It shows how the clearance procedures, the imprecise regulations, and the arbitrary power of archivists at various levels can either open access to restricted documents, or prevent access to others that are supposedly ‘open to the public’. To this extent, this article shows how the fragmented and authoritarian nature of the Chinese bureaucracy shapes the relationship between administrators and the people.","PeriodicalId":42972,"journal":{"name":"Archives and Records-The Journal of the Archives and Records Association","volume":"43 1","pages":"75 - 94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23257962.2021.1894107","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48880319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The National Archives (UK) has been working in collaboration with statisticians from the University of Warwick and partners from across the UK archives sector to develop a decision-support system which quantifies the risks involved in digital preservation. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, this partnership has developed an interactive tool for managing risks to digital material, based on a Bayesian statistical network. The tool provides archivists with a different way of thinking about digital preservation, supported by an evidence base they can use to advocate for action. The project illustrates the potential benefit of a collaborative approach, combining insight from different disciplines.","PeriodicalId":42972,"journal":{"name":"Archives and Records-The Journal of the Archives and Records Association","volume":"42 1","pages":"58 - 78"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23257962.2021.1873121","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49322342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on insights from some classic works in the field of critical cartography, we examine five ways in which maps can help us to understand the nature of archives catalogues: (1) as tools for orientation and sense-making of interconnected archival landscapes; (2) as involving abstraction, selection and privileging, not direct reproduction, of information; (3) as making propositions or claims about records; (4) as ongoing archival labour, where metadata and description have mixed or multiple provenance and continue to evolve; and (5) as intrinsically interdisciplinary. Inverting the metaphor, we propose that the moral defence of the record as an ethical framework is also insightful for cartography. We further suggest that thinking of finding aids as metaphorical maps can help to reinvigorate archival description and inspire better catalogues.","PeriodicalId":42972,"journal":{"name":"Archives and Records-The Journal of the Archives and Records Association","volume":"42 1","pages":"95 - 118"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23257962.2021.1873118","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44372460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite its ostensibly futuristic premise, the resolution is firmly grounded in the concerns of the present: mapping the legal and ethical implications of autonomous robots for European lawmakers. Included in the EU resolution is the proposal to investigate creating a legal status for electronic persons so that autonomous robots can be responsible for damages they cause. One inconspicuous site that stands to be transformed by a legislative instrument granting electronic personhood is archival diplomatics: the prospect of electronic persons represents a peculiar challenge to some of its foundational ideas. That is, the definition of persons — the central element of any document — within diplomatics has not yet been discussed in relation to the possibility of electronic persons or personhood. Drawing from legal scholarship on robotics, I will provide an exploratory overview of what a status as persons for autonomous robots and AI systems might entail for an evolving theory of archival diplomatics.","PeriodicalId":42972,"journal":{"name":"Archives and Records-The Journal of the Archives and Records Association","volume":"42 1","pages":"25 - 39"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/23257962.2021.1873120","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49212641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
