Ada95 is now universally- accessible, so the universal accessibility of KBSE will be assured if Ada95 is seen to support it. An automatic conversion from the Refine programming language component of the Software Refinery KBSE environment exposes the strengths and weaknesses of Ada95's support for KBSE. At the very least, Ada95 enables the more widespread distribution of KBSE applications developed with Software Refinery.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128372964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Priority inversion occw-s when a high priority task is blocked by a low priority task, such as at a shared semaphore or a protected operation. PCP guarantees the absence of chained priority inversion or deadlock. The ceiling locking (CL) priority on protected objects of Ada-95 also has these properties but has some limitations. For example, tasks cannot suspend themselves inside a protected operation. PCP has no such restrictions. Thus, PCP is more appropriate for some real-time applications. PCP has not been implemented in any language, · including Ada. A guideline for emulating PCP using Ada-83 exists but it lacks generality and flexibility. This paper discusses an implementation of PCP in Ada-95, the Ada-95 features that enable the implementation, the design of the implementation and some related issues.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127484470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To aid in Wlderstanding components we built a tool that automatically embeds Hypertext Markup Language (HlML) links in Ada 95 specification files. Derived types are linked to their parent types, child packages arc linked to their parents, and all subprogram parameter and return types are linked to their declarations. We conducted a controlled experiment to determine if these links help progranuners to learn to use library components. Researchers have not formally investigated which comprehension techniques are effective and which are not. Our preliminary results indicate that our techniques are effective in aiding programmers to learn to use a reusable component.","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134356874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This API includes a complete \"thin\" binding to Tel and an experimental \"thick\" binding to Tk from Ada 95. Several features of Ada 95 such as access to subprograms, tagged types, and interface to C were used in this binding. What is a PIGUI? A Platform-Independent Graphical User Interface (PIGUI) toolkit is a software library that a programmer uses to produce GUI code for multiple computer systems. The toolkit presents functions and/or objects (along with a programming approach) which is independent of which GUI the programmer is targeting ... Native look-and-feel is a desirable feature. but is not essential for PIGUis. [4] Examples of PIGUis Some PIGUis currently available for Ada are Screen Machine from Objective Interface Systems (info@ois.com) and OpenUI from Open Software Associates (http://www.osa.com.au). Perhaps the \"hottest\" PIGUI being discussed today among Internet programmers is the Java A WT (Abstract Window Toolkit) from Sun Microsystems (http://java.sun.com). Introduction to TASH TASH [8] is a binding to Tcl!Tk [6] from Ada (requires Ada 95). This binding allows a Tcl!Tk program to use Ada in place of C to implement Tel command procedures. This may be done to increase execution speed, use complex data structures not available in Tel, and to otherwise use capabilities of Ada not found in Tel. It also makes the Tel/Tk library functions available to an Ada program. These include string and list handling. regular expression matching. hash tables, and (most important for this discussion) access to a graphical user interface toolkit. Crawford","doi":"10.1145/240678.240706","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/240678.240706","url":null,"abstract":"Objects go about their business by perceiving, classifying, and reacting to situations. We've found that making~ an object's domain of situations-and tabulating the mapping of this domain onto the object's range of reactions-significantly enhances our intuitions about objects, classes, and inheritance, and significantly increases the coherence of object-oriented development. This paper defines situations, shows that objects are mathematical functions from situations onto reactions, and then shows how to partition these functions into tables of \"use rules'', each of which describes the object's behavior for a class of situations. We illustrate this mathematical paradigm for both active and passive objects. The paper gives examples of a situation-driven approach (in Ada), and shows how such an approach helps projects validate and verify programs. (To support validation, we write specifications that are mathematically coherent but reviewable by users and their domain experts. To support verification, we develop implementations whose structure and semantics arc isomorphic to their specifications.) The paper briefly describes a case tool for a \"Situation-Driven Method\" (using AdaJava, Internet, and Web technology). Thought**Tools and Intermetrics arc developing the tool in a project funded by the US Army CECOM. 1. Situations: the facts of object life-cycles. Our objective is to introduce a mathematical structure for objects, a structure which helps engineers specify. implement, validate, and verify object-oriented programs. But first we must introduce the terms and concepts basic to our project. Consider the following request: \"Given the information that stack D has just received a pop stimulus. give an unegujvoca! description of D's reaction.\" Of course, this request isn't reasonable: it doesn't teJI us D's~~ (in particular, whether or not B is empty). In general, knowing an object's trigger stimulus (for example. knowing that a stack has a pop ca11) isn't sufficient to determine its reaction. One needs to know more: one needs to know the stimulated object's situation. Situation: the set of stimulus and state facts necessary and sufficient to detennine an object's reaction. A trigger stimulus (for example, a push or pop ca11 to a stack) !J:i.m-but does not detennine-the stimulated object's reaction. Situations (which always contain trigger stimuli) trigger .il.llil determine reactions. For example, pop ( ? x ), count> 0 is a situation. (The question mark indicates that the mode of x is out; \"count\" is the number of items stored in the stack.) \"pop ( ? x )\" is a trigger stimulus (and stimulus fact); \"count> 0\" is a state fact. This situation calls for returning the last value pushed on the stack and then reducing count by one. Now consider, pop ( ? x ), count = 0 P~nnissinn ll> mak~ digital 'hard .:npi~s <>I' all or pan c>l'this work li>r pc-rsonaJ t>r dassroom U!<ri~ i!-; granl~d withtlUl t~'-· pn)·id..:-d thai t.:opi~s arlo? ll.ll rnad~ qr distrihuk","PeriodicalId":429060,"journal":{"name":"TRI-Ada","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123149177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
