation and dendritic tributary channels connected to the main channels. The main source rocks are interpreted to be organic matter-rich marine shales of the Jurassic Fernie Group. The Ostracod Beds are very poor in permeability and thus form a regional seal, forming stratigraphic traps in numerous areas.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114590168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, more fracture networks are developed in more brittle rocks. For this reason, brittleness has been used as a guide to decide the target formation of hydraulic fracturing stimulation for shale and tight gas productions. Previous studies have been conducted to find out which factors have influences on the estimations of various brittleness indices to represent rock brittleness quantitatively. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of rock fabric on the estimation of the mineralogy-based brittleness index. Both elastic moduliand mineralogy-based brittleness indices, which are the most commonly used indices, are obtained using available data from the Montney Formation, Canada. The former index is evaluated using the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio that are calculated from the sonic and density logs. The latter index is estimated based on the mineral composition from X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis. Comparison between the results from two different methods indicates that quartz might be the controlling mineral on the brittleness index of the lower Montney Formation. Thin section observations, however, show that the strength of the lower Montney Formation might be determined by dolomite and clay considering matrix-supported textures. This means that rock strength and brittleness may not be governed by same controlling factors. This suggests that rock fabrics, such as anisotropy due to the lamination or quantitative analysis of minerals which constitute grain, cement, and matrix through thin section observation, should be considered in addition to the mineral composition in order to evaluate mineralogy-based brittleness index more accurately.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129705489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gray scale digital image analysis results revealed environmental cyclic patterns that could be related to orbital and suborbital changes during the latest Cenomanian (94 Ma). High-resolution nannofossil biostratigraphy provided the detailed chronological information needed to constrain the time intervals of each cyclic event. A study of thin sections showed that the basic pattern of the millimeter-scale laminae was couplets of alternating dark organic-rich layers and white biogenic test layers. The composition of the dark organic-rich layer appeared to include the remains from microbial organisms with a chain-like structure. From the combination of the gray scale and thin section analyses, three well-expressed cyclic patterns could be recognized in the black shale interval, namely (1) meter-scale cyclic events (average interval of approximately 413 mm), (2) centimeter-scale cyclic events (approximately 10 – 30 mm intervals), and (3) millimeter-scale cycles (average interval of approximately 5 mm). These cyclic events could imply approximately 40 ky, 1 – 3 ky, and 300 – 700 yr time spans, respectively, on the basis of biostratigraphy. In addition, two other cyclic patterns indicating approximately 20 ky and 60 – 150 yr time intervals were weakly expressed.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125395216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both basins have experienced similar structural evolution and depositional history. Despite the similarity between two basins, large oil and gas fields were found in the Kutai Basin, whereas not common in the Barito Basin and localized in its northeastern part. Depositional history of both basins evolved from lacustrine syn-rift to marine post-rift stages through fluvio-deltaic transitional environment. However, different type of petroleum system has been identified in the Barito and Kutai basins. Syn-rift lacustrine to fluvio-deltaic sequence (Tanjung Formation) is an essential element of petroleum system in the Barito Basin and post-rift deltaic sequence (Balikpapan and Kampung Baru formations) is a key element in the Kutai Basin. Such difference in the petroleum system type is associated with difference in burial history, affected by spatio-temporal variation of uplifting and basin subsidence. The differential uplifting of the Meratus Mountains allowed the syn-rift Tanjung Formation to reach thermal maturation only in the northeastern Barito Basin. The uplifting of the Central Kalimantan Mountains, however, caused erosion of the syn-rift sequence in the Kutai Basin and supplied enough sediments to form the post-rift deltaic sequence with thermal maturity. Future exploration potential of the Barito Basin still remains in the well-known, syn-rift Tanjung Formation and needs to be further evaluated from the pre-Cenozoic fractured basement, the post-rift Warukin, and the Berai limestone reservoirs particularly in the western region of the Barito Basin.","PeriodicalId":429897,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology","volume":"155 4-5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116633290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
